Chapter 6 - What Dante Knew

Maya almost forgot Emma was in the room.

Almost.

Caruso watched her face with satisfaction.

“You knew.”

Dante’s voice came through the tiny earpiece.

“Maya, listen to me.”

She wanted to tear it out.

Not now.

Not yet.

Emma looked at her.

“Maya?”

The child’s voice snapped everything back into focus.

Maya looked toward her.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

Emma hugged the rabbit.

“I want Daddy.”

“I know.”

Caruso extended his hand.

“The ledger.”

Maya held it tighter.

“Let her go.”

“Name first.”

“You already know the name.”

His expression changed.

Tiny.

There.

Maya saw it.

“You don’t.”

Caruso smiled.

“Careful.”

“If you knew, Emma wouldn’t be here.”

Silence.

Maya continued.

“You spent eight years looking for whatever my mother hid because you never found the witness.”

Caruso’s eyes hardened.

“You’re guessing.”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“But you just told me I’m right.”

Behind the warehouse walls, Marco whispered, “Good girl.”

Dante shot him a look.

Marco shrugged.

Caruso took one slow breath.

“Samuel Pike.”

Maya’s heart dropped.

He did know.

Or had guessed from her face.

Damn it.

Caruso smiled.

“Thank you.”

Maya realized her mistake.

Then the warehouse door opened behind him.

Connor walked inside.

Maya stared.

“What are you doing?”

Connor did not look at her.

He walked toward Caruso.

Dante’s voice erupted through the earpiece.

“Connor, stop.”

Connor kept moving.

Caruso smiled.

“There’s my boy.”

Maya’s stomach fell.

Connor stood beside him.

“You sold us out.”

His face looked empty.

“I’m sorry.”

“You keep saying that.”

Caruso took the ledger from Maya’s hand.

Connor did nothing.

Maya looked at him.

“All of this because you owed money?”

Connor’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then make me.”

He finally looked at her.

“They have my brother.”

Maya froze.

Connor’s younger brother, Jason.

She hadn’t seen him in years.

“He moved to Oregon.”

“No.”

Connor swallowed.

“He disappeared six months ago. Caruso’s people took him after I tried to stop working for them.”

Caruso rolled his eyes.

“Such drama.”

Connor’s hands curled.

Maya understood.

Not absolution.

Context.

Connor had made terrible choices long before anybody took Jason.

But he had not walked into this warehouse simply for money.

Caruso flipped through the copied ledger.

His smile disappeared.

“This is incomplete.”

Maya said nothing.

He looked up.

“Where is the original?”

“Safe.”

Caruso stepped toward her.

“You’re in no position to negotiate.”

Maya looked at Emma.

“Yes, I am.”

Caruso followed her gaze.

The threat was obvious.

Dante’s voice came through the earpiece, controlled and lethal.

“We move now.”

Marco whispered, “Wait.”

Maya heard them.

Caruso didn’t.

She needed time.

“Why did you kill my mother?”

Caruso’s expression barely changed.

“She stole from me.”

“No. She copied records.”

“She stole information.”

“That isn’t a death sentence.”

“In my world, it can be.”

Maya’s throat tightened.

“You caused the crash.”

Caruso smiled.

“I told a police lieutenant Evelyn had become a problem.”

“Name.”

“No.”

“You’re proud enough to admit murder but scared to name a cop?”

The smile vanished.

Good.

Maya kept pushing.

“Maybe my mother wasn’t the weak one.”

Caruso stepped closer.

Connor glanced at him.

“Maya.”

Warning.

She ignored him.

“Maybe you spent eight years terrified of a dead bookkeeper.”

Caruso struck the table beside her.

Emma screamed.

Dante said, “Move.”

Marco answered, “Not yet.”

Maya’s entire body wanted to run to Emma.

She stayed still.

Caruso leaned close.

“Your mother begged.”

Maya’s vision went white.

A lie.

Maybe.

She couldn’t know.

She refused to give him the reaction.

“No.”

“What?”

“She didn’t.”

“You weren’t there.”

“Neither were you.”

That caught him.

Maya saw it.

Caruso had ordered the death.

He hadn’t been present.

“You sent someone.”

Silence.

“Who?”

Caruso smiled coldly.

“Ask Dante’s father.”

Maya shook her head.

“Anthony was cooperating by then.”

His expression shifted.

Tiny.

Again.

“You didn’t know that either,” Maya said.

Caruso’s face hardened.

Behind the walls, Marco whispered, “She’s tearing him apart.”

Dante did not answer.

Maya continued.

“You thought Anthony betrayed you after my mother died.”

Caruso stared.

“You never knew when he started.”

Another pause.

Maya suddenly saw the structure.

Anthony Moretti.

Evelyn Bennett.

Samuel Pike.

Three people inside Caruso’s machine.

Maybe not working together at first.

Then slowly discovering one another.

“Anthony warned my mother.”

Caruso’s eyes narrowed.

There.

Maya knew.

“He tried to get her out.”

Caruso stepped forward.

Connor moved slightly between them.

“Vincent.”

Caruso looked at him.

Connor’s voice was low.

“You said no one gets hurt.”

Caruso laughed.

“You believed me?”

Connor went pale.

Caruso turned toward Emma.

“Bring the girl.”

A man appeared behind her.

Maya’s blood froze.

Emma began crying.

“No!”

Maya moved.

