Chương 12 - What Lily Finally Told Me

I didn't open the door.
I called security.
Carter left before they arrived.
But the key bothered me.
Cloudcrest's locks had been changed during renovations.
Only three physical emergency keys existed.
Mine.
The property manager's.
And one sealed in my attorney's office.
So what did Carter have?
The next morning, a locksmith confirmed it.
A duplicate.
Unauthorized.
Someone had copied one.
Lily knew how.
“He borrowed your key in July.”
I stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“He told me.”
That revelation came during our longest conversation.
Lily and I sat in a café far from Cloudcrest.
No lawyers.
No Carter.
Just two women comparing lies.
“He contacted me throughout your engagement,” she said.
“How often?”
“Sometimes weeks would pass. Sometimes every day.”
My stomach hurt.
“Were you together?”
“Not physically.”
She hesitated.
“Not after you got engaged.”
I believed she was trying to be precise.
“Emotionally?”
“Yes.”
That hurt.
She continued.
“He'd call when you fought.”
“We barely fought.”
“I know that now.”
Of course.
Carter had invented conflict for Lily.
Just as he'd invented Lily's instability for me.
“He told me you monitored him.”
I laughed bitterly.
“I didn't even know his phone password.”
“He said you controlled his money.”
“We had separate accounts.”
“He said Cloudcrest was supposed to be his too.”
“It never was.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Then she told me about the key.
Carter had said he needed a copy because I treated him like a guest.
He framed it as dignity.
Independence.
Equality.
Everything had a noble explanation.
“What was he looking for when he came back?”
“I might know.”
She pulled out her phone.
“There was a safe.”
My heart jumped.
“In my house?”
“He mentioned hiding something in a wall safe.”
Cloudcrest had an old concealed safe behind a painting in the upstairs study.
I'd never used it.
During renovations, I'd considered removing it.
Carter told me it added character.
I suddenly knew why.
We went back with Miriam.
Inside the safe was a flash drive.
And documents.
Copies of my financial statements.
Property valuations.
Investment summaries.
Private information.
Some documents I had never given Carter.
“How did he get these?”
Miriam examined them.
“Some came from wedding financial disclosures.”
Others hadn't.
Someone had accessed my office.
My stomach turned.
The flash drive contained spreadsheets.
One tab was titled:
SERENA ASSETS.
Another:
POST-MARRIAGE OPTIONS.
I sat down.
There is something uniquely dehumanizing about seeing your life reduced to columns.
House.
Investments.
Trust distributions.
Business interests.
Insurance.
Liquidity.
I wasn't a bride in those spreadsheets.
I was a balance sheet.
Then Lily noticed another folder.
PHOTOS.
The surveillance images.
Michael's Plan B.
But one file was different.
A photograph of Carter and Michael outside a bank.
Another of Michael meeting a private investigator.
Someone had been documenting them too.
“Who made this drive?” I asked.
Evan examined the metadata.
“Not Carter.”
“Michael?”
“No.”
The creator initials were E.P.
Eleanor Price.
We called her.
She sighed.
“I wondered when you'd find it.”
“You put it in my house?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
“I gave it to Carter.”
Tuesday night.
The envelope.
It hadn't only contained the postnup.
It contained evidence.
“I was trying to warn him,” Eleanor said.
“Warn him?”
“That his father was crossing legal and ethical lines.”
Carter had been given evidence that could have stopped everything.
Instead, he'd hidden it.
“Why?”
Eleanor answered softly.
“Because stopping Michael would have meant choosing you over his father.”
And Carter hadn't.
That truth hurt more than the spreadsheet.
Because Carter had been offered an exit.
He had known.
He had evidence.
He could have come to me Tuesday night and said:
My father is trying to use our marriage.
Instead, he hid the evidence in my wall.
Then married me.
Then placed Lily in my bed.
I closed my eyes.
For days, I'd wondered whether Carter had been manipulated too.
Now I had the answer.
Yes.
He had.
But eventually every manipulated person reaches a door.
Carter had reached his.
May you like
He saw exactly what was happening.
And he chose to walk through anyway.
