Chapter 14 - The Lie the Mercer Family Built

By sunrise, the greenhouse was surrounded by investigators.
Marcus Vale was in custody.
Sebastian Mercer sat in another vehicle answering questions through an attorney.
Adrian had voluntarily surrendered his phone, records and fifteen years of private files.
Dante stood outside beneath a gray morning sky.
Lucia beside him.
Neither knew how to speak normally.
“How have you been?” felt absurd.
“Where were you?” felt accusatory.
“I missed you” felt too small.
Finally Lucia said, “Your hair got better.”
Dante looked at her.
She smiled.
“You looked ridiculous at twenty-six.”
He laughed.
A real laugh.
Rosa heard it from several feet away and looked over.
Ellie, wrapped in a blanket, sat beside her drinking hot chocolate.
“You laugh,” Ellie announced.
Dante sighed.
“Apparently.”
Lucia stared at Ellie.
“She’s something.”
“Yes.”
“Jacob’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
Lucia’s smile disappeared.
“I loved Jacob.”
Rosa looked up.
Lucia immediately clarified.
“Not like that.”
For the first time since the kidnapping, Rosa almost laughed.
“I know.”
Lucia approached slowly.
“I owe you the truth.”
Rosa’s expression became guarded.
“So does everyone lately.”
Lucia accepted that.
“Jacob saved my life.”
Rosa looked at Ellie.
“Tell me.”
And Lucia did.
After the river crash, Jacob found her near an access road.
He had been hired to drive a backup vehicle but realized quickly something was wrong.
Lucia told him Sebastian wanted her gone.
Jacob did not know whether to believe her.
Then men arrived searching.
He made a choice.
He hid Lucia beneath equipment in his vehicle and drove away.
For months, Jacob became her connection to the outside world.
Adrian helped.
Until his betrayal.
After Sebastian found one location, Lucia stopped trusting anyone connected to the Mercer family.
Even Dante.
Especially Dante.
“I thought Sebastian controlled him,” Lucia told Rosa.
Dante stood nearby, listening.
“Maybe in some ways he did.”
Dante did not argue.
Lucia created new identities.
Moved repeatedly.
Jacob remained one of the few people who knew how to contact her.
Years passed.
Then Jacob met Rosa.
“He wanted out,” Lucia said.
“He told me he’d met someone who made a normal life feel possible.”
Rosa began crying.
“He talked about me?”
“Constantly.”
“What did he say?”
Lucia smiled.
“That you made terrible coffee.”
Rosa laughed through tears.
“That sounds like him.”
“He said you laughed whenever you got angry.”
“I do not.”
Ellie looked at her.
“You do.”
Rosa shook her head.
Lucia continued.
“When Ellie was born, Jacob asked me to disappear from his life.”
Rosa’s smile faded.
“He chose you.”
“He chose his family.”
“Then why the photograph with Ellie?”
“Goodbye.”
Lucia’s voice broke.
“That was the last time I visited them openly.”
Dante remembered the picture in storage.
Lucia holding baby Ellie.
“He asked you to promise you’d stay away if something happened to him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He knew Marcus had begun looking for Evelyn’s evidence again.”
Rosa’s face hardened.
“Was Jacob’s death an accident?”
Lucia looked toward Dante.
Then back.
“No.”
Rosa closed her eyes.
Ellie was too far away to hear.
Lucia continued quietly.
“Jacob found evidence someone had tampered with his car before the crash.”
“How could he know before?”
“He noticed problems and scheduled an inspection. He never made it.”
Rosa’s tears returned.
“Who?”
“Marcus ordered it.”
“Sebastian?”
“I don’t know whether he knew.”
Dante looked toward the vehicle where his uncle sat.
The difference mattered legally.
Emotionally, less.
Sebastian created the world in which Marcus operated.
He had helped build the lies.
Dante turned toward the greenhouse.
“What was Marcus looking for?”
Lucia joined him.
“Your mother recorded everything.”
“We found the tapes.”
“Not everything.”
Lucia pointed toward a locked cabinet.
“Evelyn kept a master ledger.”
“Of what?”
“Every company, every payment, every person.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
Dante laughed bitterly.
His mother had survived marriage to Vincent Mercer by learning exactly how powerful men thought.
Leverage.
Rebecca approached.
“Dante.”
“What?”
“The agents want your decision.”
“About?”
“The Mercer companies.”
Dante knew.
Jacob’s records implicated entities still operating under his umbrella.
Some legal.
Some not.
The old network had evolved under Dante.
He had eliminated much of his father’s brutality.
But he had never fully dismantled the machinery.
Doing so now would cost billions.
Jobs.
Properties.
Influence.
Possibly Dante’s freedom depending on what investigators found.
Lucia watched him.
“You don’t owe the family an empire.”
He looked at her.
“I spent my life protecting it.”
“No.”
She touched his arm.
“You spent your life trying to prove Dad didn’t destroy you.”
Dante looked away.
She always had been able to find the wound beneath the armor.
Rosa approached.
“What are you going to do?”
Dante looked toward Ellie.
She was drawing on the hood of Rebecca’s car.
A child who had lost her father because grown men protected secrets.
He thought about his mother.
Jacob.
Lucia.
Fifteen stolen years.
Then Dante faced Rebecca.
“Give them everything.”
Lucia exhaled.
Rebecca nodded.
“Everything?”
“Every file. Every company. Every account.”
“That may include you.”
“I know.”
“Dante—”
“Everything.”
For the first time in generations, a Mercer chose truth without calculating what it cost.
Sebastian watched from the vehicle.
Their eyes met through the glass.
The old man looked almost disappointed.
Dante felt nothing.
Later, Sebastian asked to speak with him.
Alone.
Dante agreed.
They stood inside the ruined greenhouse.
Sebastian looked tired.
“Your father would hate what you’re doing.”
“I know.”
“He built all of this for you.”
“No.”
Dante shook his head.
“He built it for himself.”
Sebastian smiled faintly.
“You sound like Evelyn.”
“Good.”
That struck.
Sebastian looked toward the floor.
“I loved your mother.”
Dante stared.
“What?”
“She hated me.”
“Understandable.”
Sebastian almost laughed.
“She knew what I was before your father did.”
“Did you cause her death?”
“No.”
Dante searched his face.
“I believe you.”
Sebastian looked surprised.
“That doesn’t absolve you.”
“I know.”
“Did you order Lucia’s crash?”
“I ordered her frightened.”
Lucia had been right.
Powerful people always found ways to make terrible sentences sound smaller.
“And Marcus?”
“He went further.”
“You let him.”
Sebastian said nothing.
Dante walked away.
His uncle called after him.
“What happens to the family now?”
Dante stopped.
He looked outside.
Rosa stood beside Ellie.
Lucia spoke with Adrian at a distance.
Morning light moved across the ruined glass.
“The family?”
Dante said.
“The family finally becomes something worth keeping.”
He walked outside.
But dismantling the Mercer lies did not repair fifteen years in a single morning.
Lucia still had one final secret.
One that explained why she had never returned even after Sebastian’s influence weakened.
And when she told Dante that evening, he realized her absence had not been based only on fear.
May you like
Lucia had been protecting someone else all along.
