Chapter 14 - The Truth About Ruby’s Birth

Nathaniel spent half his life hating a dead man.

Learning Malcolm Graves was alive felt worse than losing him ever had.

Federal agents launched a search immediately.

The black sedan from the cemetery was recovered three miles away.

Empty.

False plates.

No fingerprints.

Malcolm had always known how to disappear.

Nathaniel sat inside Evelyn's estate while the recording played again.

Claire paced.

Samuel looked devastated.

Victor, brought under protection after providing testimony, stared at the floor.

“You knew?” Nathaniel asked.

Victor looked up.

“Not that he survived.”

“You were at the clinic.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me everything.”

Victor took a breath.

Eight years earlier.

October seventeenth.

The clinic had been chosen because Evelyn trusted the doctor.

Claire went into labor before dawn.

Nathaniel had no idea.

He was attending a business meeting three states away—arranged, Victor now believed, deliberately by Malcolm.

Evelyn stayed beside Claire.

Victor guarded the rear entrance.

Samuel controlled communications.

For six hours, everything went according to plan.

Then Malcolm arrived.

“How?” Claire asked.

Victor shook his head.

“Arthur.”

Samuel whispered, “It had to be.”

Victor nodded.

“Malcolm entered the service corridor with two men.”

Nathaniel's face hardened.

“And?”

“I intercepted one. Samuel redirected another.”

Samuel looked away.

“Your mother faced Malcolm.”

Claire stared.

“She never told me.”

“She didn't want you moving during labor.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

“That sounds like Evelyn.”

Victor continued.

“Malcolm reached the room after Ruby was born.”

Nathaniel's throat tightened.

“What happened?”

Victor looked at him.

“He saw her.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

Malcolm had seen his daughter before he did.

“He said she belonged to the Graves family.”

Claire's face twisted.

Victor continued.

“Evelyn told him Ruby belonged to Claire.”

Nathaniel looked toward Ruby, who was upstairs with Mrs. Alvarez.

“What did Malcolm do?”

“He drew a gun.”

Silence.

Victor swallowed.

“Evelyn shot him first.”

Nathaniel stared.

“Where?”

“Chest.”

“He survived.”

“Yes.”

“Who removed him?”

“Arthur.”

Nathaniel stood.

“Arthur was there?”

“Not inside. He arrived afterward.”

Samuel covered his face.

“I thought he was helping dispose of Malcolm's body.”

Victor nodded.

“So did I.”

Nathaniel's anger grew.

“Instead he saved him.”

“Yes.”

“Then staged the car accident months later.”

Samuel looked toward Nathaniel.

“To convince everyone Malcolm was dead.”

“Why would Malcolm accept that?”

Victor answered.

“Because he was weakened.”

Nathaniel understood.

Malcolm could recover secretly.

Control through Arthur.

Watch Nathaniel take over.

Perhaps wait.

“For what?”

Claire answered softly.

“Ruby.”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Why wait eight years?”

Samuel opened the trust documents.

“Because the transfer schedule changes when the child turns nine.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“What changes?”

“At nine, an irreversible portion of voting ownership shifts into the child's protected trust.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-five percent.”

Claire stared.

“And Malcolm can't control it?”

“Not unless he controls the guardian.”

Nathaniel went cold.

Ruby's birthday was in six weeks.

This had never been random.

The eviction.

Victor's surveillance.

Arthur's actions.

Dominic.

Everything accelerated because Ruby was approaching nine.

Nathaniel looked at Samuel.

“If Claire dies?”

Samuel's face tightened.

“Under the original documents, guardianship defaults to the legally recorded father.”

Everyone turned toward Victor.

Victor swore.

The false birth certificate.

Malcolm didn't need Nathaniel.

He needed Claire removed and Victor controlled—or discredited.

Nathaniel said, “Change it.”

Samuel shook his head.

“We can petition immediately, but the records are being challenged.”

“The second DNA test?”

“Due within hours.”

Nathaniel looked toward Claire.

“We also create a new guardianship structure.”

Claire nodded.

“Someone outside Graves.”

“Who?”

Claire thought.

“My sister in Oregon.”

Nathaniel didn't know she had one.

Another lost piece of her life.

“Do it.”

Ruby entered quietly.

“Do what?”

Claire sighed.

“You always appear at the worst moment.”

Ruby sat.

“I live here right now.”

