Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Isabella Moretti was living under another name in Wisconsin.

Adrian didn’t speak during the drive.

When she opened the door, mother and son stared at each other for nearly a minute.

Then Adrian asked one question.

“Why?”

Isabella began crying.

She had disappeared because Salvatore threatened Marco and Adrian.

She had discovered his financial network years before my father did.

Lorenzo helped her disappear.

My father later discovered the same scheme.

“Did Lorenzo kill Vittorio?” I asked.

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“Lorenzo tried to save him.”

She explained the recording.

Salvatore had forced her to read a scripted statement over the telephone. Later, someone altered the audio.

“Who sabotaged my father’s car?”

“I don’t know.”

“But Salvatore ordered it?”

“Yes.”

“Who approved it?”

She looked at Adrian.

“No one.”

That contradicted everything.

“Salvatore wanted everyone to believe he answered to someone more powerful. That was how he controlled people.”

The mysterious superior had never existed.

It was theater.

Fear.

Manipulation.

Just like the Moretti reputation itself.

Adrian sat beside his mother.

“Why didn’t you come back after Dad died?”

“Because Salvatore was still alive.”

“And now?”

She touched his face.

“Now you found me.”

It should have been the end.

It wasn’t.

Because Marco made a decision that changed the family forever.

He turned himself in.

He admitted the theft.

He gave prosecutors passwords, accounts, names, and recordings.

He accepted that he might go to prison.

Before surrendering, he came to see me.

His cheek had healed.

My wrist had too.

“I deserved the slap,” he said.

“You deserved consequences.”

He nodded.

“Those too.”

Then he gave me a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my father.

On the back, Vittorio had written:

Elena will understand the numbers someday. I hope she understands people better than I did.

I cried for the first time since the investigation began.

Not because my father was dead.

I had cried for that twelve years ago.

I cried because, for the first time, I understood how hard he had fought to protect me.

Adrian found me outside.

He didn’t touch me.

He simply stood beside me.

Eventually I asked:

“What happens to Moretti?”

“The company?”

“The name.”

He looked toward Chicago.

“I change what it means.”

I believed he wanted to.

But wanting redemption and earning it were different things.

“You can’t erase the past.”

“I know.”

“You can’t buy forgiveness.”

“I know.”

“And I’m not becoming your moral compass.”

That finally made him smile.

“I would never give you a job with that much overtime.”

I laughed.

Unexpectedly.

It felt strange.

Good strange.

The federal case expanded.

Salvatore faced charges related to fraud, corruption, conspiracy, and my father’s death.

Marco cooperated.

Isabella returned to Chicago.

And I thought the worst was behind us.

Then I received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph taken that morning.

Adrian and me outside the courthouse.

Across my face was a red X.

On the back:

SALVATORE WAS NEVER THE KING.

Below it was the black crown.

The conspiracy wasn’t dead.

May you like

It had simply lost one of its princes.
