Chapter 4 - The Price of Her Brother's Life

The harbor warehouse smelled like rust and seawater.

Bella entered alone.

"Leo?"

A light came on.

Her brother sat tied to a chair.

His lip was bleeding.

But he was alive.

"Bella, get out!"

Arthur Harrison stepped from behind a support column.

Bella stopped.

"You."

Harrison looked exhausted.

"You shouldn't have come."

"You kidnapped my brother."

"No."

"He's literally tied to a chair."

"I didn't order this."

Another man walked from the darkness.

Richard Mallory.

Police Commissioner.

The man whose photograph appeared at charity dinners and school safety campaigns.

Tonight he wore a dark coat and carried a pistol.

"Miss Rossi."

Bella's hand moved toward the ledger beneath her coat.

Mallory smiled.

"Arthur tells me you're stubborn."

"Arthur says lots of things."

Harrison lowered his eyes.

Bella looked at him.

"You work for Mallory."

"For longer than I'm proud of."

Mallory laughed.

"Arthur's favorite hobby is regret."

Bella looked at Leo.

"The ledger for my brother."

Mallory extended his hand.

"Now."

"Untie him."

"You don't negotiate."

"I walked in holding the thing you're desperate to get. That sounds like leverage."

Leo smiled slightly despite his split lip.

Mallory's amusement disappeared.

He raised the gun.

Bella's courage almost broke.

Almost.

Then a voice came from above.

"I wouldn't."

Dante stood on a catwalk.

Marco appeared near another entrance.

Mallory grabbed Bella, pressing the gun against her ribs.

Dante froze.

"Let her go."

"Drop your weapon."

Dante did.

Immediately.

Bella stared.

This man controlled rooms by entering them.

Yet he surrendered without hesitation when Mallory threatened her.

"Take me instead," Dante said.

Mallory laughed.

"How touching."

Harrison shifted.

"Richard. This is enough."

Mallory turned slightly.

That was all Harrison needed.

He struck Mallory's arm.

The gun fired.

Bella dropped.

Chaos broke loose.

Marco rushed toward Leo.

Dante came down from the platform.

Mallory fired again.

Harrison fell.

Then Mallory escaped through a side exit.

Dante reached Bella.

His hands moved over her arms, shoulders, face.

"Are you hit?"

"No."

His fingers were shaking.

Bella had never seen that.

Not once.

"I'm okay."

He shut his eyes briefly.

Leo shouted that he was fine.

Bella crawled toward Harrison.

Blood spread across his shirt.

"Why did you help us?"

Harrison coughed.

"Your mother."

"What about her?"

"I owed her."

Bella pressed fabric against the wound.

"Who is Shepherd?"

Harrison's eyes drifted.

"Not Mallory."

"We know."

"Woman."

"What woman?"

"Senator Morrison's wife."

Bella froze.

"Evelyn?"

Everyone knew Evelyn Morrison.

Philanthropist.

Donor.

Board chair.

The woman photographed beside sick children and governors.

Harrison struggled for breath.

"Her father built the network. She inherited it."

"And my father?"

"Found their accounts."

"Who killed him?"

"Mallory."

Bella's chest constricted.

"My mother?"

Harrison started crying.

"I told them where she was."

Bella stared.

"You?"

"I thought they'd scare her. Get the documents. I didn't know."

"You gave them my mother."

"I'm sorry."

Bella wanted to hate him enough to enjoy his pain.

She couldn't.

Not because he deserved forgiveness.

He didn't.

But because the man bleeding on the floor had spent fifteen years becoming smaller inside his own cowardice.

"Federal prosecutor," Harrison whispered.

"What?"

"Naomi Grant. Her father knew Maria. Naomi's clean."

Harrison survived surgery.

Naomi Grant arrived before sunrise.

She believed enough of the ledger to open a federal investigation, but not enough to move openly.

"Evelyn owns influence," Naomi explained. "Judges. officers. officials. You accuse her publicly without direct evidence, she'll bury it."

Bella looked at Dante.

"So we get direct evidence."

Dante already knew the look on her face.

"No."

"Stop saying that."

"You are not approaching Evelyn Morrison."

"She knew my parents."

"That's exactly why."

Naomi intervened.

"Evelyn might speak if Bella convinces her she wants protection from Dante."

Dante looked at the prosecutor like he was evaluating how much prison time came with throwing a federal employee through a window.

Bella almost smiled.

Two days later, she entered Evelyn Morrison's estate wearing a hidden microphone.

Evelyn greeted her warmly.

Too warmly.

"My poor girl. Dante has placed you in an impossible position."

Bella lowered her eyes.

"I want out."

Truth made lies easier.

Evelyn touched her hand.

"I can help you."

"How?"

"Give me your father's ledger."

Bella's pulse jumped.

There.

The first admission.

"You knew my father?"

"I knew both your parents."

Across town, Dante heard every word through the transmitter.

Bella forced herself to remain calm.

"My mother died because of that ledger."

Evelyn's smile faded slightly.

"Your mother died because she couldn't accept the world as it was."

"You mean because she wouldn't stay quiet."

"Sometimes survival requires compromise."

"Like Harrison?"

Evelyn laughed softly.

"Arthur always understood fear better than courage."

Bella looked around the estate.

Photographs showed Evelyn with judges, police chiefs, senators, charity boards.

A respectable empire.

Built over something rotten.

"My father discovered you."

"He discovered bookkeeping discrepancies he was never supposed to see."

