Chapter 4 - Blood Behind the Business Empire

The answer arrived inside a locked storage box.
Three days later Dominic brought Norah into an underground archive beneath Russo Tower.
Steel shelves stretched endlessly through climate-controlled darkness.
Thousands of records.
Old photographs.
Financial ledgers.
Names erased from history.
Dominic unlocked one cabinet using a biometric scanner.
Inside rested a weathered evidence box marked:
HAYES, THOMAS — DETROIT INCIDENT
Norah’s hands trembled as she opened it.
Letters.
Police reports.
A broken wristwatch.
And a cassette tape.
Dominic placed an old recorder on the desk.
“You should hear this.”
Static filled the room.
Then her father’s voice.
Young.
Warm.
Alive.
“If anything happens to me, Elena…”
Norah covered her mouth.
Her mother’s name.
“…take Norah somewhere they’ll never find her. Russo’s son isn’t his father. He tried to save me tonight. If Dominic survives, trust him.”
The tape ended.
Norah cried silently.
Dominic stood beside her without touching her.
He understood some grief belonged to the person carrying it.
Inside the box they discovered another item.
A photograph.
Caleb’s father standing beside Thomas Hayes.
Norah stared.
“Pierce?”
Dominic nodded.
“Caleb’s father was one of the federal accountants investigating Salerno.”
Suddenly everything connected.
The Pierce family wasn’t random.
They were connected to Detroit too.
Dominic explained that both fathers had secretly cooperated before someone betrayed them.
Thomas died.
Caleb’s father disappeared.
Victor Salerno built his empire afterward.
Caleb grew up believing Russo destroyed his family.
Someone had fed him lies for decades.
That didn’t excuse what he became.
But it explained his obsession.
Meanwhile surveillance revealed Salerno preparing a massive merger designed to absorb Russo Logistics through corporate warfare.
Not bullets.
Contracts.
Banks.
Shell corporations.
Caleb possessed insider access through Norah’s old relationship and intended to manipulate her emotions into obtaining confidential information.
Dominic called an emergency meeting.
Norah surprised everyone.
“I want to help.”
“No.”
Dominic answered immediately.
She folded her arms.
“You hired me for my intelligence.”
“I hired you to organize business.”
“And I organized enough business to know Caleb’s habits.”
He stared.
She continued.
“He never improvises. He always believes people underestimate him. Let me predict him.”
The room fell quiet.
Finally Dominic nodded.
“Under one condition.”
“What?”
“You never meet him alone.”
Deal.
The trap began.
Norah intentionally allowed Caleb to believe she was angry with Dominic.
She stopped smiling around the office.
Left meetings early.
Allowed surveillance cameras to capture staged disagreements.
Caleb took the bait quickly.
He invited her to dinner.
She accepted.
Dominic hated every second.
Inside a crowded restaurant Caleb reached across the table.
“You don’t belong with him.”
Norah maintained trembling perfection.
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes, I do.”
“He scares me.”
Caleb smiled knowingly.
Exactly what she wanted.
He leaned closer.
“Then help me expose him.”
“What do you need?”
He whispered.
“His Detroit files.”
Norah nearly reacted.
Instead she lowered her eyes.
“There’s one problem.”
“What?”
“Dominic keeps them beneath the tower.”
Caleb believed her instantly.
Because arrogance always loved convenient answers.
Across the restaurant Dominic watched through hidden surveillance.
His fists tightened beneath the table in the neighboring room.
Caleb smiled.
“Tomorrow night.”
He slipped a small key toward her.
“Bring the files.”
Norah picked it up.
The moment Caleb left, her expression disappeared.
She returned to Dominic’s vehicle.
Inside the black sedan silence filled the air.
Finally Dominic spoke.
“You did well.”
She looked outside.
“You looked ready to kill him.”
“I was considering it.”
She laughed unexpectedly.
The tension broke for one precious moment.
Then Dominic gently reached over and took the key from her hand.
Their fingers touched.
Neither pulled away immediately.
For a heartbeat the mafia boss and the secretary forgot the war surrounding them.
Until Dominic received a phone call.
His expression hardened.
“What?”
A voice spoke urgently.
Norah watched color leave his face.
“Who’s dead?”
He listened.
Then ended the call.
“Your mother.”
Norah’s heart stopped.
May you like
Dominic whispered the impossible.
“She’s alive.”
