Chapter 6 - The River Road

Rain began before they reached the river.
Not a storm.
Just a steady autumn rain that darkened the pavement and turned the trees along River Road into blurred shadows.
Marco drove.
Alessandro sat in the passenger seat.
Emma was in the rear.
No one spoke for several minutes.
The road had changed since Vittorio died.
New guardrails.
Fresh asphalt.
Different signs.
But Alessandro still recognized the curve.
His father’s car had left the road there nineteen years earlier.
Alessandro looked away.
Emma noticed.
She didn’t ask.
Marco’s phone displayed the last known location of Vanessa’s device.
Three miles ahead.
An abandoned riverside lodge once owned by a shipping company connected to one of Daniel Mercer’s early clients.
“Property records?” Alessandro asked.
“Sold twice,” Marco replied. “Current owner is an LLC registered in Delaware.”
“Mercer?”
“We can’t prove it yet.”
“That means Mercer.”
Emma leaned forward.
“What is the plan?”
“You stay in the car.”
She sighed.
“Do we have to do this again?”
“Yes.”
“I thought we established—”
“We established nothing.”
Marco hid a smile.
Alessandro noticed.
“Something funny?”
“No, sir.”
Emma looked out the window.
“I’ll stay in the car.”
Alessandro didn’t believe her.
Neither did Marco.
They reached the lodge at 11:43 p.m.
It sat behind rusted gates overlooking the river.
Only one light burned inside.
Marco’s team spread around the property.
Alessandro checked his phone.
No signal from Vanessa.
No messages.
They approached quietly.
Inside, Daniel Mercer stood beside a fireplace.
Vanessa sat in a chair.
Her wrists were not tied.
That surprised Alessandro.
A suitcase rested nearby.
So did the missing ledger.
Daniel looked almost relieved when Alessandro entered.
“I wondered how long it would take.”
Vanessa turned.
Her face showed exhaustion.
“Alessandro.”
He looked at her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Daniel laughed.
“Listen to you. Still worried about her.”
“I asked whether she’s hurt.”
“She isn’t.”
Vanessa whispered, “He was going to take me out of the country.”
Daniel sighed.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By locking me in a warehouse?”
“You panicked.”
“You lied.”
“All successful plans require compartmentalization.”
Vanessa looked toward Alessandro.
“He used me.”
Daniel smiled.
“You were very well compensated.”
“For what? Becoming a criminal while you kept the real reason secret?”
Alessandro’s gaze moved toward the ledger.
“Give it to me.”
Daniel placed one hand on the book.
“No.”
“You know how this ends.”
“Do I?”
“You go to prison.”
Daniel laughed.
“For what?”
“Fraud. Forgery. Manipulation of medical care.”
“All difficult to prove.”
“Vanessa will testify.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Will she?”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
He continued.
“Because if Vanessa testifies, she admits she participated.”
“I know,” she said.
“You could lose everything.”
“I already did.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You still have choices.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No, Daniel. I had choices three years ago. I made the wrong ones.”
Emma remained near the doorway.
Vanessa saw her.
For a moment, shame crossed her face.
The maid.
The one person Vanessa had considered beneath everyone else in the room.
Now Emma stood beside the only people willing to rescue her.
“Why is she here?” Vanessa asked.
Emma answered.
“Because apparently I make bad decisions too.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
Almost.
Daniel looked annoyed.
“This sentimental nonsense changes nothing.”
Alessandro gestured toward the ledger.
“My father wrote about you.”
Daniel’s face remained calm.
“He wrote about many people.”
“He suspected you were stealing.”
“Vittorio was paranoid.”
“He wrote that Samuel DeMarco wanted out.”
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
“What did my father want out of?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Alessandro continued.
“Halcyon Holdings.”
For the first time, Daniel’s confidence slipped.
“What do you know?”
“Enough.”
“No. You know fragments.”
“Then explain.”
Daniel looked toward the windows.
Rain streaked the glass.
“Your father created Halcyon.”
Alessandro frowned.
“Why?”
“To hold assets he didn’t want publicly connected to the family.”
“Legal?”
“Mostly.”
“What does mostly mean?”
Daniel smiled.
“Exactly what you think it means.”
Alessandro’s expression hardened.
“My father discovered you were moving money.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Millions.”
Vanessa inhaled.
Daniel shrugged.
“Over time.”
“And Samuel?”
“Helped.”
Vanessa went pale.
“My father stole too?”
“At first.”
She looked away.
Daniel continued.
“Then Samuel developed a conscience.”
“What happened?” Alessandro asked.
