Chapter 17 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Graham Vale was found in Charleston.
Not hiding underground.
Not living under an elaborate disguise.
He owned a marina.
Different name.
Different life.
Same man.
Federal agents arrested him before sunrise.
Harper refused to see him.
Rachel did.
I went with her.
Graham looked at his daughters through reinforced glass.
No apology.
No tears.
He tried explaining everything as business.
Rachel listened.
Then asked one question.
“Did you ever love us?”
Graham couldn't answer.
That silence was the answer.
Rachel stood.
“You spent your whole life teaching people that family was leverage.”
She looked toward Harper watching from behind the observation glass.
“You were wrong.”
Graham eventually pleaded guilty rather than face trial.
His arrest closed the final branch of Victor's organization.
Dozens more accounts were uncovered.
More victims came forward.
More cases reopened.
And the story that began in our hallway became something far larger than our family.
But Violet wanted one thing.
Normal life.

So we gave it to her.
As much as anyone can.
