Chapter 14 - The Truth About the Black Ring

The courthouse was surrounded by reporters before nine.
Someone had leaked the case.
Probably Gabriel.
The headline spread fast:
CHICAGO HEIRESS AT CENTER OF DELUCA FAMILY IDENTITY SCANDAL.
Adrian hated every word.
Sofia stayed home with Teresa.
Elena attended.
Luca could not.
Legally, Luca DeLuca was dead.
His appearance would cause immediate chaos.
That was Gabriel’s advantage.
So Adrian destroyed it himself.
At 8:47 a.m., he walked into the county clerk’s office with Luca beside him.
Cameras exploded.
Reporters shouted.
“Mr. DeLuca!”
“Is that your brother?”
“Luca died six years ago!”
“Was the death faked?”
“Where has he been?”
Adrian said only:
“My brother is alive. Today we are correcting the record.”
By noon, every major local outlet had the story.
The hearing moved to a larger courtroom.
Gabriel appeared in a navy suit.
No scar visible above his collar.
Calm.
Polished.
He looked exactly like the kind of man who could persuade strangers he was reasonable.
When Luca entered, Gabriel watched him.
No smile.
No greeting.
Just twenty years of resentment in one stare.
The judge reviewed emergency filings.
Gabriel’s attorneys argued Sofia’s identity documents were unreliable.
Elena had used false addresses.
Luca lived under an alias.
The child’s legal parentage required verification.
Therefore an independent guardian should temporarily oversee trust-related decisions.
Not Gabriel personally, they insisted.
A court-appointed representative.
It sounded respectable.
Until Adrian’s attorneys produced Gabriel’s financial records.
Transfers.
Shell companies.
Attempts to access the trust.
Connections to Elena’s confinement.
Then their father’s video played.
The courtroom went silent.
Gabriel watched the screen.
His face did not move.
Their father acknowledged him.
Apologized.
Then documented Gabriel’s misconduct.
When the tape ended, Gabriel stared at the floor.
Adrian almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
The judge denied the guardianship request.
Ordered Sofia remain with Elena.
Authorized expedited restoration of Luca’s legal identity subject to federal review.
And froze all contested trust transactions.
Outside, reporters shouted again.
But inside the hallway, Gabriel approached Adrian.
Security stayed close.
Gabriel looked at the black onyx ring on Adrian’s hand.
“You still wear it.”
Adrian looked down.
“Our father’s ring.”
“No.”
Gabriel smiled bitterly.
“You never knew?”
“What?”
“The rings weren’t about inheritance.”
Adrian frowned.
“Then what?”
Gabriel touched his own bare finger.
“Father gave one to each son he accepted.”
Adrian looked at Luca.
Luca wore the platinum ring Sofia had mentioned.
Gabriel continued.
“I never got one.”
The meaning changed.
Adrian had always considered the ring a symbol of responsibility.
Gabriel had spent his childhood seeing it as proof of exclusion.
Adrian slowly removed the ring.
Gabriel watched.
“You think that fixes anything?”
“No.”
“Then why take it off?”
“Because I don’t need jewelry to tell me who my family is.”
Gabriel’s face tightened.
For one second, the polished mask slipped.
Pain.
Pure and old.
Then it vanished.
“You always had everything.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No. I had a father who lied to me, a brother I buried while he was alive, a mother who died carrying secrets, and another brother who decided hurting a child would make him whole.”
Gabriel stared.
“You don’t get to turn yourself into the only victim.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“You think you’re better than me?”
“No.”
Adrian’s answer surprised him.
“I think I still have time to choose differently.”
Gabriel looked away.
Then walked.
Marco followed at a distance.
Adrian stopped him.
“Let him go.”
Luca stared.
“What?”
“He has federal surveillance.”
“You trust that?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because if we chase him, we become part of the story he wants.”
Luca frowned.
Adrian looked toward the courthouse doors.
“He wants conflict.”
“What do you want?”
“To take Sofia home.”
That evening, Adrian placed the black ring inside his father’s archive.
He expected relief.
Instead he felt strangely light.
Sofia noticed immediately.
“Where’s your ring?”
“I put it away.”
“Why?”
“I realized it was making some people sad.”
She thought about that.
“Was it magic?”
“No.”
“Then people are weird.”
“Yes.”
She returned to coloring.
Adrian smiled.
Then she said, “Daddy’s ring is prettier anyway.”
From across the room, Luca grinned.
Adrian regretted everything.
For the first time since Sofia arrived, the house felt almost peaceful.
Then Marco entered.
He looked troubled.
“Gabriel disappeared from federal surveillance.”
Adrian stood.
“How?”
“They lost him in a parking structure.”
Luca swore.
Marco continued.
“And there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Victor is gone too.”
Adrian stared.
His godfather’s room was empty.
His phone abandoned.
His car still outside.
On the pillow sat a note.
I should have told you the truth years ago.
I’m going to finish what your father asked me to finish.
Do not follow me.
Adrian folded the note.
“Of course we’re following him.”
May you like
Luca nodded.
“For once, we agree immediately.”
