Chapter 4 - The Letter Richard Never Wanted Them to Read

Lucas returned to New York the next morning.
The experiment no longer mattered.
His father did.
Emily had not answered any of his calls.
He didn’t blame her.
The headlines had become vicious overnight.
BILLIONAIRE HEIR’S SECRET LOVE TEST EXPOSED
RICH BOY PLAYS POOR
WAS EMILY HARRISON AN UNWITTING PARTICIPANT?
Lucas refused every interview.
Richard was sitting up in his hospital bed when Lucas entered.
“You look terrible,” his father said.
Lucas stared at him.
“You had a heart attack and that’s your opening line?”
“A mild cardiac event.”
“You collapsed.”
Richard shrugged.
“I’ve done more embarrassing things.”
Lucas hugged him.
Richard stopped joking.
For several seconds, father and son said nothing.
Then Richard whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“This was my idea.”
Lucas stepped back.
“My choices were mine.”
“Emily?”
“She hates me.”
“She doesn’t hate you.”
“You haven’t seen her.”
“No. But love doesn’t disappear in twelve hours.”
“Trust can.”
Richard looked toward the window.
“Yes.”
Lucas sat.
“The envelope is gone.”
Richard turned sharply.
“What?”
“Someone broke into my apartment.”
For the first time since Lucas entered, genuine fear appeared on Richard’s face.
“What was in it?”
Richard didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
“It wasn’t supposed to be opened unless you were desperate.”
“Why?”
Richard stared at him.
“Because it contained something that could destroy two families.”
Lucas stood.
“What are you talking about?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Call Charles Harrison.”
Lucas’s anger rose.
“Why?”
“Because the secret belongs to him too.”
Lucas stared at his father.
“Emily?”
Richard said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Meanwhile, Daniel had already read the letter.
He sat inside his penthouse with the pages spread across a table.
Richard’s handwriting began:
Lucas, if you are reading this, then something has gone wrong badly enough that the truth may be your only protection. Twenty-six years ago, Charles Harrison came to me asking for help. His wife, Margaret, had received a diagnosis that made pregnancy dangerous. Yet months later, she became pregnant. Charles believed the child was his. For years, so did everyone else.
Daniel frowned and continued.
What Charles did not learn until after Margaret’s death was that she had undergone fertility treatment without telling him the full circumstances. A clinic error had occurred. Genetic material from another patient had been used. The hospital buried the mistake after a private settlement.
Daniel sat back.
The revelation wasn’t what he had expected.
He read on.
Emily is Charles Harrison’s daughter in every way that matters. He raised her, loved her, protected her, and never wanted biology to alter that truth. But legal documents connected to the old settlement still exist. If someone ever uses those records against the Harrison family, contact attorney Rebecca Sloan. The attached photograph identifies the three people who knew enough to verify what happened.
Daniel reread the letter.
The mystery was not that Emily was Richard’s daughter.
Richard had simply helped Charles protect an old medical secret because Montgomery legal counsel had handled the hospital’s liability case decades earlier.
But Daniel saw opportunity.
If the story leaked selectively, it could devastate Emily.
More importantly, Charles Harrison’s estate documents contained inheritance terms that Daniel knew well.
He had once expected to marry Emily.
He had learned everything.
Daniel called his father.
Stephen Prescott answered.
“You shouldn’t be calling me about this.”
“I found Richard’s envelope.”
Silence.
Stephen lowered his voice.
“You stole it?”
“Borrowed.”
“You idiot.”
“It proves Emily isn’t biologically a Harrison.”
“It proves nothing useful to you.”
Daniel smiled.
“I disagree.”
“Destroy it.”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“If Charles’s board believes Emily’s inheritance could be challenged—”
“It cannot.”
“Public perception doesn’t require legal accuracy.”
Stephen swore.
“You’ve already done enough with the reporters.”
Daniel paused.
“So you know.”
“I know you exposed Lucas.”
“And now I can expose Emily.”
Stephen’s voice turned cold.
“You will do no such thing.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret Harrison’s clinic case involved more than a mistake.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
His father hung up.
Daniel stared at his phone.
Then at the letter.
There was more.
Back in New York, Charles arrived at Richard’s hospital room with Emily.
Lucas stood when he saw her.
She avoided his eyes.
Charles shut the door.
Richard looked at Emily.
“I owe you an apology.”
Emily’s voice was flat.
“Apparently everyone does.”
Lucas flinched.
Richard didn’t defend himself.
“You’re right.”
