Chapter 8 - The Hearing

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.
Vanessa sat beside her attorney wearing a navy dress and almost no makeup.
She looked fragile.
That was deliberate.
I wore cream.
Pearls.
And Thomas’s wedding ring on a chain beneath my blouse.
Vanessa’s attorney argued that our conflict was a family misunderstanding.
He described me as “emotionally distressed.”
Rebecca stood.
“My client was struck with a plate after refusing to transfer property.”
The attorney objected.
The judge overruled him.
Then came the documents.
The forged loan.
The forged trust.
The guardianship petition.
The fabricated medical assessment.
Vanessa’s handwritten timeline.
One by one, the story she had constructed around me collapsed.
Then Daniel testified.
That was the hardest part.
He admitted he had pressured me.
Admitted he had believed Vanessa when she described me as difficult.
Admitted he had failed to protect me.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You promised me,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“I promised to be your husband. I never promised to help you steal from my mother.”
For the first time, Vanessa cried.
Maybe the tears were real.
Maybe some part of her finally understood what she had destroyed.
The judge denied every request to restrict my control over my property.
Then referred additional matters for criminal investigation.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
I refused interviews.
I wasn’t interested in becoming famous.
I wanted my life back.
But life rarely returns exactly as it was.
Two days later, Daniel came to my house.
“I’m moving.”
“Where?”
“Small apartment downtown.”
“What about my house?”
“I’m giving it back.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes, I do.”
He handed me the keys.
Then he said something I never expected.
“I want to pay rent.”
I smiled faintly.
“For the apartment?”
“For the last four years.”
“That would take a while.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
He laughed through tears.
It was the first honest laugh we had shared in months.
Then my phone rang.
Rebecca.
She had news about the lake property.
Someone had filed a purchase agreement.
Three months earlier.
A buyer had supposedly agreed to pay $1.45 million.
My signature was on that agreement too.
And the closing date?
Friday.
Three days away.
May you like
Someone still intended to sell my lake house.