Caruso grabbed her arm.

That was the signal.

The warehouse lights died.

Chaos.

A crash from the east entrance.

Shouting.

Emma screamed.

Maya dropped to the floor exactly as Marco had instructed.

A hand grabbed Caruso.

Connor.

“Run!”

Maya ran toward Emma.

Emergency lights flashed red.

The man beside Emma reached for her.

Maya slammed the heavy ledger into his arm.

He staggered.

Emma ran.

Maya caught her.

“Come here!”

Emma wrapped around her.

“Maya!”

“I’ve got you.”

A gunshot sounded somewhere distant.

Not close.

Maya covered Emma’s head.

Dante appeared through the darkness.

“Emma!”

“Daddy!”

She broke from Maya and ran.

Dante dropped to his knees.

Emma crashed into him.

He wrapped both arms around her.

For several seconds, Dante Moretti did nothing but hold his daughter.

His face disappeared against her hair.

“I knew you’d come,” Emma cried.

Dante’s eyes closed.

“I’m sorry.”

“You came.”

“I’m sorry.”

Maya looked away.

Then remembered Connor.

She turned.

He was on the floor near the table.

Alive.

Bleeding from the shoulder.

Caruso was gone.

“Where?”

Connor grimaced.

“Back exit.”

Marco shouted into his radio.

“North team, intercept!”

Connor grabbed Maya’s wrist.

“Jason.”

“What?”

“Caruso keeps people at the river property.”

“Your brother?”

“I think so.”

Maya knelt.

“Stay awake.”

Connor laughed weakly.

“Now you care?”

“I don’t want Lily growing up knowing her father died before she decided whether he deserved another chance.”

His eyes filled.

That hurt him.

Good.

Maybe some pain was useful.

Police vehicles finally arrived.

Not ordinary local patrol.

Federal agents.

Dante had contacted them hours earlier using information from Anthony’s old case files.

Caruso was arrested six minutes later near the river.

He tried to escape in a maintenance truck.

He didn’t get far.

The bigger shock came after.

The corrupt police lieutenant Evelyn had feared was now Deputy Commissioner Raymond Sloan.

His name appeared in the recovered files.

Federal agents arrested him before dawn.

Samuel Pike testified forty-eight hours later.

He had been living under another identity in Vermont.

Anthony Moretti had arranged the relocation personally.

Pike confirmed everything.

Evelyn discovered Caruso’s shell payments.

Anthony tried to help her deliver the records safely.

Sloan intercepted the plan.

Caruso ordered Evelyn frightened into silence.

Sloan escalated.

He forced her vehicle from the road.

Then buried the traffic footage.

Anthony learned the truth afterward.

His cooperation intensified.

He died of cancer eighteen months later while still under federal protection.

Caruso had spent years believing Anthony hid the witness list.

Evelyn had actually hidden the final copy.

Maya sat beside Dante in a quiet federal office after the statements were complete.

Emma slept across two chairs with her head in his lap.

Maya watched him brush hair from his daughter’s forehead.

“I need to ask you something.”

Dante closed his eyes briefly.

“I know.”

“The street.”

He looked at her.

“Caruso said you knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt even though she expected it.

“How much?”

“Your name.”

“Why?”

“Marco found the storage trust three weeks before I met you.”

Maya stared.

“What?”

“It was connected indirectly to one of my father’s dormant accounts.”

“You investigated me.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Eleven days.”

“And then you happened to find me in the snow?”

“No.”

The word sliced.

Maya stood.

Dante continued.

“I knew you’d been evicted.”

“You were watching me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I had nowhere to go.”

“Not until that night.”

“But you followed me.”

“Yes.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

“That coat.”

He looked down.

“I would have given it to you if your name had been anything.”

“How am I supposed to know that?”

“You can’t.”

“You let me think you were a stranger.”

“I was a stranger.”

“You knew who my mother was.”

“I suspected a connection.”

“You used me.”

His face tightened.

“At first, I thought you might lead me to something my father left behind.”

There it was.

Ugly.

Real.

Maya’s eyes burned.

“And after?”

“After five minutes, I stopped caring about the files.”

“That’s convenient.”

“I know.”

“You gave me a hotel.”

“Because Lily was freezing.”

“You got me an interview.”

“You got yourself the job.”

“You put security around me.”

“Because Caruso photographed you.”

“You brought me into your house.”

Dante looked toward sleeping Emma.

“That was Emma.”

Despite herself, Maya almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she shook her head.

“I don’t know which parts were real.”

“All of them.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Repeatedly.”

“Yes.”

“Stop agreeing with me.”

“I don’t know what else you want.”

“The truth earlier.”

His face changed.

“I was afraid you would leave.”

Maya stared.

Dante continued.

“And I was right.”

She picked up her coat.

He didn’t stop her.

That mattered.

At the door, Maya turned.

“Emma needs you.”

“I know.”

“Lily needs me.”

“Yes.”

“And I need to figure out who I am when I’m not surviving you, Connor, Caruso or my mother’s secrets.”

Dante looked like he wanted to say something.

He didn’t.

Maya opened the door.

“Maya.”

She stopped.

Dante’s voice was quiet.

“I’m sorry the first kindness I gave you had a lie behind it.”

Her eyes filled.

He continued.

“But the kindness wasn’t the lie.”

Maya left.

May you like

For the first time since that snowy night, Dante did not follow.
