Chapter 18 - The Twenty-Sixth Camera

There had always been one mystery left.
Camera 26.
I had forgotten about it.
During the original installation, twenty-five cameras were connected to the central security network.
The twenty-sixth was a backup unit inside Aurelia's music room.
It had failed before the night everything happened.
Or so we believed.
Years later, while preparing the mansion for conversion into the research center, Samuel found its internal memory.
"Dad."
"What?"
"You should see this."
The footage dated back to Aurelia's final week at home.
No crime.
No Clara tampering with medication.
No conspiracy.
Something far more valuable.
Aurelia.
Alive.
She entered the music room alone.
Pregnant.
Tired.
She sat beside the cello.
Then she looked directly toward Camera 26.
Apparently she knew it existed.
She smiled.
"Damian installed another security upgrade today."
I laughed.
Of course.
"He thinks cameras make him feel safe."
Lina looked at me.
I ignored her.
Onscreen, Aurelia continued.
"But safety isn't knowing everything that might happen."
Her hand rested on her stomach.
"It's knowing who will stand beside you when it does."
Then she played.
For eleven minutes.
A composition none of us recognized.
Mateo leaned closer.
"I've never heard this."
Neither had I.
At the end, Aurelia whispered:
"For Mateo and Samuel."
The lost composition.
Twenty-five years later, we had found it.
Mateo spent months reconstructing the music.
The recording quality was imperfect.
Some notes were difficult to distinguish.
He refused to guess.
He studied Aurelia's manuscripts.
Compared harmonic patterns.
Worked with musicians who had known her.
Finally, the piece was completed.
He titled it The Next Note.
The premiere took place at the foundation's anniversary gala.
Mateo played Aurelia's cello.
A full orchestra accompanied him.
Samuel sat beside me.
Lina held my hand.
Behind the stage was a single image.
Aurelia smiling.
Not Aurelia in the hospital.
Not Aurelia as a tragedy.
Aurelia laughing during a rehearsal twenty-six years earlier.
The music began.
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had imagined that healing would mean thinking about Aurelia less.
I had been wrong.
Healing meant remembering without collapsing.
Remembering without demanding the past return.
Remembering and still choosing tomorrow.
When the final note faded, nobody moved for several seconds.
Then the audience rose.
Mateo looked toward us.
Samuel wiped his eyes and pretended he hadn't.
Lina leaned close.
"She'd love this."
"Yeah."
"And she'd make fun of you for crying."
"I'm not crying."
"Of course."
Afterward, we returned to the cottage.
Our sons stayed late.
No press.
No donors.
No board members.
Just family.
Mateo cooked.
Badly.
Apparently that was hereditary from me.
Samuel complained.
Lina rescued dinner.
Some things never changed.
Later, we walked to the lake.
I was sixty-eight.
Lina's hair had silver in it.
She was still the strongest person I knew.
"Do you remember the first time we sat here?" I asked.
"After you nearly destroyed dinner?"
"Which time?"
"Fair."
We laughed.
Then she said:
"You know, I almost quit."
"When?"
"The week before you installed the cameras."
I stopped.
"Why?"
"Clara was making everything unbearable."
"What changed your mind?"
"Mateo."
She looked across the water.
"He grabbed my finger."
Exactly as he had grabbed mine later.
"And I thought, one more night."
One more night.
That was all.
She didn't know she would save him.
She didn't know I would watch the footage.
She didn't know we would marry.
She didn't know the foundation would exist.
She simply chose one more night.
I squeezed her hand.
Sometimes lives changed through enormous decisions.
Sometimes through one exhausted person deciding not to leave.
Then Lina smiled.
"Want to know something else?"
"What?"
"I knew about Camera 11."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"Not immediately. I spotted it after three days."
"You never told me."
"I figured if you wanted to waste a hundred thousand dollars watching me change diapers, that was your problem."
I laughed so loudly birds flew from the trees.
After all those years, Lina still had secrets.
But there was one chapter left.
May you like
One final chapter.
And it began when Mateo and Samuel asked us to return to the nursery where everything had started.
