Chapter 6 - The Last Secret of the Vale Family

Adrian wanted Leah out.

That was their first real fight.

“No.”

“Leah.”

“You don't get to decide where I go.”

“This isn't the hotel.”

“It became my problem when your supposedly dead family started threatening mine.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Which is why I want you and Matteo somewhere safe.”

“Safe where?”

He didn't answer.

Leah laughed bitterly.

“That's what I thought.”

Isabella Vale had existed only in fragments of Adrian’s childhood memories.

She had been six years older.

When Adrian was fourteen, Gabriel told him his mother and sister died in a boating accident.

No bodies had been recovered.

Again.

Leah stared at him when he admitted that.

“Your family really has a problem with accepting deaths without bodies.”

“I've noticed.”

Marcus uncovered the truth.

Isabella had not died.

Gabriel had sent her overseas.

Why?

Because Isabella had discovered what her father was doing.

Unlike Adrian, she had tried to expose him.

Gabriel responded by erasing her.

New identity.

Hidden accounts.

Institutional records.

Years of isolation.

When she finally escaped his control, she did not return as a frightened girl.

She returned believing the entire Vale family deserved punishment.

Including Adrian.

“She thinks you knew,” Leah said.

“I didn't.”

“She doesn't know that.”

Isabella’s stolen money wasn't for herself.

She was paying former members of Gabriel’s organization.

Building an army.

Then Matteo found something everyone else missed.

He was sitting beside Marcus, watching security footage.

“Go back.”

Marcus smiled.

“To what?”

“The lady.”

Marcus rewound.

Isabella crossed the bank lobby.

“What?”

“Her bracelet.”

Leah leaned closer.

Matteo pointed.

A small silver emblem hung from it.

Leah recognized it.

The Grand Aurelia.

Employee anniversary charm.

Only long-term staff received one.

“That isn't Isabella’s bracelet,” Leah said.

“How do you know?”

“She never worked there.”

Leah remembered who had.

A woman named Rosa.

Housekeeping.

Quiet.

Kind.

She had worked at the hotel for more than twenty years before suddenly retiring after the gala.

Leah found an old number.

Disconnected.

Marcus searched records.

Rosa had one daughter.

The photograph made Adrian stand.

Isabella.

Rosa had hidden Adrian’s sister for years.

They found Rosa in a small house outside the city.

She didn't run.

When Adrian entered, she began crying.

“You look like your mother.”

Adrian stopped.

“Where is Isabella?”

Rosa looked at Leah.

“You must be the waitress.”

Leah was getting tired of that description.

“Where is she?”

“Going to kill her father.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Gabriel is in federal custody.”

“Not for long.”

Rosa explained.

Gabriel had arranged a transfer through corrupt officials.

Isabella intended to intercept it.

“She doesn't care if she survives,” Rosa said.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

The transfer convoy crossed an industrial bridge shortly before midnight.

Isabella’s people blocked both ends.

But Adrian arrived before the shooting started.

He walked onto the bridge alone.

Leah watched from behind Marcus’s vehicle.

Isabella emerged.

She looked remarkably like Adrian around the eyes.

“You came.”

“You wanted me.”

“I wanted Father.”

“You can have him.”

She laughed.

“Generous.”

“After you hear me.”

“I've heard enough Vale lies.”

Adrian continued walking.

“I didn't know you were alive.”

“Father said you did.”

“He lied.”

“You inherited everything.”

“I inherited a nightmare.”

“You enjoyed it.”

“For a while.”

That stopped her.

Adrian didn't pretend innocence.

“I became someone he would have respected.”

He looked toward the armored transport.

“Then I realized that was the worst thing I could become.”

Isabella’s weapon lowered slightly.

Adrian told her about Daniel.

About Leah.

About dismantling Gabriel’s criminal network.

About the evidence.

About the legitimate companies being placed under independent management.

“You expect forgiveness?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“A chance to tell you I'm sorry nobody came looking.”

Isabella’s face broke.

For one second, she became the abandoned girl she had once been.

Then a gunshot erupted.

Not from Isabella.

From the transport.

Gabriel had escaped his restraints.

Chaos exploded.

He seized a federal officer’s weapon.

Adrian pushed Isabella down.

Gabriel fired again.

Leah saw him running toward a vehicle.

She also saw Matteo’s father in Daniel’s final video.

Saw six years of grief.

Saw Adrian bleeding on the pier.

Saw every life Gabriel had treated as expendable.

But she did not chase him.

She pulled Isabella behind cover.

“Why?” Isabella demanded.

“Because Adrian came here for you.”

Gabriel reached the vehicle.

Then stopped.

Police surrounded him from both sides.

Marcus had anticipated the escape.

Gabriel looked toward his children.

For the first time, he was completely powerless.

Adrian stood.

“You could kill me,” Gabriel shouted.

Adrian shook his head.

“That would make this about revenge.”

He looked at Isabella.

“We're done living his story.”

Gabriel was arrested again.

This time there would be no private transfer.

No secret route.

No corrupt escort.

Isabella surrendered.

Because she had not killed anyone during the bridge operation, her cooperation became part of a federal agreement.

Months later, she visited Adrian.

Then again.

Healing was slow.

Messy.

Real.

Leah watched Adrian rebuild relationships instead of empires.

One evening he arrived at her apartment carrying groceries.

Matteo opened the door.

“Did you bring pizza?”

“I brought ingredients.”

“That means no.”

Adrian laughed.

Leah watched from the kitchen.

There had been a time when this man frightened an entire city.

Now an eight-year-old bullied him about dinner.

Something inside her felt peaceful.

Later, after Matteo slept, Adrian stood beside the window.

“I sold the last casino.”

“Good.”

“The shipping company is fully legitimate now.”

“Good.”

“I also resigned from the board.”

Leah looked at him.

“What are you going to do?”

“I don't know.”

For Adrian Vale, that was extraordinary.

Leah walked closer.

“You're allowed not to know.”

He touched her cheek.

“I know one thing.”

“What?”

“I love you.”

She had known.

Still, hearing it frightened her.

She looked into his eyes.

“I love you too.”

Adrian smiled.

Then his phone rang.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Leah sighed.

“You should answer.”

Marcus was calling.

Adrian listened.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Marcus spoke for nearly a minute.

Then Adrian sat down.

“What?” Leah demanded.

He looked at her.

“They finished decrypting the final section of Daniel’s ledger.”

“And?”

“There was one file nobody could open.”

“What's in it?”

Adrian stared at her.

“Daniel left a message for Matteo.”

Leah’s eyes filled.

“Where?”

Marcus sent the file.

A video appeared.

Daniel sat in front of the camera.

Older than in the previous recording.

Exhausted.

But smiling.

“If you're seeing this, Matteo, then Aunt Leah kept her promise.”

Leah covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“And there's something about your mother that nobody ever told you.”

Matteo’s mother.

A woman Leah had believed abandoned him as a baby.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“She didn't leave you.”

Leah stopped breathing.

“She was forced to disappear.”

Then Daniel said her name.

And Adrian went completely pale.

Because Matteo’s mother was someone they both knew.

May you like

Someone who had been beside them from the very beginning.
