Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Never Left

The storm killed the main power at 4:12 p.m.

The backup generators failed thirty seconds later.

That wasn't weather.

Adrian knew because Vale House had three independent power systems.

Someone had disabled all of them.

Emergency lights turned the corridors red.

Daniel regained command only because Adrian had no better option.

“Lock the external doors.”

“Already done.”

“Find the source of that transmission.”

“Trying.”

Elena stood beside Adrian.

“You heard her.”

“Yes.”

“That was your mother.”

“I know.”

“She's alive.”

“I know.”

He sounded angry.

Elena understood why.

Hope could hurt worse than grief.

The intercom activated again.

Static.

Then Isabella's voice.

“Conservatory.”

Adrian moved immediately.

Daniel blocked him.

“Could be a trap.”

“It is.”

“And you're going anyway?”

“Yes.”

Elena stepped forward.

“So am I.”

“No.”

She stared at him.

“Try again.”

Adrian almost laughed.

Wrong time.

Wrong woman.

“Fine.”

The conservatory was dark when they arrived.

Snow pressed against the glass ceiling.

The silver music box sat on the marble table.

Elena approached it.

“That's deliberate.”

Adrian opened the lid.

The melody played.

Soft.

Mechanical.

Childhood flooded him.

Then the carved roses on the western wall shifted.

A hidden door opened.

Not the same one.

This passage descended.

Adrian grabbed a flashlight.

“Elena stays.”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

Daniel looked at Elena.

“I've learned not to argue with her.”

They descended.

The staircase ended in a concrete tunnel.

Newer than the others.

Electrical cables ran along the wall.

Adrian touched one.

“Fiber.”

Daniel nodded.

“Someone built a secondary network.”

“Inside my house.”

“Under it.”

Elena looked ahead.

“Difference?”

“About thirty million dollars.”

She almost smiled.

Then a door slammed behind them.

Darkness.

Daniel turned.

“Elena?”

No answer.

Adrian's pulse jumped.

“Elena.”

Nothing.

He swept the flashlight.

She was gone.

A side panel stood open.

He ran.

“Elena!”

Her scream echoed ahead.

Adrian entered the passage.

Daniel shouted behind him.

He ignored it.

The tunnel narrowed.

He found Elena's shoe.

She had finally been wearing shoes.

Now one lay abandoned beside a metal ladder.

Adrian climbed.

At the top was a room.

Screens covered every wall.

Hundreds of recordings.

Twenty years of Vale House.

A chair stood in the center.

Elena sat tied to it.

A hood covered her head.

Adrian rushed forward.

“Wait.”

Daniel entered behind him.

“Pressure plate.”

Adrian stopped.

A red light blinked beneath the chair.

Elena moved.

“Adrian?”

“I'm here.”

“Don't come closer.”

He examined the floor.

Daniel crouched.

“Not explosive. Alarm mechanism.”

“Can you disable it?”

“Give me a minute.”

“I don't have one.”

“You do if you stop talking.”

Elena laughed nervously beneath the hood.

“Is this how men bond?”

Adrian exhaled.

“She jokes when kidnapped.”

“Better than screaming.”

Daniel cut a cable.

Green light.

Adrian crossed the room and removed the hood.

Elena looked at him.

For one second, neither spoke.

Then she whispered, “You came.”

“Obviously.”

“You didn't know it wasn't a bomb.”

“Less obviously.”

Her eyes filled.

Adrian looked away first.

Daniel untied her.

“Romantic crisis later.”

One screen activated.

Richard Vale appeared.

Recorded.

Older.

Sick.

Adrian had seen his father die six years earlier.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

“If Adrian ever finds this room, then somebody failed me.”

Elena whispered, “Your father recorded instructions.”

Richard continued.

“Isabella discovered accounts she was never supposed to see. She convinced Marisol to help her.”

Another screen lit.

Security footage.

The night of the disappearance.

Isabella ran through a corridor.

Marisol followed.

Daniel Senior carried young Elena.

Adrian’s heart stopped.

There he was too.

Eleven years old.

Unconscious in Daniel Senior's arms.

Adrian whispered, “I was there.”

Footage changed.

Richard confronted them near a car.

Men appeared.

Gunfire.

Chaos.

Daniel Senior pushed Isabella into a vehicle.

Marisol grabbed Adrian.

Then another person entered frame.

Katherine.

Young.

She pointed.

Toward Isabella.

Adrian felt cold.

“She betrayed them.”

Daniel stared.

Footage jumped.

Marisol ran.

Richard caught her.

The screen went black.

Elena covered her mouth.

“No.”

Another file loaded.

Richard’s voice.

“Marisol survived. Unfortunately.”

Elena looked up sharply.

“She became useful.”

Adrian felt rage rising.

“What did he do to her?”

The recording continued.

“I allowed her to believe her daughter would die if she ever contacted anyone.”

Elena broke.

One sound escaped her.

Small.

Raw.

Adrian knelt beside her.

Richard's face remained on the screen.

“She has spent years exactly where frightened people belong.”

Image changed.

A facility.

Private psychiatric clinic.

Name:

Everwood Behavioral Residence.

Patient:

Maria Nolan.

Photograph.

Older.

Gray streaks in dark hair.

Elena whispered, “Mom.”

Alive.

Her mother was alive.

Then another file appeared.

Isabella.

Recent.

Three weeks ago.

Walking through an airport.

Adrian stared.

His mother wasn't imprisoned.

She was moving freely.

Someone had filmed her.

A timestamp showed twenty-one days earlier.

Daniel said, “She came back.”

“Why?”

The screen answered.

Isabella appeared in another hidden camera clip entering Vale House through the old passages.

She carried a bag.

Opened it.

Inside were the sentimental objects.

Adrian's watch.

The music box.

Letters.

Photographs.

She had been taking them.

Or moving them.

Elena stared.

“Your mother is the thief.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Footage showed Isabella placing the Seiko in the tunnel.

Writing the message in dust.

ADRIAN, SHE NEVER LEFT YOU.

She had done it.

The silhouette.

The hidden doors.

Everything.

Then someone entered behind her.

Isabella turned.

Her face filled with terror.

The person remained outside the camera angle.

She whispered one name.

“Katherine.”

May you like

And the recording ended.
