Chapter 14 - The Sister I Never Really Knew

Madison changed slowly.
That made me trust it more.
Real transformation is boring.
No speeches.
No dramatic music.
Just different choices repeated long enough to become character.
She worked.
Paid rent.
Learned budgets.
Told her children the truth in age-appropriate pieces.
When they asked why their father lived somewhere else, she didn’t make Tyler a monster.
“He made choices that hurt people, and adults have consequences too.”
I respected that.
One night she called me.
“I got promoted.”
I smiled.
“To what?”
“Full-time operations coordinator.”
“Congratulations.”
“My salary is terrible.”
I laughed.
“Welcome to employment.”
She laughed too.
Then became quiet.
“I paid off my credit card today.”
That sentence meant more than any promotion.
“I’m proud of you.”
She started crying.

This time, her tears did not ask me for anything.
And I realized I no longer resented them.
