Chapter 12 - The Secret Hidden Inside the Silver Locket

The encrypted file required a password.
We tried everything.
Marisol.
Gabriel.
Leo.
Valdez.
Orelio.
Nothing.
Then Dominic looked at my necklace.
“The locket.”
I touched it.
“What about it?”
“Elena built the compartment to respond to it.”
I removed the necklace.
Inside the locket's hinge was a string of tiny engraved numbers.
I had never noticed them.
We entered them.
The file opened.
A video appeared.
Elena sat in the same office we had searched days earlier.
She smiled.
“Hi, Elina.”
I covered my mouth.
Dominic stepped back.
This message was mine.
“I don't know when you'll see this,” Elena said. “Maybe I'll be sitting beside you, laughing because I made everything more dramatic than necessary.”
She paused.
“Dominic would say that's impossible.”
I laughed through tears.
“So would I,” Dominic murmured.
Elena continued.
“But if I'm not there, I need you to know something.”
She described the locket.
It had belonged to Marisol's mother.
There were two originally.
One for each twin.
Elena's had been taken when she was adopted.
Years later, her adoptive father had returned it to her.
I stared.
“You have it?”
Dominic nodded slowly.
He left the room.
When he returned, he carried a jewelry box.
Inside lay an identical silver locket.
My sister's.
Dominic placed it beside mine.
The two lockets fit together.
Literally.
Their edges formed a single oval medallion.
When connected, a hidden panel opened.
Inside was a tiny photograph.
Marisol.
Gabriel.
Two little girls.
A complete family.
I couldn't breathe.
Elena's video continued.
“I used to think finding you would give me back the childhood we lost.”
She smiled sadly.
“It won't.”
My tears fell.
“But maybe it can give us something else.”
She leaned toward the camera.
“A choice.”
“People have been choosing for us since we were children. Carlo chose secrecy. Marco chose power. Mom chose survival. Even I chose to investigate without telling anyone.”
Her expression softened.
“So if you're watching this, Elina, don't let anyone choose what your life becomes next.”
I looked at Dominic.
He was staring at Elena.
Grief and love moved across his face.
Then Elena said something I never expected.
“And Dominic…”
He looked up.
“If you're standing behind her pretending this message isn't for you, stop being annoying.”
I laughed.
Dominic actually smiled.
Elena continued.
“Don't turn Elina into me.”
His smile disappeared.
“She may look like me. She may share my voice, my terrible taste in olives, and apparently our mother's habit of arguing with people twice our size.”
I looked at Dominic.
He almost laughed.
“But she is not your second chance with me.”
The room became painfully still.
“She is her own person.”
Dominic looked at me.
“And Elina, he is not the man people whisper about when he walks into restaurants.”
Her smile grew.
“He is also that man. Unfortunately.”
I laughed again.
“But underneath all of that, he's just someone who loves too fiercely and forgives himself too slowly.”
Dominic looked away.
Elena's final words were simple.
“Take care of Leo.”
My heart broke.
“Not because you owe me.”
She touched the camera.
“Because I hope when he meets you, he'll know you somehow.”
I sobbed then.
Dominic sat beside me.
“He did,” I whispered.
“Yes.”
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
The video ended.
For several minutes neither of us spoke.
Then Dominic said, “She planned everything.”
“Except dying.”
His face tightened.
“No.”
I touched his hand.
“Dominic.”
He looked at me.
“You didn't fail her.”
His eyes filled.
“You don't know that.”
“She literally made a video telling you not to blame yourself.”
“I ignored signs.”
“You loved her. That isn't the same as being able to save her from everything.”
He looked toward the screen.
“I'm tired.”
It was the most vulnerable thing he had said.
“Then stop carrying everyone.”
“I don't know how.”
“Learn.”
He gave a small, humorless laugh.
“You make that sound simple.”
“It isn't.”
I looked at our joined lockets.
“But complicated doesn't mean impossible.”
Over the next several weeks, Marco's network collapsed.
Investigators arrested several people.
Daniel cooperated.
Rafael was cleared of wrongdoing, though Dominic informed him that hiding information from him again would result in retirement.
Rafael replied, “That sounds peaceful.”
Marisol returned to the city.
Not to live with me.
Not immediately.
We were rebuilding something too damaged to rush.
I returned to Orelio.
Victor acted as though nothing had happened.
“You're late.”
“My mother returned from the dead.”
“Seven minutes, Elina.”
Normality felt wonderful.
The portrait of Elena was restored.
Beside it, Victor hung a photograph of Gabriel.
I objected.
“It makes this place look like a museum.”
Victor shrugged.
“Customers love mysteries.”
Then one evening, Dominic arrived.
No bodyguards inside.
No dramatic silence.
Just Dominic.
And Leo.
The restaurant still became quiet.
Some things didn't change that quickly.
Leo saw me.
“El!”
I smiled.
“Hey, troublemaker.”
Dominic approached.
“He insisted.”
“He's one.”
“He's persuasive.”
Leo reached.
I took him.
Then Dominic handed me an envelope.
“What is this?”
“Elena's final legal documents.”
My smile faded.
“She changed something in her will shortly before she died.”
“What?”
Dominic watched me carefully.
“If anything happened to her and if you were ever found, she wanted you named as Leo's secondary guardian.”
I stared at him.
“She had never met me.”
“She believed she knew enough.”
My hands shook.
“And you?”
“What about me?”
“Do you agree?”
Dominic looked at Leo in my arms.
Then at me.
“Yes.”
One word.
But it carried everything.
Trust.
Family.
A future.
I looked at Elena's portrait behind the bar.
For the first time, seeing her face didn't feel like looking into a haunted mirror.
It felt like seeing my sister.
May you like
And somewhere inside me, something that had been broken before I could even remember finally began to heal.
