Chapter 4 - The Lie That Reached Everyone

By evening, Cassidy’s photograph was everywhere.
A local news station showed footage of her entering the private residence. Online strangers called her Kieran’s secret employee, his girlfriend, and his accomplice. None of it was true, but truth traveled more slowly than scandal.
The hospital suspended her pending an investigation.
Her landlord asked her to leave, claiming reporters were disturbing other tenants.
Noah’s school requested that he remain home “until the situation settled.”
In less than twelve hours, Cassidy lost her job, her apartment, and the ordinary life she had spent six years building.
Kieran stood in the residence kitchen while she read the hospital email.
“I’ll fix it,” he said.
“That’s what powerful men always say after their world crushes somebody else’s.”
His face tightened.
“You’re right.”
The easy agreement made her angrier.
“I don’t want your money.”
“You won’t need it. The drive contains proof the list is fabricated.”
“Then release it.”
“If we release everything publicly, innocent people named in Elena’s files could be harmed.”
Cassidy stared at him.
“Then find another way.”
Kieran contacted federal investigators through an attorney he trusted. Cassidy surrendered the drive and provided a statement. It should have been enough.
It wasn’t.
Someone inside the investigation informed Reyes within an hour.
Kieran realized the leak when one of his legitimate warehouses was suddenly searched using a warrant based on false information. The goal was not prosecution. It was distraction.
During the search, Brendan entered the residence disguised as a maintenance worker.
Noah recognized him.
“You’re the park man.”
Brendan removed his cap.
“I’m your dad.”
Mrs. Kim immediately moved between them.
“You need to leave.”
Brendan raised both hands. “I’m not here to hurt anyone. I only want to speak with Cassidy.”
Cassidy entered the hallway and felt the world narrow.
“You approached my son again.”
“I came to warn you.”
“You came for the necklace. It’s already with investigators.”
Panic flashed in Brendan’s eyes.
“Then we’re all in danger.”
“No,” Cassidy said. “You are afraid of losing the money.”
Brendan’s shoulders dropped. For the first time, the charm disappeared entirely.
“You don’t understand what it’s like to owe Gabriel Reyes.”
“I understand what it’s like to have nothing and still refuse to use my child.”
Noah peered around Mrs. Kim.
“Are you really my dad?”
Brendan looked at him, and Cassidy saw something unexpected—grief.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you visit?”
The question broke through every practiced excuse Brendan had prepared.
He could not answer.
Kieran arrived minutes later with his security team. He did not touch Brendan. He simply stood at the opposite end of the hallway and looked at him.
“You entered a home where a child was staying,” Kieran said.
“I needed Cassidy’s help.”
“You’ve taken enough from her.”
Brendan laughed bitterly. “And you haven’t? You paid her rent so she would feel indebted. You filled her life with guards. You want to become the hero because you’re tired of being the villain.”
Kieran absorbed the accusation in silence.
Cassidy looked between them.
“Both of you used protection as another word for control.”
The room went still.
She turned to Kieran. “No more decisions without me.”
Then to Brendan: “No more contact with Noah until a court and a therapist say it is safe.”
Brendan’s face collapsed.
“You can’t—”
“I can.”
Kieran instructed his men to escort Brendan outside and deliver him to the federal investigators waiting nearby. Brendan did not resist.
Before leaving, he looked at Cassidy.
“Elena made a second recording.”
Kieran stopped.
“What recording?”
“She didn’t trust you either.”
Brendan smiled without humor.
“The real evidence was never on the necklace.”
“Where is it?” Cassidy asked.
Brendan looked toward Noah.
“In the one place Reyes would never search.”
That night, Cassidy unpacked the small box of baby possessions she had carried through three apartments.
At the bottom was a stuffed rabbit Brendan had mailed anonymously before Noah’s first birthday.
Cassidy opened a repaired seam beneath its ear.
Inside she found a second drive and a letter addressed in handwriting she did not recognize.
CASSIDY—IF MY BROTHER FINDS THIS, KIERAN WILL BE BLAMED FOR MY DEATH. YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON BRENDAN SAID WOULD CHOOSE A CHILD OVER MONEY.
