Chapter 14 - The Sister Who Lost Everything

Vanessa knew something was wrong when the driver passed Asteron headquarters.

She looked up from her phone.

“Where are we going?”

The hired sedan continued east.

The driver did not answer immediately.

Vanessa’s stomach tightened.

The text she received appeared to come from Claire.

Need you at the legal office. Car downstairs. Security knows.

She had not questioned it.

Why would she?

The car had arrived at the secured residence.

The driver knew her name.

Everything looked official.

Vanessa unlocked her phone.

No signal.

Not no service.

Blocked.

She tried the door.

Child lock.

Fear moved through her.

“Stop the car.”

The driver looked at her through the mirror.

“Ms. Bennett, remain calm.”

“Stop.”

“We’re taking you somewhere safe.”

“Who are you?”

No answer.

Vanessa’s breathing accelerated.

Then she remembered Claire’s security briefing.

Do not fight inside a moving vehicle.

Observe.

Remember details.

Find opportunities.

Vanessa forced herself to look.

Black interior.

Commercial plates.

Driver wearing gloves.

Bridge approach.

Queens.

She slid one hand into her handbag.

Asteron security had given her an emergency beacon after the tracking attempt.

She pressed it.

Nothing happened.

The driver glanced into the mirror.

“Don’t bother.”

Vanessa froze.

“They disabled it.”

The driver knew about the beacon.

Her fear became certainty.

This was planned.

Thirty minutes later, the vehicle entered an underground garage.

Two people approached.

No weapons visible.

Vanessa was escorted into an office suite.

Not tied.

Not threatened physically.

That made it worse.

Thomas Mercer sat behind a table.

Vanessa recognized him vaguely.

“Hello, Vanessa.”

“Who are you?”

“Old family friend.”

“You’re not Claire.”

He smiled.

“Clearly.”

Vanessa backed toward the door.

A guard remained there.

“What do you want?”

“A conversation.”

“With me?”

“With Claire.”

Vanessa understood.

“I’m bait.”

Mercer smiled.

“Crude word.”

“Accurate.”

He motioned toward a chair.

Vanessa remained standing.

“Your sister has become difficult.”

“She usually is.”

Mercer almost laughed.

“I understand why she likes you.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Mercer continued.

“We’re not going to hurt you.”

“People who say that are usually planning something terrible.”

“Smart.”

“My sister is smarter.”

His smile disappeared.

Vanessa’s fear remained.

But something else rose beside it.

Pride.

For years, she had compared herself to Claire in every category that did not matter.

Clothes.

Friends.

Attention.

Followers.

Now none of that could help her.

Only the things Claire had tried to teach her.

Think.

Observe.

Don’t panic.

Mercer pushed a phone across the table.

“Call Claire.”

Vanessa stared at it.

“No.”

“She will come.”

“No.”

Mercer leaned back.

“You think she doesn’t care because she’s angry?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.”

For the first time, she was certain.

“She cares. That’s why I won’t call.”

Mercer’s expression hardened.

Vanessa continued.

“You picked the wrong sister.”

Meanwhile, Asteron security had found the sedan’s route.

Traffic cameras.

Plate recognition.

Payment trail.

Claire stood inside the operations room.

“No police sirens near the location.”

Law enforcement liaison nodded.

“Agreed.”

Leo said, “Signal stopped near Long Island City.”

Claire stared at the map.

Robert and Linda waited in another room.

Linda was barely holding herself together.

Claire had no room for their fear.

Only action.

Evelyn approached.

“You cannot go there.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“You were.”

Claire looked at her.

Evelyn knew her too well.

“You are CEO of a fifteen-billion-dollar infrastructure company,” Evelyn said. “Not tactical response.”

“My sister—”

“Is being recovered by people trained for this.”

Claire clenched her jaw.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“You don’t prove love by making yourself another hostage.”

That stopped her.

Claire nodded.

“Fine.”

Inside Mercer’s office, Vanessa continued refusing to make the call.

Then the lights flickered.

Mercer looked up.

A second flicker.

The network monitor on his desk went dark.

One guard touched his earpiece.

No signal.

Vanessa smiled.

Mercer noticed.

“What?”

“My sister.”

The fire alarm erupted.

Emergency lights flashed.

The guards moved.

Vanessa dropped beneath the table exactly as security had taught her during drills.

A crash sounded outside.

Shouting.

Doors.

Then silence.

A voice called:

“Vanessa Bennett?”

She stayed down.

“Authentication phrase?”

The voice answered.

“Build your own ground.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Asteron security.

She crawled out.

Five minutes later she was inside an armored vehicle.

Her hands shook uncontrollably.

She asked one question.

“Claire?”

“Waiting for you.”

When Vanessa entered Asteron headquarters, Claire was standing in the secure lobby.

Vanessa ran toward her.

Then stopped three feet away.

For the first time, she was not sure whether Claire wanted to be touched.

Claire answered by closing the distance herself.

She wrapped both arms around Vanessa.

Vanessa broke.

She sobbed against Claire’s shoulder.

“I didn’t call him.”

Claire held her tighter.

“I know.”

“I didn’t tell them anything.”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

Vanessa cried harder.

“For every time I made you feel like you didn’t belong.”

Claire closed her eyes.

This time, when she answered, there was no distance.

“We’ll figure that out later.”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“That sounds terrifying.”

“It probably is.”

Behind them, Linda and Robert watched.

Neither interrupted.

Neither made the moment about themselves.

And Claire noticed.

Thomas Mercer was arrested.

But the victory came at a cost.

The kidnapping became public.

Sponsors began abandoning Vanessa.

Brands cited “reputational uncertainty.”

Her social media account lost hundreds of thousands of followers within days.

People accused her of staging the event.

Others attacked Claire.

Vanessa lost contracts worth nearly a million dollars.

For the first time, the golden child had no applause.

And to everyone’s surprise—

May you like

that was exactly when Vanessa began discovering who she actually was.
