Chapter 13 - The Video That Shook the City

At 8:07 Monday morning, every television in Chicago seemed to display Sophie Carter’s face.

Not because of the concert.

Not because of Julian.

Because somebody had released a video.

It showed Sophie entering Julian’s estate late at night.

Another clip showed her leaving Saint Agnes with documents.

Then audio played.

Sophie’s voice:

“We need to make sure nobody finds out.”

It was fake.

Edited from dozens of conversations.

But online, context did not matter.

The caption read:

TEACHER HELPED ROMANO HIDE FINANCIAL EVIDENCE.

By noon, Sophie was placed on administrative leave again.

Reporters filled the sidewalk outside Franklin Elementary.

One shouted:

“Ms. Carter, were you paid by Julian Romano?”

Another:

“Are you romantically involved?”

Another:

“Did you destroy evidence?”

Sophie kept walking.

Then someone yelled:

“Did you sleep with him for money?”

Sophie stopped.

Marco, who was nearby despite Julian’s promise of distance, started forward.

Sophie lifted a hand.

She turned toward the cameras.

“No.”

The crowd quieted.

Sophie looked directly into the nearest lens.

“I am a teacher. I have spent eight years helping children learn to read, multiply, apologize when they hurt someone, and tell the truth even when lying would be easier.”

More cameras rose.

“I did not take money from Julian Romano. I did not destroy evidence. And my private life is not an invitation for strangers to degrade me.”

Someone shouted another question.

Sophie continued.

“If you want a story, here it is. My father uncovered corruption fifteen years ago. People tried to bury it. Now they are trying to bury everyone who refuses to stop asking questions.”

She stepped closer.

“And I’m done being quiet.”

The clip went viral before she reached her car.

Ten million views by evening.

#ImDoneBeingQuiet.

Teachers reposted it.

Parents.

Women discussing online harassment.

Former students.

Even celebrities.

Then Julian did something nobody expected.

He held a press conference.

For years, he had avoided reporters.

That night he walked onto the steps of Romano Holdings before hundreds of cameras.

“My name is Julian Romano.”

Silence.

“The documents connecting Sophie Carter to criminal activity are false.”

He paused.

“She became involved because I asked her to remain beside me at a concert.”

Sophie watched from Rachel’s apartment.

Rachel whispered, “This man is catastrophically in love with you.”

“Quiet.”

Julian continued.

“If Sophie Carter made one mistake, it was trusting me longer than I deserved.”

Sophie’s throat tightened.

“I will cooperate fully with federal investigators. I will release internal records. I will surrender control of every Romano company necessary to establish the truth.”

Reporters erupted.

Then Julian raised one hand.

“One more thing.”

Silence returned.

“To the people who attacked Sophie’s appearance, profession or character because she was photographed beside me…”

Sophie whispered, “Julian, don’t.”

His expression hardened.

“You revealed more about yourselves than you ever revealed about her.”

Rachel slapped the couch.

“Yes!”

Sophie covered her face.

Julian finished.

“Sophie Carter is not my weakness.”

A pause.

“She is the first person in years who reminded me I could choose what kind of man I wanted to become.”

The internet exploded.

Sophie’s phone became unusable.

Millions of shares.

Edits.

Reaction videos.

Headlines.

WHO IS SOPHIE CARTER, THE TEACHER WHO CHANGED JULIAN ROMANO?

Then something else happened.

A comment appeared beneath the livestream.

From an account created minutes earlier.

@DOMINICV.

Beautiful speech, Julian.

Ask Sophie where her mother hid the red ledger.

Sophie stared.

Her mother.

Red ledger.

She called Thomas.

“What red ledger?”

Silence.

“Dad.”

“Elizabeth kept one notebook.”

“Where?”

“She never told me.”

Sophie thought about her mother.

Piano.

Sheet music.

Courage looks like music.

Then she remembered the restored music Julian had sent.

Her mother’s original collection.

Pages repaired after the fire.

Sophie opened the cover.

Nothing.

She flipped through slowly.

Near the final piece, she noticed stitching along the spine.

Red thread.

Her hands shook.

She cut it carefully.

A thin red notebook slid free.

The ledger.

Inside were names.

Payments.

Dates.

Evidence capable of clearing Julian.

And destroying Dominic.

The final page contained something else.

A handwritten letter from Elizabeth.

Sophie,

If you ever read this, I hope the world has become kinder than the one I knew.

Do not trust wealth.

Do not trust fear.

Trust what people choose when they have something to lose.

Sophie swallowed.

At the bottom:

Julian Romano was a frightened young man when Thomas disappeared. Do not punish him forever for being afraid once.

Sophie sat frozen.

Her mother had known Julian.

Known what happened.

And had left Sophie an answer fifteen years before Sophie knew the question.

Her phone rang.

Julian.

She answered.

“I found it.”

“The ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Rachel’s.”

“Sophie, listen carefully. Do not move.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Dominic knows you have it.”

“How?”

“Because Rachel’s building security camera just went offline.”

A knock sounded at the apartment door.

Three slow taps.

The same rhythm Sophie had heard the night everything began.