“He threatened to expose everything.”
“And died.”
Daniel’s eyes met his.
“In a boating accident.”
Vanessa stood.
“You said you didn’t cause it.”
“I didn’t.”
“Who did?”
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa moved toward him.
“Who?”
“Your father’s own decisions caused his death.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“He went onto the river during bad weather.”
“To meet whom?”
Daniel stared at her.
“Vittorio.”
Alessandro froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked between them.
“Why?”
“Samuel intended to give Vittorio evidence.”
“Did Vittorio arrive?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Because I was there.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa stared.
“You were on the boat.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Daniel walked toward the fireplace.
“Samuel became emotional.”
“You fought?”
“He accused me.”
“Of stealing?”
“Of betrayal.”
“Then what?”
Daniel looked at the flames.
“He slipped.”
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“No.”
“He hit the railing.”
“No.”
“He went overboard.”
“You killed him.”
“I did not push him.”
“You left him.”
Daniel turned.
“The current was strong.”
“You left him!”
Vanessa lunged forward.
Alessandro caught her before she reached Daniel.
“Vanessa.”
She struggled once.
Then collapsed against the chair.
Daniel looked almost bored.
“He was already gone.”
Emma stared at him with disgust.
“And Vittorio found out?”
Daniel’s eyes shifted toward her.
“Yes.”
Emma continued.
“So Vittorio was going to expose you.”
Daniel smiled.
“The maid is keeping up.”
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
“Careful.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Vittorio confronted me. Said he had copies of everything.”
“The ledger.”
“One of them.”
“What happened the night he died?”
Daniel looked at Alessandro.
“That is where your theory becomes inconvenient.”
“Why?”
“Because I did not kill your father.”
“Then who did?”
“No one.”
Alessandro stared.
Daniel sighed.
“Vittorio was driving too fast in the rain.”
“How convenient.”
“He was angry.”
“At you.”
“Yes.”
“Where were you?”
“At home.”
“Can you prove it?”
“After nineteen years?”
Daniel smiled.
“Probably not.”
Marco’s voice came through Alessandro’s earpiece.
“Police are approaching.”
Alessandro did not react.
He had requested authorities before entering.
Rosanna’s promise mattered.
No revenge.
No private justice.
Daniel looked toward the window.
He heard distant engines.
“You called police.”
“Yes.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Your father would be disappointed.”
“My mother won’t be.”
Daniel reached toward his coat.
Marco’s team moved instantly.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Daniel froze.
Slowly, he removed a folded piece of paper.
No weapon.
He held it out.
“What is that?” Alessandro asked.
“Something you should read before you decide I’m the only villain in this story.”
Alessandro took it.
It was a letter.
Vittorio’s handwriting.
Addressed to Rosanna.
He unfolded it.
My darling,
If Daniel gives you this, it means I failed to tell you myself. Samuel’s death was not the only thing I have hidden from Alessandro.
Alessandro stopped reading.
His heart pounded.
Daniel smiled without humor.
“You see?”
“What did my father hide?”
Police lights appeared outside.
Vanessa stared at the letter.
Emma watched Alessandro.
He continued.
Halcyon began as my mistake. Daniel exploited it, Samuel participated, and I allowed all of it because I believed I could control men once I had compromised them. I was wrong.
Alessandro swallowed.
There was more.
But there is another truth. One that concerns Alessandro directly.
The final sentence made his hands go cold.
If he ever learns who truly financed the first Conti expansion, he may never forgive me.
Alessandro looked up.
Daniel was being handcuffed.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“I told you.”
He was led toward the door.
“This story began before Vanessa.”
Alessandro grabbed his arm.
“What does it mean?”
An officer stepped between them.
Daniel looked back.
“Ask Rosanna who owned the money your father used to build the empire.”
Then he was taken outside.
Vanessa covered her face.
Emma approached Alessandro.
“What did he mean?”
Alessandro stared at the rain.
“I don’t know.”
But when they returned to the estate at dawn and Rosanna saw Vittorio’s letter, she did.
Her face became white.
“Mother?”
Rosanna sat down.
“Alessandro.”
“What?”
“There’s something I should have told you many years ago.”
He waited.
Rosanna’s eyes filled with tears.
“The Conti fortune did not begin with your father.”
“Then who?”
Rosanna looked toward Emma.
Then back to her son.
“It began with the Foster family.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Alessandro turned toward her.
“What?”
Rosanna whispered:
“Emma’s grandfather.”
May you like
And suddenly Emma’s presence in the Conti mansion no longer seemed like coincidence at all.
