Chapter 18 - No One Gets Replaced

Frank continued rebuilding his relationship with Damon.
Slowly.
He saw Leo occasionally.
Always when Leo wanted.
He also apologized to Olivia.
That meeting was harder.
“You made me think I had to hurt Leo to matter,” she told him.
Frank lowered his head.
“Yes.”
“That was mean.”
“Yes.”
“I already had a dad.”
“I know.”
“You just didn’t tell me.”
“No.”
Olivia touched her gold star.
“I forgive you a little.”
Frank almost smiled.
“A little?”
“That’s all today.”
“Fair enough.”
Claire watched from across the room.
Afterward she told Olivia she was proud.
“Why?”
“Because you told the truth.”
Olivia shrugged.
“Vivian does that.”
Claire smiled.
“Yes, she does.”
The Rossetti Group eventually recovered.
Damon never became its king.
There was no king anymore.
Independent directors managed the company.
Employees had protections Frank once resisted.
The family trust was rewritten.
Leo would eventually receive assets, but without conditions linking inheritance to obedience, career choices, or family control.
Damon asked Leo whether he wanted to learn about the company someday.
“Maybe.”
“That’s fine.”
“What if I want to be an astronaut?”
“Then be an astronaut.”
“What if I want to own a pizza shop?”
“Can I get free pizza?”
“No.”
“Then I forbid it.”
Leo laughed.
Damon chased him through the yard.
Vivian watched from the porch.
Years earlier, Frank had believed replacing one child with another would create strength.
Instead, the family discovered something simpler.
Children were not positions.
They were not heirs before they were people.
Olivia did not need Leo’s place.
Leo did not need Frank’s approval.
Damon did not need his father’s throne.
Vivian did not need the Rossetti fortune.
And Frank, painfully late in life, was beginning to understand that love offered freely was worth more than loyalty purchased through fear.
There was only one thing left.
The old birthday photograph.
Someone had captured the moment before Vivian reached Leo.
The red post.
The ribbon.
The bat.
Leo’s frightened face.
Vivian had kept it hidden.
Now she showed it to him.
“Do you want me to destroy it?”
Leo studied the photograph.
Then he shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that isn’t the ending.”
Vivian stared at him.
Leo smiled.
May you like
“Keep it.”
And she did.
