Chapter 18 - Four Hours

On the tenth anniversary of the snowstorm, I went back to the route I walked that night.

Two miles.

From my parents’ house to the gas station.

I wore a warm coat.

Gloves.

Boots.

Ryan came with me.

So did Mom.

Michael.

Evelyn.

Daniel.

Nobody planned it as a ceremony.

It simply happened.

The gas station had changed owners.

The road had better lighting.

The place where Evelyn found me was now near a row of new houses.

We stopped there.

Ryan stared at the pavement.

“This is where?”

“Yes.”

He looked sick.

Mom held my hand.

Michael stood slightly apart.

I walked toward him.

He whispered, “I still dream about closing that door.”

“I still dream about it too.”

“I wish I could undo it.”

“I know.”

“I can’t.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Ten years earlier, those words meant almost nothing.

Now they contained a decade of changed behavior.

“I forgive you.”

Michael closed his eyes.

I hugged him.

Then Mom.

Then Ryan.

Evelyn smiled.

Daniel wiped his eyes.

“You people cry constantly.”

Mom laughed.

“You’re crying.”

“I have allergies.”

“In January?”

“Very aggressive winter allergies.”

I laughed.

The snow began falling.

Soft.

Quiet.

Beautiful.

I looked up.

For years, I thought that night stole something from me.

My childhood.

Trust.

Family.

Maybe it did.

But it also exposed everything already broken.

Without that night, Ryan might have continued lying.

Grandfather’s secrets might have stayed buried.

Evelyn might never have returned.

Daniel might have died believing I was dead.

Hale House might not exist.

That doesn’t mean suffering happens for a reason.

I hate when people say that.

Some suffering is simply wrong.

May you like

The meaning comes later.

From what you build after surviving it.
