Chapter 6 - FIVE O’CLOCK

At 4:59 PM, Damian Sterling was still making phone calls.

Sienna was sitting with her parents in a private lounge two floors below the ballroom.

She had changed nothing.

Not the dress.

Not the makeup.

Not even the faint mark across her cheek.

Helen held her hand.

Robert stood near the window.

“You don't have to watch this,” he said.

Sienna looked at the television.

Business news channels had already begun reporting unusual movement in Sterling-affiliated debt.

No one knew why yet.

“I'm not watching them collapse.”

Robert raised an eyebrow.

“What are you watching?”

“To make sure innocent people don't collapse with them.”

Arthur entered carrying his tablet.

“Continuity agreements are ready.”

Sienna took it.

Apex would temporarily guarantee payroll for three operating subsidiaries.

Approximately eight hundred employees were covered immediately.

Another three hundred contract workers would remain active while restructuring discussions continued.

Robert reviewed the figures.

“Drivers?”

“Protected.”

“Warehouse staff?”

“Protected.”

“Farm freight?”

“Protected.”

Robert nodded.

“Good.”

At exactly five o'clock, Arthur's phone buzzed.

Then Sienna's.

Then Robert's.

Notices transmitted.

Equipment licenses suspended pending review.

Rail easements terminated where contractual violations allowed termination.

Default rights activated.

Loan enforcement initiated.

Across the city, Sterling executives were receiving the same alerts.

Arthur sat down.

“It's done.”

Sienna felt no triumph.

That surprised her.

For two years, part of her had wanted Margot to discover how wrong she had been.

She had imagined the woman's face.

The shock.

The embarrassment.

But reality felt different.

Heavy.

She looked at her father.

“Did I go too far?”

Robert was silent for several seconds.

Then he sat beside her.

“When you were ten, you found a fox caught in one of the old irrigation fences.”

Sienna remembered.

“It bit me.”

“Three times.”

Helen smiled faintly.

“You still refused to let your father hurt it.”

Robert continued.

“You said being frightened didn't make it evil.”

Sienna looked down.

“What does that have to do with Damian?”

“Nothing.”

She looked at him.

“Damian wasn't frightened when he humiliated you.”

Robert's voice softened.

“He believed he had the right.”

Sienna said nothing.

Robert squeezed her shoulder.

“You didn't destroy his company today.”

“You're sure?”

“No.”

Robert looked toward Arthur.

“Damian started borrowing against money he didn't control before today. He built the fire.”

Arthur nodded.

“All you did was decline to keep pouring water on it.”

Sienna closed her eyes.

Upstairs, something crashed.

Then shouting.

Arthur checked his phone.

“Sterling board emergency meeting.”

“Tonight?”

“Six-thirty.”

Sienna stood.

“What do they want?”

“You.”

She almost laughed.

“Of course.”

Arthur's expression remained serious.

“They're asking whether Apex would reconsider enforcement if Damian resigns.”

Sienna looked at her parents.

Helen said nothing.

This had become larger than a wedding.

Sienna's response could determine the future of more than a thousand workers.

“I'll attend.”

Arthur nodded.

“One more thing.”

He turned his tablet.

A video was playing.

Vertical phone footage.

Sienna standing at the microphone.

Damian climbing toward her.

The red mark visible across her cheek.

The caption read:

BRIDE CANCELS WEDDING AFTER GROOM HITS HER—THEN REVEALS HER “POOR” DAD OWNS COMPANY KEEPING HIS FAMILY'S EMPIRE ALIVE.

Sienna stared.

“Where did that come from?”

“A guest uploaded it twenty minutes ago.”

“How many views?”

Arthur refreshed the page.

247,000.

Helen's mouth opened.

Sienna watched the number climb.

260,000.

271,000.

285,000.

Comments appeared faster than anyone could read.

HE CALLED HER NOBODY AND THEN FOUND OUT SHE WAS HIS LIFELINE.

THE MOTHER-IN-LAW'S FACE WHEN SHE HEARD APEX.

PROTECT HER DAD AT ALL COSTS.

WHO PUT A PURSE IN THE BRIDE'S MOM'S SEAT?

Someone had uploaded a second clip from the chapel.

This one showed Damian grabbing Sienna's wrist.

Then the strike.

Then Robert shouting.

Sienna felt the room tilt slightly.

“Who recorded that?”

“No idea.”

The caption had already been shared more than thirty thousand times.

Helen looked horrified.

“People are watching this?”

“Everybody is about to,” Arthur said.

Sienna's phone began vibrating.

News networks.

Podcasts.

Unknown numbers.

Messages from old classmates.

College friends.

Former coworkers.

One came from a number she recognized.

Damian.

PLEASE TAKE DOWN THE VIDEOS.

She stared at it.

Then another arrived.

MY MOTHER IS GETTING THREATS. THIS HAS GONE TOO FAR.

Sienna frowned.

That changed everything.

She hated Margot.

But she would not tolerate threats.

She opened her social media account.

For the first time that day, she posted publicly.

No one should threaten or harass anyone involved. What happened to me was wrong. Responding with more cruelty does not make it right. Please allow the legal and corporate processes to proceed without abuse.

She posted it.

Within five minutes, the statement itself went viral.

Robert smiled.

“What?”

Sienna asked.

“Nothing.”

“Dad.”

He looked at his daughter in the ruined wedding dress.

“That's why you were always the right person to inherit Apex.”

Sienna stared at him.

“Inherit?”

Robert and Arthur exchanged a glance.

Sienna noticed.

“What?”

Arthur slowly closed his tablet.

“There is something your father planned to announce after your honeymoon.”

May you like

Robert exhaled.

And suddenly Sienna realized the Sterling crisis was not the only family secret waiting for her.
