Chương 18 - The Door Opens Again

Their wedding was deliberately small.

No business magazines.

No corporate spectacle.

Marcus attended.

Adrian attended.

Fiona wore a white sparkly dress and took her responsibilities as flower girl more seriously than Jessi took most board meetings.

Before the ceremony, Jessi stood alone.

Her gown left part of her back visible.

For years she would never have allowed that.

The scars could be seen.

She didn't hide them.

Ivan found her near the window.

“You're not supposed to see me.”

“We've never been good with doors.”

She smiled.

“True.”

He looked at her.

“You okay?”

“Nervous.”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“Means you're human.”

“Debatable.”

Fiona appeared.

“Stop talking! You're ruining the schedule.”

Ivan raised both hands.

“Yes, boss.”

The ceremony began.

When Jessi walked toward him, Ivan remembered their first meeting.

The terrified woman near the window.

The threat.

The briefcase.

The impossible offer.

He remembered Laura.

He would always love her.

Moving forward didn't erase the life that came before.

It honored it.

During the vows, Jessi looked at Fiona.

“I spent most of my life thinking family was something you inherited,” she said. “Then the two of you taught me that sometimes family is something you choose.”

Fiona cried.

Ivan cried.

Marcus pretended not to.

Afterward, Fiona whispered to Jessi, “Can I call you Mom?”

Jessi froze.

She crouched carefully.

“You can call me anything that feels right.”

Fiona hugged her.

“Mom.”

Jessi closed her eyes.

Ivan turned away for a moment because there were some emotions too large to survive while pretending to be tough.

That evening, long after the guests left, Ivan received a message.

The Laura Mercer Foundation had approved its ten-thousandth child for medical assistance.

He showed Jessi.

She squeezed his hand.

“Ten thousand.”

Ivan nodded.

“Laura would've liked that.”

“Yes.”

They stood silently beneath the lights.

Their story could have ended there.

But the following morning, Fiona found something stored in the back of Ivan's closet.

The original black briefcase.

She dragged it into the kitchen.

“What's this?”

Ivan and Jessi exchanged looks.

May you like

Then they laughed.

Because it was finally time to tell Fiona how the strangest offer of their lives had created the family standing in that kitchen.