Charles sat beside her.
“Emily, the stolen envelope contains information about our family.”
She turned.
“What information?”
Charles looked afraid.
Emily had never seen her father afraid.
“About your mother.”
The anger in her face shifted.
“What about Mom?”
Charles swallowed.
“You know she underwent fertility treatment before you were born.”
“Yes.”
“What you don’t know is that the clinic made an error.”
Emily stared at him.
“What kind of error?”
Charles explained.
Slowly.
Carefully.
When he finished, Emily looked as if the room had tilted.
“So I’m not biologically yours.”
Charles immediately moved closer.
“You are my daughter.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“I don’t know whose genetic material was used.”
Emily stood.
Her hands shook.
“You knew?”
“Not until after your mother died.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That you would hear the word biology and think it changed twenty-six years of being my little girl.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
Charles’s voice broke.
“I was there when you were born. I held you before your mother did because she was hemorrhaging. I walked the hallway with you every night for six months because you refused to sleep. I taught you to ride a bicycle. I sat outside your room after Daniel broke your heart because you wouldn’t let me in.”
Tears ran down his face.
“I don’t care whose DNA is in your blood. You are mine.”
Emily began crying.
Charles pulled her into his arms.
Lucas looked away.
Richard did too.
After several minutes, Emily whispered, “Why was Lucas carrying this?”
Richard answered.
“Because the clinic was connected to a company Montgomery Global later acquired. If the old case resurfaced while Lucas was away, he needed enough information to protect both families.”
Emily turned toward Lucas.
“So you didn’t know.”
“No.”
“Not this?”
“No.”
She nodded.
It did not repair their relationship.
But something softened.
Lucas said, “Emily, I’m sorry.”
She looked at him.
“I believe you.”
Hope flickered.
Then she continued.
“But I’m still angry.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to decide whether someone deserves the truth based on whether you’re afraid they’ll leave.”
Lucas swallowed.
“I know.”
Richard stared at his son as if the lesson hurt him too.
Emily stepped toward the door.
“I need air.”
Lucas followed her into the hallway but kept his distance.
“Can I walk with you?”
She considered.
“Only if you don’t try to fix this.”
He nodded.
“I won’t.”
They walked through the hospital corridors.
For ten minutes, they said nothing.
Finally Emily asked, “Were any of it real?”
Lucas stopped.
“All of it.”
“The diner?”
“Yes.”
“The broken truck?”
“Unfortunately.”
She almost smiled.
“Walter?”
“He genuinely hates the coffee machine.”
A tiny laugh escaped her.
Then she caught herself.
Lucas looked at her.
“I fell in love with you before I admitted it to myself.”
Emily’s breath caught.
He continued.
“I didn’t tell you because I was afraid the second you knew, I would become Lucas Montgomery instead of Lucas.”
“You didn’t give me the chance to prove otherwise.”
“I know.”
She looked down.
“I love the man who fixed my refrigerator.”
Lucas’s eyes closed briefly.
“But I don’t know the man who hid an empire.”
“Then let me introduce you to him.”
Emily looked at him.
“Slowly.”
“However slowly you need.”
Before she could respond, Charles came running down the hallway.
His face was pale.
“Emily.”
“What happened?”
Charles held out his phone.
A breaking-news alert was spreading.
HARRISON HEIRESS’S PATERNITY SECRET—IS EMILY HARRISON REALLY A HARRISON?
Emily froze.
Lucas grabbed the phone.
The article referenced “private medical records.”
Richard’s envelope had not contained medical records.
Only the letter.
Lucas looked at Charles.
“Whoever leaked this had access to more than the envelope.”
Charles went still.
His phone rang.
He answered.
A board member was shouting loud enough for Lucas to hear.
Charles ended the call.
“What?”
Emily asked.
Charles stared at her.
“Someone also sent documents claiming you have no legal right to the Harrison family trust.”
Emily’s face drained.
“That’s impossible.”
“It is.”
“Then why?”
Charles looked at Lucas.
“Because whoever did this isn’t trying to reveal the truth.”
Lucas’s expression hardened.
“They’re trying to destroy Emily.”
Across Manhattan, Daniel received a text from his father.
Stop immediately. You do not understand what you found.
Daniel smiled and typed:
Then explain it.
The answer came thirty seconds later.
Because the clinic did not make an accidental donor swap. Someone paid for it.
Daniel’s smile vanished.
A second message appeared.
And I know who.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then his father sent one final sentence.
May you like
It was your mother.