"And Vittorio Castello?"

Evelyn's eyes sharpened.

"Vittorio became inconvenient when he decided legitimacy mattered more than loyalty."

Bella's breath caught.

"Your network killed him too."

Evelyn didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

The microphone caught everything.

Then Evelyn looked at Bella's blouse.

Too long.

Bella's stomach dropped.

"That's a lovely necklace."

Bella wasn't wearing one.

Evelyn reached toward her collar.

Found the microphone.

For half a second, both women stared at it.

Then Evelyn smiled.

"Your mother made the same mistake."

Bella ran.

Two men blocked the hall.

Mallory appeared behind her.

Still alive.

Still free.

He grabbed Bella.

The recording device smashed beneath his shoe.

But the transmission had already gone out.

Dante heard Bella scream.

He was moving before Naomi could stop him.

Bella was dragged into an underground garage.

Evelyn entered a black sedan.

Mallory shoved Bella into the back.

Dante appeared at the garage entrance.

"Bella!"

Mallory fired.

Dante dove behind a pillar.

Bella kicked backward.

Her heel connected with Mallory's knee.

He cursed.

Evelyn slapped Bella.

"Enough."

Pain exploded across Bella's cheek.

Something inside her snapped.

Not fear.

Patience.

Years of swallowing insults from guests.

Reynolds touching her arm when she told him not to.

Harrison firing her because he thought she was powerless.

Men deciding what she should know.

Where she should go.

How afraid she should be.

Bella grabbed Evelyn's wrist.

Twisted.

Evelyn screamed.

Bella threw open the car door.

Mallory caught her ankle.

Then Dante reached them.

He hit Mallory once.

Mallory collapsed.

Dante stood over him.

Raised his fist.

Bella saw something frightening arrive in Dante's eyes.

Years of grief.

His father.

Matteo.

Her parents.

Every betrayal.

"Dante."

He looked at her.

"Don't."

His fist remained raised.

"Don't become the man they keep telling everyone you are."

His breathing slowed.

Then his hand lowered.

Federal agents flooded the garage.

Naomi personally cuffed Mallory.

Evelyn ran into a service tunnel and found herself trapped behind an emergency gate.

By sunrise, dozens of warrants were being prepared.

But Bella's relief lasted only until Dante disappeared.

She found him on the roof of the Grand Imperior.

"What are you doing?"

"Leaving."

"What?"

He looked over the city.

"Naomi's investigation will expose everything connected to Shepherd."

"So?"

"It'll expose me too."

Bella stepped closer.

"I've done things, Bella."

"I know."

"Things your world doesn't excuse because I happened to protect you."

"I know."

"I may lose companies. Money. Freedom."

"Okay."

He turned.

"Okay?"

"What do you want me to say? That loving someone magically makes their past disappear?"

The word hung between them.

Loving.

Bella hadn't planned it.

Neither spoke.

Dante finally whispered, "You love me?"

Bella stared at him.

"That is absolutely not the important part of that sentence."

"It's the only part I heard."

Despite everything, she almost laughed.

Then Dante stepped closer.

"Bella."

"No. You're not running."

"I wasn't."

"You said leaving."

"My organization."

She stopped.

Dante looked toward the city.

"I'm ending it."

"What does that mean?"

"Anything illegal gets sold, closed or surrendered. I cooperate."

"Why?"

"For years I thought the only choice was whether I became better or worse than my father."

He looked at Bella.

"Turns out the real choice is whether I keep building the same world."

Bella's anger softened.

"And if it costs everything?"

"It won't cost everything."

"How do you know?"

Dante lifted his hand toward her face but stopped before touching her.

"Because everything isn't the businesses."

Bella understood.

Before she could answer, Marco burst onto the roof.

"We've got a problem."

Dante turned.

"What?"

"The federal team recovered Mallory's phone."

"And?"

Marco's face had lost its humor.

"There was a scheduled message sent twenty minutes ago."

"To whom?"

"We don't know."

"What did it say?"

Marco handed him the phone.

Dante read.

Bella watched his expression change.

The message contained five words.

If I fall, burn Room 804.

Bella went cold.

"The letter."

"What letter?" Marco asked.

"My mother hid the ledger there. What if she hid something else?"

Dante was already moving.

They reached the eighth floor minutes later.

Room 804 smelled of old smoke.

Behind the wall where the ledger had rested, Bella found another cavity.

Inside was a small envelope.

Not addressed to Bella.

Not Maria.

Not Giovanni.

It carried one name.

DANTE CASTELLO.

And the handwriting belonged to Vittorio.

Dante's father.

He stared at it.

Bella looked at him.

"Open it."

Dante didn't move.

The most feared man she'd ever met suddenly looked sixteen years old.

"No," he whispered.

"Why?"

"Because if my father knew the truth..."

He swallowed.

"...then I've hated a dead man for half my life for something he may have been trying to stop."

Bella took his hand.

"Then maybe it's time you find out who he really was."

Dante looked at the envelope.

But before he could break the seal, Marco received another call.

His face hardened.

"Evelyn wasn't working alone."

Dante looked up.

"What?"

"The federal raid just found transfer orders."

"To whom?"

Marco looked at Bella.

"Someone inside Castello Capital."

Silence.

Dante's eyes changed.

The conspiracy wasn't finished.

Someone who had stood beside Dante through everything had been secretly receiving Shepherd's money.

May you like

And that person now knew exactly where Bella and Dante were.