Nathaniel crouched.

“We learned more about what happened when you were born.”

Ruby looked curious.

“Was I cute?”

Nathaniel blinked.

Claire laughed unexpectedly.

“Yes.”

“Then what else matters?”

For several seconds, even Victor smiled.

Nathaniel's chest ached.

Ruby looked at him.

“Did your dad really come there?”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Was he bad?”

Nathaniel chose his words.

“He made terrible choices.”

Ruby frowned.

“That's how adults say someone was bad without saying bad.”

Samuel coughed to hide a laugh.

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes. He was dangerous.”

“Is he still?”

“Yes.”

Ruby thought.

“Does he want me because I'm family?”

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

Then answered honestly.

“He wants control over something connected to you.”

“Money?”

“Companies.”

Ruby made a face.

“I don't want companies.”

Nathaniel almost smiled.

“I suspected that.”

“Can I give them back?”

Everyone stared.

Ruby shrugged.

“If they're causing all this.”

Samuel leaned forward.

“You may be able to change what they're used for when you're older.”

Ruby looked confused.

“How?”

Nathaniel answered.

“You could help people.”

Ruby considered.

“Like apartments?”

Nathaniel's heart tightened.

She was thinking about eviction.

“Yes.”

Ruby nodded.

“Then maybe I won't give them back.”

Claire smiled.

Nathaniel stared at Ruby.

Malcolm saw an heir.

Arthur saw leverage.

Samuel saw a beneficiary.

Nathaniel saw a child.

And the child saw a way to keep other families from losing their homes.

The second DNA result arrived at 3:42 p.m.

Court-observed.

Independent laboratory.

Probability of paternity: 99.9998 percent.

Nathaniel read it.

Then handed it to Ruby.

She squinted.

“That has too many nines.”

“It means I'm your biological father.”

Ruby looked up.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Definitely?”

“Yes.”

She thought.

“Okay.”

Nathaniel laughed.

“That's it?”

“What do I say?”

“I don't know.”

Ruby walked over.

She hugged him.

“Congratulations?”

Nathaniel laughed harder.

Claire covered her face.

For ten seconds, they were almost a normal family.

Then the estate lights went out.

Nathaniel froze.

Every backup generator should have activated instantly.

They didn't.

Daniel's voice came through the radio.

“Security breach.”

Nathaniel grabbed Ruby.

Claire moved beside him.

A phone rang in the darkness.

Old-fashioned landline.

Nobody had used it in years.

Nathaniel answered.

“Hello?”

A voice he had not heard since he was twenty-nine responded.

Older.

Weaker.

But unmistakable.

“My son.”

Nathaniel's entire body stiffened.

Malcolm Graves.

Nathaniel said nothing.

Malcolm chuckled.

“You've become disappointingly sentimental.”

Nathaniel looked toward Ruby in Claire's arms.

“What do you want?”

“My granddaughter.”

Nathaniel's face became cold.

“You'll never come near her.”

“You sound exactly as I did when you were born.”

Nathaniel shut his eyes.

“Don't.”

“You were supposed to inherit everything.”

“I don't want it.”

“Then give me the girl.”

Nathaniel's voice became terrifyingly quiet.

“She has a name.”

“Ruby.”

The fact Malcolm said it made Nathaniel sick.

Malcolm continued.

“Bring her to Graves Tower tomorrow.”

“No.”

“Then I'll show her what happens when children forget who they belong to.”

Nathaniel's expression changed.

“She belongs to herself.”

Silence.

Then Malcolm laughed.

“That woman ruined you.”

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“She saved me.”

The call ended.

Lights returned.

Daniel rushed in.

Nathaniel handed Ruby to Claire.

“What?”

Daniel looked toward the security wall.

“One of the guards is missing.”

“Who?”

“Thomas Reed.”

Nathaniel frowned.

A trusted man.

Daniel continued.

“He left this.”

A small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Malcolm Graves standing outside Ruby's elementary school.

Taken that morning.

On the back:

TOMORROW. GRAVES TOWER. OR I CHOOSE THE NEXT PLACE.

Claire whispered, “We're not taking her.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“No.”

Ruby looked between them.

“What are we doing?”

Nathaniel turned toward Samuel.

“The thing Malcolm never expects.”

Samuel raised an eyebrow.

May you like

Nathaniel picked up the complete ledger.

“We stop playing by Graves rules.”
