Chapter 13 - The Attorney Who Knew Everything

Samantha Reed had known Harper since she was fourteen.
She attended Daniel Quinn's funeral.
She helped Eleanor settle insurance paperwork.
She reviewed Harper's first apartment lease.
When Derek proposed, Samantha joked that Harper should make him sign a prenup.
Harper had trusted her without thought.
Maybe that was why the betrayal hurt differently.
Derek had conditioned Harper to question herself.
Kinsley had envied her.
Samantha had simply stood beside the family for nine years and lied.
Roman replayed security footage.
Samantha leaving the lake house.
Elias following five minutes later after receiving a forged message.
Roman's voice was quiet.
"She planned it."
Harper sat at the dining table.
"Why?"
"Money."
"No."
Roman looked at her.
"Why no?"
"Because Samantha has money."
"Everyone wants more."
"Not like this."
Harper stood.
"She didn't take the seventeen million when she could have manipulated me into signing anything."
Roman considered.
"Then what?"
Harper thought of her father.
"Samantha knew Dad."
"So?"
"She always said they met through legal work."
Roman's eyes narrowed.
"What if that wasn't true?"
Eleanor entered.
"I can answer that."
Harper turned.
Her mother looked pale.
"Samantha knew your father before I did."
Harper froze.
"What?"
"They worked together briefly."
"Doing what?"
"Investigations."
Roman leaned forward.
"What kind?"
"Corporate fraud."
Eleanor clasped her hands.
"Daniel said Samantha was brilliant but reckless."
"Why did they stop working together?"
"I never knew."
Harper whispered, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Eleanor gave her a sad look.
"Until this week, I didn't know half the details mattered."
Roman's people investigated.
Within an hour they uncovered something.
Samantha Reed had once worked as outside counsel for a firm owned indirectly by Viktor Saran.
Nine years ago.
Same period as Daniel's investigation.
Harper stared at the screen.
"She knew Viktor."
Roman nodded.
Harper's phone rang.
Samantha.
Roman gestured.
"Speaker."
Harper answered.
"Samantha."
"Harper."
Her voice sounded calm.
Almost maternal.
"Where is Elias?"
"Alive."
"Let me hear him."
A muffled sound.
Then Elias:
"Boss, don't—"
Impact.
Silence.
Roman's face hardened.
Samantha returned.
"He's alive."
Harper's voice shook.
"Why?"
"Because your father made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"He trusted Roman Vale."
Roman's jaw tightened.
Samantha continued.
"And he trusted me."
Harper stood.
"You worked for Viktor."
"I worked for whoever paid."
"So you betrayed Dad."
Silence.
Harper's heart pounded.
"You gave Viktor his location."
Samantha laughed softly.
"No."
"Then who?"
"You already know Julian did."
"He changed his mind."
"Too late."
Harper's eyes filled.
"What did you do?"
"I told Viktor Daniel had created copies."
Roman leaned toward the phone.
"Where are you?"
Samantha ignored him.
"Harper, your father destroyed my life."
Harper stared.
"How?"
"I spent five years building a career. Daniel decided morality mattered more than survival."
"He exposed criminals."
"He exposed clients."
"Human traffickers."
A pause.
"Some of them."
Disgust filled Harper.
Samantha's voice sharpened.
"Don't judge choices you never had to make."
Harper remembered her father's letter.
Kindness is not weakness.
Trust is not stupidity.
The shame belongs to the person who exploits it.
Harper said quietly, "You always had a choice."
Silence.
Then Samantha's tone changed.
"You sound like Daniel."
"Good."
"You have no idea what that cost him."
"It cost him his life."
"And it cost me everything."
"No."
Harper's voice strengthened.
"Your decisions cost you."
Roman watched her.
Samantha exhaled.
"Bring Roman to the old courthouse annex."
"When?"
"One hour."
"Why?"
"Viktor wants to talk."
Roman almost laughed.
Harper said, "And Elias?"
"Trade."
"What trade?"
"Roman and Daniel's remaining keys for Elias."
Roman shook his head.
Harper ignored him.
"Fine."
"Harper."
Samantha's voice softened.
"Come alone."
Harper looked at Roman.
"No."
A pause.
"What?"
"I don't make deals with people who lie to me anymore."
Roman's eyes flickered with pride.
"If you want the keys, Roman comes."
Samantha went silent.
Then:
"Forty-five minutes."
