Chapter 16 - The Trap at the Harbor

Thomas Harper survived the prison transport attack.

That was the good news.

The bad news was Adrian Hale had taken him.

Federal agents assumed Adrian intended to kill Thomas.

Miles disagreed.

“He needs something.”

They gathered at Cole Security headquarters.

Nora.

Evan.

Miles.

Caleb.

Rachel Monroe.

Lily.

Eleanor had attempted to attend.

Everyone unanimously refused.

She called them cowards.

Rachel displayed photographs.

“Adrian's network has collapsed.”

“Then why attack a federal convoy?” Nora asked.

“Desperation.”

Evan shook his head.

“No.”

Rachel looked at him.

“What?”

“Adrian isn't impulsive.”

“Magnolia Point?”

“Calculated.”

“He almost blew himself up.”

“He believed he could escape through the tunnel.”

Caleb nodded.

“He did.”

Nora looked at Evan.

“So what does he want from Thomas?”

Evan stared at the map.

Then understood.

“The account.”

“What account?” Miles asked.

Evan looked at him.

“Your father kept reserves.”

“Money?”

“Victor Hale's network moved hundreds of millions.”

Miles frowned.

“My father's assets were frozen.”

“Known assets.”

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Offshore reserve.”

“Exactly.”

“How much?”

Evan looked at Miles.

“Potentially two hundred million.”

Miles nearly laughed.

“Of course.”

Nora asked, “And Adrian needs Thomas to access it?”

“Probably.”

Rachel sighed.

“You said probably.”

Nora smiled.

“He infected all of us.”

Evan almost laughed.

A message arrived on Nora's phone.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

She froze.

Evan immediately noticed.

“What?”

She opened it.

A photograph.

Thomas tied to a chair.

Behind him:

Charleston Harbor.

Then text.

BRING MILES HARPER TO TERMINAL SEVEN.

Miles stared.

“Me?”

Another message.

MIDNIGHT.

Evan took the phone.

“No.”

Nora smiled faintly.

“You haven't entirely improved.”

“Working on it.”

Miles stepped forward.

“I'll go.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Absolutely not.”

“If Adrian needs a Harper—”

“Then we're not handing him one.”

Miles looked at Evan.

“What would old you do?”

“Bring twenty armed men.”

“And new you?”

Evan thought.

“Bring federal agents and twenty armed men.”

Nora laughed.

“Progress.”

They planned for three hours.

Terminal Seven was an abandoned shipping facility once owned by Victor Hale.

Two entrances.

One rail tunnel.

Direct waterfront access.

Rachel deployed tactical teams beyond sight.

Evan's security monitored the harbor.

Miles wore a tracker.

Nora was supposed to stay at headquarters.

Nobody expected her to cooperate.

At 11:48, Evan found her climbing into Caleb's SUV.

“No.”

She smiled.

“You say that word a lot.”

“You aren't going inside.”

“Fine.”

He stared.

“That was too easy.”

“I'll remain in the command vehicle.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“No.”

Evan closed his eyes.

Miles laughed.

“I almost miss when she hired you.”

“Get in the car.”

At midnight Miles entered Terminal Seven alone.

Adrian waited.

Thomas sat nearby.

His face was bruised.

When he saw Miles, something shifted.

“You came.”

Miles looked at him.

“For Adrian.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Adrian held a laptop.

“Your family biometric authorization.”

Miles frowned.

“What?”

“Your father created the offshore reserve with genetic succession controls.”

Thomas spat blood.

“I told him nothing.”

Adrian hit him.

Miles stepped forward.

“Stop.”

“Then cooperate.”

Miles looked at his father.

Thomas whispered, “Don't.”

Miles almost laughed.

“All my life you demanded I obey.”

“Not this.”

“Why?”

“Because once he has the money, everyone dies.”

Adrian smiled.

“Dramatic.”

Thomas looked at Miles.

“Your mother discovered the account.”

Miles froze.

“What?”

“She threatened to report us.”

“My mother?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I didn't kill her.”

Miles's jaw tightened.

“Then what happened?”

“Victor did.”

Everything stopped.

