Chapter 6 - The Trap Inside the Trap

Vincent’s secret was not what anyone expected.
Dante’s mother had discovered his father was hiding millions overseas.
Not stolen money.
Protection money.
Funds intended to keep the family secure if Moretti Holdings collapsed.
She had asked Vincent to hide copies of the records.
Samuel Price had drafted the original trusts.
Over decades, Samuel became the only person who understood every weakness inside the family’s corporate structure.
When Dante took control after his father’s death, Samuel expected influence.
Instead Dante centralized the company, audited old accounts and closed questionable operations.
Samuel lost access.
Then Dante began discussing replacing him.
“That gave him motive,” Amelia said.
“Not enough,” Dante replied.
Vincent nodded.
“There’s more.”
Samuel had quietly invested family trust money into failing companies.
If Dante discovered the losses, Samuel would face prison.
So he built an alternative.
Remove Dante.
Control the temporary trusteeship.
Use Moretti assets to cover the missing money.
Julian’s debts made him an ideal scapegoat.
Marco’s nephew created leverage.
Raymond’s access provided operational control.
And Vincent’s old Aster company provided the perfect fictional criminal network.
But one problem remained.
“Samuel is on a plane,” Marco said.
“No,” Amelia replied.
Everyone looked at her.
She had checked the flight manifest again.
Samuel’s alias had boarded.
But the airport camera only showed him entering the jet bridge.
No footage confirmed he entered the aircraft.
His passport appeared in Switzerland because someone else carried it through automated control.
Samuel wanted them to believe he had fled.
“He’s still here,” she said.
Dante immediately understood.
“Why?”
“Because the plan isn’t finished.”
They gave Samuel what he needed.
A public collapse.
Moretti Holdings announced that Dante was temporarily stepping down due to health concerns and an internal investigation.
Privately, they leaked three different locations where Dante supposedly kept the original Aster records.
One location went to Raymond.
One to Vincent.
One through a communication channel only Samuel could access.
Then they waited.
The third location was an abandoned Moretti archive building.
At 11:43 p.m., movement sensors activated.
Samuel had taken the bait.
But he wasn’t alone.
Raymond was with him.
---
Dante insisted on going.
Amelia insisted harder.
“You are not coming.”
“That’s adorable.”
“This is not your job.”
“You told me to find out.”
“I’m withdrawing the instruction.”
“No.”
Dante stared at her.
“You’ve become very comfortable with that word.”
“You gave me practice.”
He rolled closer.
“This is different.”
“Because it’s dangerous?”
“Yes.”
“The first day involved a sniper.”
“And I’ve regretted allowing you to stay every day since.”
Something in his voice changed.
Amelia stopped.
“Why?”
Dante looked at her.
Because now he had something to lose.
He didn’t say it.
He didn’t need to.
Amelia crouched in front of him.
“You don’t get to protect me by removing my choices.”
His jaw tightened.
“You could die.”
“So could you.”
“That is different.”
“No.”
She placed her hand over his.
“You once asked why I wouldn’t accept your money.”
He remained silent.
“Because I thought accepting help meant surrendering control.”
She breathed slowly.
“You think loving someone means taking control so nothing can happen to them.”
His eyes met hers.
Neither moved.
“That isn’t love, Dante.”
The word hung between them.
Neither had used it before.
Amelia continued softly.
“Trust me enough to let me choose.”
For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Dante Moretti surrendered control deliberately.
“All right.”
Amelia smiled.
“All right?”
“Don’t make me repeat it.”
“I may record this date.”
He caught her hand before she stood.
“Amelia.”
“Yes?”
“If anything happens—”
“It won’t.”
“You can’t promise that.”
“No.”
She squeezed his hand.
“But neither can you.”
Then Lily appeared in the doorway wearing pajamas.
“You’re leaving.”
Amelia turned.
“Sweetheart—”
Lily walked toward Dante.
She placed something on his wheelchair.
A small bicycle horn.
Marco turned away to hide his smile.
“I told you,” Lily said. “You needed one.”
Dante stared at it.
Then at Amelia.
“I blame you.”
“I had nothing to do with this.”
Lily hugged her mother.
Then, unexpectedly, she hugged Dante.
He froze.
Slowly, awkwardly, his arm came around her.
“Come back,” Lily said.
Dante’s expression softened.
“We will.”
Not I.
We.
Amelia heard it.
---
The archive building was supposed to be empty.
It wasn’t.
Samuel had anticipated the trap.
Again.
When Dante, Amelia and Marco entered, emergency shutters slammed behind them.
Lights died.
A voice came through the building speakers.
“Dante.”
Samuel.
“You always were predictable.”
Dante looked at Amelia.
She whispered, “He thinks you are.”
Samuel continued.
“You protect people. That’s your weakness.”
“No,” Amelia whispered.
“That’s what he wants Dante to believe.”
Marco checked the exits.
Locked.
Then Raymond appeared on the upper walkway.
Gun in hand.
He looked terrible.
Terrified.
“Samuel,” Raymond shouted. “You said nobody else would get hurt.”
Samuel’s voice answered.
“You believed many things.”
Raymond looked down at Dante.
“I’m sorry.”
Marco raised his weapon.
“You sold us out.”
“They had my daughter.”
There it was again.
Leverage.
Samuel had built his empire using the same method repeatedly.
Find what someone loved.
Threaten it.
Control them.
Dante looked at Raymond.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Amelia saw something behind Raymond.
A blinking light.
Security panel.
The same model used in Dante’s residence.
Then she understood.
This building wasn’t merely an archive.
It had once been an emergency command center.
Dante’s father had built it.
Which meant—
“Dante,” she whispered. “Can you control the shutters from your chair?”
He looked at her.
His wheelchair had been upgraded with secure Moretti systems after the bombing.
Including emergency building access.
A faint smile appeared.
Samuel believed Dante’s wheelchair made him predictable.
He had forgotten it was also connected to half the buildings the Moretti family owned.
Dante opened the hidden control application.
Samuel’s voice continued.
“You should have stayed broken after the bomb.”
Dante stopped.
Amelia looked at him.
There.
Confirmation.
Samuel had just admitted involvement in the attack six years earlier.
And Marco’s body camera had recorded every word.
Dante tapped the screen.
Nothing happened.
Samuel laughed.
“You think I forgot your access?”
He had disabled it.
The trap had turned again.
Then Amelia noticed the bicycle horn Lily had attached to Dante’s chair.
Beside it was the manual emergency switch controlling the wheelchair’s auxiliary radio.
Not the corporate network.
Independent hardware.
She looked at Marco.
“Your radios.”
“Jammed.”
“Not all frequencies.”
Understanding flashed across his face.
Marco switched to the emergency analog channel.
Signal.
Weak.
But alive.
He transmitted three words.
“Move. Now. East.”
Outside, the security team received it.
Samuel realized too late.
The building erupted with movement.
Raymond dropped his gun.
Emergency shutters began opening.
And from the darkness behind them came Samuel Price’s real voice.
Not through the speakers.
Close.
Very close.
“You should have taken the money, Amelia.”
She turned.
Samuel stood ten feet away.
May you like
And the weapon in his hand was pointed directly at Dante.