Call ended.
Roman looked at Harper.
"You handled that well."
"I'm terrified."
"Both can be true."
Eleanor grabbed Harper's hand.
"You're not going."
Harper looked at her mother.
"Mom."
"I almost lost your father to this world and then I did lose him."
"I know."
"I won't lose you."
Harper hugged her.
"You won't."
"How do you know?"
"I don't."
Eleanor held tighter.
Roman looked away, giving them privacy.
Harper whispered, "Dad left the truth because he wanted someone to finish what he started."
"That doesn't have to be you."
"No."
Harper pulled back.
"But I choose it."
The old courthouse annex had been closed for renovation.
Federal agents positioned covertly outside.
Agent Hale coordinated entry teams.
Roman and Harper entered through the main lobby.
No visible weapons.
Samantha waited upstairs.
Elias sat restrained beside her.
Viktor stood near the old judge's bench.
Marcus beside him.
Harper looked at Samantha.
She felt strangely calm.
"You were the number I meant to text."
Samantha's expression shifted.
Harper almost laughed.
"If I'd typed correctly, none of this would have happened."
"Roman would eventually have found you."
"Maybe."
Harper looked at him.
"But I typed the wrong number."
Roman murmured, "Best clerical error of my life."
Viktor rolled his eyes.
"Romance. How exhausting."
Harper faced him.
"Let Elias go."
"Keys."
Roman held up a case.
"First Elias."
Viktor nodded.
Samantha cut Elias's restraints.
He stood slowly.
Marcus aimed at him.
Roman opened the case.
Several chips.
Viktor's eyes narrowed.
"Which is real?"
Roman smiled.
"All of them."
Viktor stared.
Roman continued.
"Daniel designed redundancy."
Harper hadn't known that.
Apparently Roman had found additional backups.
Viktor's confidence wavered.
Roman closed the case.
"If you kill any of us, copies reach federal servers."
Samantha's face changed.
"You're bluffing."
Harper looked at her.
"No."
Roman glanced at Harper.
She understood.
He was bluffing.
But Samantha didn't.
Harper smiled.
"Dad taught him."
Viktor looked toward Marcus.
Then Samantha.
His empire was collapsing.
He knew it.
"Give me the case."
Roman shook his head.
"No."
Viktor raised his weapon toward Harper.
Roman moved instantly in front of her.
Viktor laughed.
"There it is."
Harper stepped beside Roman.
Not behind.
Viktor's eyes narrowed.
"You think this ends well?"
Harper said, "For us?"
A sound came from outside.
Sirens.
Viktor's face tightened.
Harper smiled.
"Yes."
Samantha spun toward the windows.
"You called federal agents?"
Harper looked at her.
"You taught me always to have counsel present."
Samantha stared.
Then chaos.
Marcus grabbed Elias.
Roman attacked.
Samantha ran.
Viktor fired.
Harper ducked.
Federal agents stormed the building.
Agent Hale shouted commands.
Roman fought Marcus.
Elias joined.
Viktor moved toward a side stairwell.
Harper followed.
"Viktor!"
He turned.
Gun aimed at her.
Harper froze.
He smiled.
"Daniel made this same mistake."
"What?"
"Believing truth protects anyone."
Harper's heart hammered.
"No."
She stared at him.
"His mistake was believing men like you could stay powerful forever."
Viktor's finger tightened.
A shot exploded.
Harper flinched.
Viktor's weapon fell.
Agent Hale stood behind him.
"Federal agent! Down!"
Viktor staggered, wounded in the shoulder.
Agents surrounded him.
For the first time, Chicago's invisible king looked old.
Small.
Harper stared.
Viktor looked at her.
"Your father still died."
Harper's eyes filled.
"Yes."
She stepped closer.
"But you don't get to decide what his death means."
Agents took him away.
Harper turned.
Roman stood across the hall.
Marcus was in custody.
Elias alive.
Samantha—
Gone.
Harper's stomach dropped.
"Where is she?"
Agent Hale looked around.
"She slipped out during entry."
Roman's phone buzzed.
A message.
Photograph of Eleanor.
Again.
Harper's heart stopped.
Samantha had taken her mother.
Below the picture:
Daniel always left me cleaning up his mistakes. One last time.
Harper stared at the screen.
Roman swore.
Viktor had fallen.
But Samantha Reed was far more personal.
And she had nothing left to lose.
May you like