Adrian's smile vanished.

Thomas continued.

“Your father murdered my wife,” he told Adrian.

“Liar.”

“He arranged the car crash.”

Adrian grabbed him.

“Shut up.”

“And I protected him.”

Miles stared.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Victor killed Mom?”

“Yes.”

The word destroyed whatever remained between father and son.

Miles stepped backward.

Adrian shouted.

“Open the account.”

“No.”

He raised a gun.

Miles didn't move.

“Do it.”

“No.”

Adrian pointed toward Thomas.

“I'll kill him.”

Miles looked at his father.

Then something unexpected happened.

Thomas laughed.

“Do it.”

Adrian stared.

Thomas looked at Miles.

“Don't become me.”

Miles's eyes filled.

It was the closest his father had ever come to an apology.

Adrian fired.

The gunshot echoed.

Thomas jerked.

Miles shouted.

Federal tactical teams moved.

Gunfire erupted.

Evan entered through the east side.

Caleb from the west.

Adrian grabbed Miles.

Gun to his head.

“Back!”

Everyone froze.

Nora watched from the command vehicle.

For thirty seconds.

Then broke her promise.

She entered through the office corridor.

Adrian dragged Miles toward the dock.

Evan followed at distance.

“Let him go.”

“You always say that.”

“And you never listen.”

Adrian laughed.

“Drop your gun.”

Evan did.

Caleb whispered through comms, “Don't.”

Evan ignored him.

Adrian smiled.

“There. Nora trained you well.”

A voice behind Adrian said, “Apparently not well enough.”

Nora.

Everyone turned.

Evan looked horrified.

“Nora.”

“Hi.”

Adrian laughed.

“You really are impossible.”

“So I've heard.”

She held Samuel Bennett's brass key.

Adrian's expression changed.

“You want this?”

“What does it open?”

“The final reserve box.”

Thomas had told investigators months earlier that a physical encryption key remained missing.

Nora had realized Samuel's brass key was modified.

A hidden digital component.

“You want the money,” Nora said.

“Give it to me.”

“Let Miles go.”

Adrian pressed the gun harder.

“No.”

Nora looked at Miles.

“Ready?”

He frowned.

“For what?”

She threw the key into Charleston Harbor.

Adrian screamed.

He released Miles instinctively and lunged toward the railing.

Evan moved.

Caleb moved.

Miles dropped.

Adrian fired wildly.

One bullet struck Evan's vest.

Nora screamed.

Evan tackled Adrian.

Both men crashed through a weakened railing.

Adrian fell.

Evan caught the edge.

Nora ran.

“EVAN!”

Miles grabbed Evan's arm.

Caleb grabbed the other.

Below them Adrian clung to Evan's leg.

“Help me!”

Evan looked down.

Adrian stared up.

For a moment the old Evan returned.

He could kick once.

Problem solved.

No trial.

No escape.

No future threat.

Adrian saw the decision.

“So do it.”

Evan's face changed.

“No.”

He reached down.

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Evan grabbed his wrist.

Caleb helped pull both men upward.

Federal agents immediately restrained Adrian.

He looked at Evan with disbelief.

“You should've let me fall.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

Evan looked toward Nora.

Then back.

“Because I don't want to be the man who would.”

Nora's eyes filled.

Adrian was arrested.

Thomas survived the gunshot.

Barely.

The brass key?

Gone forever.

So was the offshore fortune.

Miles watched the harbor.

“Two hundred million.”

Nora shrugged.

“Expensive key.”

Evan looked at her.

“You threw away two hundred million dollars.”

“Wasn't mine.”

“You own eighty million in land.”

“Also apparently not enough excitement.”

He laughed.

Then pulled her into his arms.

“You promised to stay in the vehicle.”

“No, I specifically refused to promise.”

“Right.”

Miles looked toward Caleb.

“Are they always this exhausting?”

“Yes.”

At sunrise, Adrian Hale entered federal custody.

Thomas Harper entered surgery.

And for the first time in fifty years, nobody from the Hale network remained free.

The war was over.

But Evan still had one unfinished question.

May you like

And he intended to ask it in the place where everything began.
