Chapter 6 - What Money Could Never Buy

Adrian didn't sleep.

Neither did Marin.

But this time, nobody disappeared.

Nobody made decisions for somebody else.

They worked together.

Eric remembered Anthony mentioning an old Vale property north of the city.

Luca found vehicle records.

Marin remembered something more important.

The photograph of Ivy had been taken from across the street from her school.

Behind Ivy was a bakery window.

Its reflection showed the photographer's car.

A dark sedan.

Partial license plate.

Luca stared at Marin.

"How did you see that?"

"I've spent ten years remembering what people order while six tables talk at once."

Adrian smiled.

"Never underestimate a waitress."

They found Anthony before he ever reached Ivy.

There was no dramatic battle.

No alley confrontation.

No gunfire.

Adrian chose something Anthony never expected.

Evidence.

Police.

Federal investigators.

Witnesses.

Eric testified.

Financial records connected Anthony to Soren.

The empire Anthony believed Adrian would protect became the evidence that destroyed him.

Before authorities took him away, Anthony looked at Adrian.

"For a waitress?"

Adrian's expression remained calm.

"No."

He looked toward Marin.

"For a life."

Weeks passed.

Then months.

Eric slowly rebuilt his relationship with Ivy.

It wasn't magical.

It wasn't instant.

Ivy had questions.

Eric had apologies.

Marin had anger that sometimes returned without warning.

But they tried.

Adrian did something harder.

He changed.

Vale Holdings became legitimate under independent oversight.

Businesses connected to criminal activity were sold or closed.

Hundreds of legitimate employees kept their jobs.

Adrian kept considerably less money.

He seemed considerably happier.

And every Saturday morning, he came to Earl's Diner.

Same booth.

Same coffee.

Marin pretended to be annoyed.

Ivy didn't bother pretending.

She adored him.

One Saturday, Adrian arrived carrying a box.

Marin narrowed her eyes.

"If that's another refrigerator—"

"It's not."

"Car?"

"No."

"Apartment?"

"No."

"Jewelry?"

"Marin."

"What?"

"Open it."

Inside were black work shoes.

Good ones.

Comfortable.

Marin stared.

Adrian suddenly looked nervous.

"I noticed yours were falling apart the night we met."

She looked up.

"You remembered my shoes?"

"I remember everything about that night."

Her expression softened.

"That's annoyingly sweet."

"I have other qualities."

"I've heard rumors."

He smiled.

Then Ivy appeared.

"Are you guys in love yet?"

Marin nearly dropped the box.

"Ivy!"

"What?"

Adrian coughed into his coffee.

Ivy looked between them.

"Mrs. Alvarez says everybody knows."

"Mrs. Alvarez needs hobbies."

"She has hobbies. You're one of them."

Adrian laughed so hard several customers turned around.

Marin covered her face.

That evening, Adrian walked them home.

At the apartment entrance, Ivy ran upstairs.

Marin remained outside.

Rain had begun falling.

Softly this time.

Adrian looked upward.

"Seems familiar."

"Better circumstances."

"Much."

Marin stepped closer.

"Why did you really come back the next morning?"

Adrian considered lying.

Then didn't.

"Because you didn't take the money."

Marin smiled.

"That's romantic."

"I wasn't finished."

He took her hand.

"Everyone I'd known wanted something from Adrian Vale. Money. Influence. Fear. Protection."

His thumb moved across her fingers.

"You saw me when I had nothing to offer."

"Technically, you had eight thousand four hundred dollars."

He laughed.

"You know what I mean."

"I do."

"You stayed."

Marin looked at him.

"So did you."

Adrian leaned closer.

Their kiss was quiet.

No grand audience.

No expensive restaurant.

No photographers.

Just rain.

The same rain that had once placed a frightened waitress and a wounded stranger in the same alley.

Upstairs, the curtain moved.

Ivy's face appeared.

Then Mrs. Alvarez's.

Marin pulled away.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."

Adrian looked upward.

Ivy gave him two enthusiastic thumbs up.

And for once, Adrian Vale didn't care who was watching.

But the story wasn't finished.

Because the following morning, Eric arrived carrying a sealed envelope he had kept hidden for five years.

It contained a document concerning Ivy.

And when Marin read the first line, she realized Adrian's connection to her family had begun long before the night they met.
