Chapter 14 - They Put Lily on Trial

Tyler’s attorneys attacked everything.
Lily’s access to financial records.
Her communication with Ava.
My classified history.
Her memory after trauma.
They implied she had provoked the confrontation.
They suggested Brandon and Ethan blamed Tyler to protect themselves.
I sat behind prosecutors and kept my face expressionless.
That was harder than any mission I had ever completed.
Then Lily testified.
Tyler’s attorney approached.
“Cadet Walker, you knowingly copied restricted financial documents, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You violated academy policy?”
“Yes.”
“Yet you expect this jury to believe you were the victim?”
Lily paused.
“I can violate an administrative rule and still not deserve to have my jaw broken.”
Silence.
The attorney changed direction.
“You disliked Mr. Whitmore before that night.”
“I was afraid of him.”
“That's not what I asked.”
“No. I didn't like him.”
“Because of his family?”
“Because he threatened me.”
The attorney displayed messages.
But prosecutors had already authenticated Tyler’s deleted communications.
One message read:
YOUR DAD'S GHOST STORY WON'T SAVE YOU.
Another:
NOBODY WILL BELIEVE YOU OVER US.
Then Ethan testified.
Then Brandon.
Then Bell.
Then Ava.
The defense strategy collapsed.
Tyler was convicted on multiple charges related to the assault, kidnapping conspiracy, obstruction, and intimidation.
When the verdict was read, Lily did not smile.
She closed her eyes.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
“How do you feel?”
“Do you forgive him?”
“Was justice served?”
Lily gave one answer.
“I’m going home.”
And we did.
No celebration.
No champagne.
We ordered pizza.
Marcus came over.
Cross came too.
Rachel joined by video.
For the first time, Lily met the people who had once served beside her father.
“So you're the terrifying secret team?” she asked.
Rachel pointed at Marcus.
“He needs reading glasses to order lunch.”
Marcus objected.
“I can still hear you.”
Torres joined the video call.
“Barely.”
Lily laughed.
The house filled with voices.
People I had kept separate from my family for nineteen years were suddenly sitting at my kitchen table.
I realized hiding my past had protected Lily from danger.
But it had also hidden an entire family from her.
Marcus raised his glass.
“To Lily.”
Everyone followed.
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
She raised hers.
“To everybody who finally talked.”
That was better.
Much better.
But the following morning, Cross called.
The financial recovery was complete.
Twenty-eight million dollars had been identified.
After restitution and legal proceedings, a large portion would return to the scholarship fund.
Cross asked whether Lily wanted to attend the announcement.
She did.
Because the story had begun with stolen money meant for military families.

And Lily wanted it to end with that money finally reaching them.
