Chapter 15 - The Locked Room Beneath the Mansion

The secret room was beneath my own house.
I had lived above it for eleven years.
Never knew it existed.
Dominic led us through an unused wine cellar to a stone wall.
He pressed a hidden latch.
A panel opened.
Behind it was a steel door.
Old biometric reader.
Dead for years.
Except when I placed my hand against it, the machine lit green.
ACCESS: SHEPHERD AUTHORITY.
My stomach turned.
The door opened.
Inside stood servers, paper files, encrypted drives, and a communication console connected through independent lines.
My father had built an Argent node inside the mansion.
Clara stared at me.
“You really didn't know?”
“No.”
Dominic answered for me.
“Vincent's father compartmentalized everything.”
I walked toward a desk.
A framed photograph sat there.
My father.
Young Dominic.
Anthony Bell.
Samuel Hayes.
Marcus Vale.
Luca's father.
A network.
Not random connections.
An institution.
On the desk lay a ledger.
Payments.
Operations.
Medical interventions.
Security assignments.
Information acquisitions.
Some legal.
Many not.
Then I found Elena's name.
ROSSI, ELENA.
Status: Internal Risk.
I stopped breathing.
Below it:
Investigation initiated by E. Rossi regarding unauthorized medical manipulation.
Then:
Countermeasure requested.
Requested by: M.V.
Marcus Vale.
Authorized by: S-2.
“What is S-2?” Clara asked.
Dominic went pale.
“Secondary Shepherd authority.”
“Who had that?”
“Only one person.”
“Who?”
Dominic looked at me.
“Your father assigned Anthony Bell as contingency administrator.”
Anthony had lied.
He wasn't merely involved.
He had authority.
I called federal custody immediately.
Anthony was gone.
Escaped during a transport incident two hours earlier.
Too convenient.
Inside another file, we found Samuel's recordings.
Video testimony.
He had discovered Marcus altering Elena's medical results.
Samuel confronted Anthony.
Anthony threatened Clara and Rebecca.
Samuel pretended to cooperate.
Then warned Elena.
That explained everything.
Clara watched her father on the screen.
He looked exhausted.
“If you're seeing this,” Samuel said, “I probably failed.”
Clara covered her mouth.
“I am sorry, Clara.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I did not leave because I stopped loving you.”
She broke.
I stood beside her but didn't touch her until she reached for my arm.
Samuel continued.
“Marcus and Anthony are using Argent's infrastructure. Vincent Rossi does not know. Elena believes Vincent can dismantle it if he chooses to become the opposite of his father.”
I looked away.
Samuel then revealed the final secret.
Elena had survived the bombing because the blast detonated earlier than intended.
Elias Vane had discovered the device minutes before departure.
He tried to disarm it.
Failed.
Then followed the car.
When it exploded, Elias arrived first.
He took Elena's pendant because it contained a memory chip with evidence.
He later gave that evidence to Samuel.
Elias had not been the bomber.
He had been trying to save them.
Matteo remembered accurately.
But incomplete memories had made him appear guilty.
That mattered.
Because truth often arrived in pieces.
The final video showed Samuel saying:
“Anthony will not stop. Elena knows too much. Marcus fears exposure. If Elena survives publicly, they will try again.”
That was why her death had been staged.
Marcus initially agreed because he feared Anthony.
But then betrayed Elena.
He moved her between safe houses.
Eventually she became a prisoner.
Not because Marcus wanted her dead.
Because she was insurance.
I hit the desk.
Clara looked at me.
“We know now.”
“No. We know pieces.”
“Enough pieces.”
“To find Elena?”
“Maybe.”
Dominic discovered a recent access log.
Someone had remotely entered the underground system that morning.
From a location thirty miles away.
A coastal warehouse.
Property legally owned by an Anthony Bell shell company.
We prepared immediately.
Then Matteo appeared at the open cellar doorway.
Nobody had heard him approach.
He looked into the room.
At the servers.
At the files.
At me.
“This is Grandpa's?”
“Yes.”
“Bad stuff?”
I almost lied.
“Yes.”
He wheeled farther in.
“What are you going to do?”
“End it.”
“How?”
I looked at the systems my father had built.
A network based on secrets.
Fear.
Control.
The same things I had been using to protect Matteo.
Maybe protection without trust eventually becomes another prison.
“I don't know yet.”
Matteo reached for my hand.
“Mom would.”
I smiled sadly.
“Your mom usually did.”
Then an alarm sounded.
Dominic checked the console.
Someone had activated the warehouse node.
One message appeared.
Vincent. Come alone if you want Elena alive.
Below it was a live image.
Elena sat in a chair.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Her eyes lifted toward the camera.
May you like
Then Anthony Bell stepped into frame.
And placed his hand on her shoulder.
