Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the Fear

Anthony Russo had known me since I was twelve.

He taught me how to drive.

He sat beside my father at Sunday dinners.

After my father died, Anthony became the closest thing I had to an older brother.

Trusting him had never felt like a decision.

It had felt inherited.

Which is why the truth hurt differently.

Rafael arrived at my mother’s house before sunrise.

Claire sat at the kitchen table with Hope asleep against her chest.

I did not ask her to leave the room.

This involved her.

She deserved every fact.

Rafael placed a folder on the table.

“We found access logs.”

I opened it.

Anthony had accessed residence security footage repeatedly during the week Claire discovered she was pregnant.

“Why?”

“Not sure.”

“Was he authorized?”

“He had emergency access.”

Claire looked at me.

“Emergency?”

“For threats.”

“Meaning he could see everywhere?”

“Common areas.”

Her face tightened.

Another reminder of the house she had escaped.

Rafael continued.

“There’s more. The message telling you to stop searching? Building camera shows Anthony entering the office two hours before it appeared.”

My hands clenched.

“Why would he help Claire disappear?” Claire asked.

“He didn’t,” I said.

Understanding came slowly.

“He wanted Dominic to think I chose to disappear completely.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

Rafael answered.

“Because Dominic was distracted.”

I looked at him.

He slid another document toward me.

During the months I had searched for Claire, Anthony had quietly expanded his influence across several businesses.

He replaced managers.

Moved accounts.

Formed partnerships.

Pushed me toward increasingly aggressive decisions.

At the time, I had barely noticed.

Claire saw it immediately.

“He used me.”

“Yes,” I said.

“And Victor?”

“Probably another tool.”

Rafael leaned back.

“We think Anthony fed Victor information. Told him where Claire was. Maybe promised access in exchange for pressuring Dominic.”

I felt sick.

My obsession with control had created the perfect environment for Anthony.

He did not need to invent Claire’s fear.

He only needed to exploit it.

That distinction mattered.

Because I refused to let betrayal become an excuse to absolve myself.

“Anthony didn’t make you leave,” I told Claire.

She looked at me.

“No.”

“He made it worse.”

“Yes.”

“But I still gave him the opening.”

Claire’s expression softened slightly.

“That’s true.”

Rafael looked between us as if witnessing a language he had never heard.

We sent everything to Detective Ruiz.

Again, I resisted the impulse to handle Anthony myself.

By afternoon, authorities had issued warrants related to financial crimes and stalking evidence.

Victor’s role remained unclear.

Then Victor called me.

I almost did not answer.

Claire stood beside me.

“Put it on speaker.”

I did.

Victor’s voice came through.

“Moretti.”

“Victor.”

“You turned police onto me.”

“You followed my wife.”

“I didn’t.”

“The man you bailed out did.”

“Cross wasn’t working for me.”

“You paid his bail.”

“Because Anthony asked me.”

Claire inhaled sharply.

I looked at Rafael.

He was already recording.

Victor continued.

“You think I’m stupid enough to threaten a baby?”

“You blamed me for your brother.”

“I wanted you ruined. Not a child.”

“Then why help Anthony?”

“Because he promised me your businesses once you collapsed.”

There it was.

Greed.

Revenge.

Opportunity.

All built on the same foundation.

“What changed?” I asked.

“Anthony stopped answering my calls.”

“Where is he?”

“If I knew, I wouldn’t be calling you.”

“You expect me to believe this?”

“No.”

Victor paused.

“But you should know Anthony has a second plan.”

“What?”

“He kept saying if Claire ever came back, everything moved faster.”

Claire’s hand tightened around mine.

“What moves faster?”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“Your fall.”

Then the call ended.

Rafael immediately forwarded the recording to Ruiz.

Claire looked at me.

“What could he do?”

“Financially? Plenty.”

“To us?”

I hesitated.

She noticed.

“Dominic.”

“Anthony knows almost everything about my former operations.”

“Could he hurt you legally?”

“Yes.”

“Could you go to prison?”

“Yes.”

Claire went silent.

I had avoided thinking about that.

Dismantling my empire did not erase the past.

If Anthony gave prosecutors enough evidence, I could lose years.

Maybe more.

That evening, I sat on the porch alone.

Claire joined me.

“Would you run?” she asked.

“No.”

“Even if you knew you’d go to prison?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because running is just another version of controlling the outcome.”

She sat beside me.

“And because of Hope?”

“Yes.”

I looked through the window.

My mother held Hope in the kitchen.

“I want my daughter to know where I am, even if where I am is somewhere I hate.”

Claire was quiet.

“What about me?”

The question surprised me.

“What about you?”

“If you went away.”

I looked at her.

“I wouldn’t ask you to wait.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“What did you ask?”

Her eyes stayed on the dark ocean.

“Would you want me to?”

My heart tightened.

“Yes.”

The honesty frightened me.

“But wanting isn’t demanding.”

Claire nodded.

We sat without speaking.

Then she rested her head briefly against my shoulder.

I did not move.

Did not turn.

Did not risk breaking the moment.

After a minute, she sat upright.

“Don’t make a big deal out of that.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“You’re smiling.”

“I’m not.”

“You absolutely are.”

Maybe I was.

The next morning brought the first genuine good news.

Cross had reappeared voluntarily.

He had gone into hiding because Anthony threatened him.

Now he was cooperating.

His testimony established that Anthony had orchestrated the surveillance.

He also confirmed something worse.

Anthony had planned to abduct Claire.

Not seven months ago.

Now.

Hope had made Claire more valuable as leverage.

The room went silent when Ruiz explained it.

“We think Anthony wants Dominic to transfer controlling stakes in several companies.”

Claire stared at me.

“Because he thinks you’ll do anything for us.”

“He’s right.”

“No.”

She stood.

“You are not giving him anything.”

“Claire—”

“This is what he expects. You make a decision because you’re scared.”

“He has threatened you and Hope.”

“And we work with the police.”

I stared at her.

Months ago she had been the one running.

Now she was standing inside my fear and demanding I not let it rule me.

It almost made me laugh at the symmetry.

Ruiz’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression sharpened.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“They found Anthony’s car.”

“Where?”

“Near Boston Harbor.”

“Is he there?”

“No.”

“But they found a phone in the vehicle.”

“Whose?”

Ruiz’s eyes shifted toward Claire.

“Your aunt’s.”

Claire went white.

Her aunt—the woman who had helped hide her during the first weeks after she disappeared—had not answered calls since the previous night.

Anthony had changed the game.

He no longer needed to reach Claire directly.

He had taken someone she loved.

May you like

And this time, the choice would belong to Claire.
