Chapter 14 - Alessandro Sets the Trap

Adrian Vale entered the attorney’s office at 9:04 p.m.
Tall.
Blond-gray hair.
Expensive overcoat.
Exactly the sort of man who could disappear in a crowd because nothing about him demanded memory.
Marco stood behind the conference table.
The moment Adrian saw him, years of buried anger appeared.
“You.”
Marco smiled without warmth.
“Still alive.”
“So are you.”
“Apparently it’s contagious.”
Alessandro did not permit either man to control the room.
“Sit.”
Adrian remained standing.
“Your father paid me to protect Camille.”
“I know.”
“Marco compromised the operation.”
Marco laughed.
“That’s a creative version.”
Adrian removed a small recorder.
“This is your brother speaking to Vittorio two years ago.”
He placed it on the table.
Audio played.
Marco’s voice:
If Alessandro ever discovers the girl, everything changes.
Vittorio:
Then make sure he doesn’t.
Marco:
I have.
The recording stopped.
Camille stared at Marco.
He did not flinch.
“Yes. That conversation happened.”
Alessandro’s expression hardened.
“Explain.”
“Vittorio was trying to locate Sophie. I convinced him I was helping keep the secret because that allowed me to feed him false locations.”
Adrian laughed.
“Convenient.”
Marco ignored him.
“I sent him to Lyon. Geneva. Brussels. Anywhere except Camille’s neighborhood.”
Camille looked at Adrian.
“And you?”
“I watched from closer.”
Sophie’s drawings.
The tall gray man.
Alessandro understood.
“You were the person she drew.”
Adrian nodded.
“I dyed my hair.”
Camille’s anger rose.
“So both of you were following us?”
“To keep others away.”
“I am beginning to hate that explanation.”
“You should.”
Adrian sat.
“Protection without consent still steals freedom.”
The admission surprised her.
“Then why come now?” Alessandro asked.
“Because the archive is about to open.”
“How do you know?”
“Giancarlo told me.”
“He’s dead.”
“He gave instructions before he died.”
Everyone seemed to have been carrying one piece of Giancarlo Vitali’s final plan.
Alessandro was tired of dead men directing living lives.
“What did he instruct?”
“If Alessandro chose disclosure over retaliation, I was to provide the final password.”
Marco stared.
“You had it?”
“Yes.”
“You let me spend four years searching Paolo’s files?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Giancarlo didn’t trust you.”
Marco laughed bitterly.
“Smart man.”
Adrian removed an envelope.
“The password is here.”
Alessandro did not reach for it.
“What’s the trap?”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“No trap.”
“There’s always a trap.”
“Vittorio has been transferring assets since the audit announcement.”
Matteo looked up.
“Where?”
“Cayman structures. Luxembourg. Singapore.”
“We’ve seen some movement.”
“You haven’t seen the main account.”
Adrian wrote a number.
Matteo entered it into his laptop.
His expression changed.
“Four hundred eighty million.”
Camille stared.
“Dollars?”
“Yes.”
Adrian continued.
“Vittorio is emptying the hidden reserve.”
Alessandro understood.
“Running.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Preparing to buy control.”
“Of what?”
“Your board.”
Vittorio planned to use hidden money to acquire enough debt and influence to force Alessandro out before the forensic audit reached him.
The leak about Sophie was distraction.
Public scandal would make the board question Alessandro’s judgment.
Then anonymous evidence of older illegal activity would surface.
Vittorio would present himself as stable leadership.
The same strategy he had attempted after Mott Street.
Only this time Alessandro could see it coming.
“What do you suggest?” Marco asked.
Adrian looked at Alessandro.
“Let him.”
Silence.
Alessandro understood first.
“If we block the transfers, he knows we found the accounts.”
“Yes.”
“So we let him move everything.”
“And document it.”
“Wire fraud. concealment. conspiracy.”
“Exactly.”
Matteo leaned forward.
“We can monitor but not necessarily access.”
Adrian slid over another page.
“You can now.”
Account credentials.
Alessandro looked at him.
“You’ve had this for how long?”
“Long enough.”
“You could have ended this years ago.”
“No.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“I could have exposed it years ago. Ending it required someone inside the Vitali structure willing to let the structure change.”
Alessandro sat back.
His father again.
A test.
Everything designed to force his hand.
He hated it.
But that did not mean the evidence was useless.
Within hours, Alessandro’s legal team contacted federal authorities through counsel.
No dramatic raid.
No threats.
No whispered orders.
Documents.
Records.
Proffer agreements.
Preservation notices.
The machinery of law moved more slowly than the Vitali world.
But once moving, it was harder to intimidate.
Alessandro also called an emergency board meeting.
Vittorio appeared by video.
“You look tired,” Vittorio said.
“I’m becoming a father.”
“Those usually cause exhaustion.”
“You would know?”
Vittorio had no children.
The remark landed.
Alessandro continued.
“I’m taking a temporary leave from executive control.”
Vittorio’s eyes flashed.
Exactly what he wanted.
Several directors began speaking.
Alessandro raised a hand.
“Independent management will oversee all legitimate companies during the audit.”
Vittorio leaned back.
“A responsible decision.”
“I thought you’d approve.”
Alessandro watched him carefully.
Vittorio believed he was winning.
Good.
“I’m also transferring my voting authority into an independent fiduciary trust.”
Vittorio’s expression changed.
“To whom?”
“A court-supervised trustee.”
The room went silent.
That meant Vittorio could not buy Alessandro’s voting control.
Not through pressure.
Not through hidden debt.
Not through Alessandro’s temporary absence.
Vittorio recovered.
“Unnecessary.”
“Perhaps.”
Alessandro smiled faintly.
“Unless someone planned to exploit instability.”
Vittorio’s eyes turned cold.
After the meeting, the transfers accelerated.
Exactly as Adrian predicted.
Money moved.
Documents were created.
Directors received anonymous offers.
Each action generated evidence.
The trap was not a warehouse.
Not a gun.
Not a threat.
It was paperwork.
Camille found Alessandro at two in the morning staring at transaction records.
“You look disappointed.”
He glanced at her.
“In what?”
“That destroying your uncle involves spreadsheets.”
He almost smiled.
“It lacks drama.”
“I’m sure you’ll survive.”
She placed coffee beside him.
Their hands touched.
Neither moved away immediately.
“Camille.”
“Yes?”
“If this ends badly for me—”
“No.”
“Listen.”
“I’m tired of men in your family preparing farewell speeches.”
He looked at her.
“Fair.”
“You promised Sophie.”
“I know.”
“Then act like you intend to keep it.”
He stared at her for a long moment.
“I loved you.”
Camille’s expression changed.
“Alessandro.”
“I never stopped.”
She closed her eyes.
“That is not fair.”
“No.”
“You can’t say that now.”
“I know.”
“Six years happened.”
“I know.”
“I became someone else.”
“So did I.”
She looked at him.
The distance between them felt both enormous and almost gone.
Then Matteo entered.
“Sorry.”
Camille stepped back.
“What?”
Matteo placed a phone on the desk.
“We have Vittorio.”
A live intercepted call played.
Vittorio’s voice instructed a banker to move the remaining reserve and destroy related records.
Then another voice answered.
A voice Alessandro recognized.
Daniel Mercer.
Camille stared at the phone.
“No.”
Daniel said:
Everything is ready. Once Alessandro opens the archive, we take the original and erase the rest.
The call ended.
Camille looked devastated.
Daniel had not merely transported the Blue House key.
He was apparently working with Vittorio.
May you like
And if that recording was real, Alessandro’s carefully designed trap had just become another trap around him.
