Chapter 9 - The Dead Man's Signature

The investigation led them to an abandoned mining camp north of the valley.
Calder wanted Ingrid to remain home.
She gave him a look.
He stopped asking.
They found Whitmore alive.
Barely.
Beatrice's supposedly dead husband had been hiding under another name after discovering Crowe's plans.
He had evidence of fraud stretching across three counties.
Crowe had threatened his family.
Beatrice's widowhood had been part of the deception.
Not greed.
Protection.
Suddenly every villain looked slightly less simple.
Whitmore agreed to testify.
But Crowe learned they had found him.
The final struggle began.
Crowe gathered hired men.
Calder gathered neighboring ranchers.
Some had hated him.
Some had mocked Ingrid.
But Crowe's scheme threatened all of them.
For the first time, Ingrid watched men who once laughed at her ride onto Calder's land asking for help.
The irony was not lost on her.
Neither was the opportunity.
“You want Calder's water now?” she asked one cattleman.
The man removed his hat.
“Yes, ma'am.”
“You called me a workhorse.”
His face reddened.
“I did.”
“Why should I help you?”
He looked ashamed.
“You shouldn't.”
That answer surprised her.
“But I'm asking anyway.”
Ingrid studied him.
Then opened the gate.
“Water your cattle.”
The man nodded.
“Thank you.”
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was a beginning.
The sheriff finally arrested the banker.
Whitmore testified.
Eli confessed.
Beatrice surrendered documents.
Piece by piece, Crowe's empire began collapsing.
But Crowe himself disappeared.
Three days passed.
Then four.
Calder relaxed slightly.
Ingrid did not.
On the fifth evening, she entered the house and smelled smoke.
Not outside.
Inside.
She turned.
Silas Crowe stood behind her.
A pistol in his hand.
“Where are the documents?”
Ingrid's heart stopped.
“Gone.”
“Where?”
“With the sheriff.”
Crowe smiled.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“You're too clever for that.”
Behind him, flames began climbing the kitchen curtain.
“You kept copies.”
Ingrid backed away.
Crowe raised the pistol.
“Tell me where.”
“No.”
“Ingrid.”
Calder's voice came from the doorway.
Crowe turned.
The gun fired.
May you like
And the house erupted into flames.
