Chapter 14 - The Mother Who Wasn’t Invited

Margaret had been released under supervision pending the completion of her sentence arrangements and restitution proceedings.
She was not invited.
Vanessa froze when she saw her.
Daniel moved beside her.
Security waited for my signal.
Margaret raised both hands.
“I’m not here to cause trouble.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Why are you here?”
“To give you something.”
She held out a small envelope.
Vanessa did not take it.
Margaret placed it on a table.
“I spent your whole childhood teaching you the wrong lesson.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I told you rich meant safe. Poor meant failure. Powerful meant worthy.”
She looked at me.
“I was wrong.”
Then back to her daughter.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Good.”
Margaret flinched.
But nodded.
“I only wanted you to hear me admit it.”
She turned to leave.
Vanessa did not stop her.
That was her right.
Forgiveness cannot be demanded because someone finally apologizes.
Later, Vanessa opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of herself at eight years old.
On the back Margaret had written:
You were enough before I taught you that you weren’t.
Vanessa cried.
Daniel held her.
Then the music began.
May you like
And she walked toward the garden.
