Chapter 4 - The Secret Alessandro Took to His Grave

Luca read the name three times.
Alessandro Valente.
His father.
Elena’s father.
If the photograph and handwritten note were real, Elena Reyes was his half sister.
The thought struck him with such force that for several seconds he heard nothing around him.
Not Marco speaking.
Not the wind moving through the abandoned train depot.
Nothing.
Then Luca laughed once.
Coldly.
“No.”
Marco approached carefully.
“The handwriting looks like Alessandro’s.”
“Looks.”
“We’ll verify it.”
“It’s false.”
“Maybe.”
Luca looked at him.
Marco didn’t flinch.
“But we don’t assume that until we know.”
Luca hated him for being rational.
He hated the photograph more.
By the time they returned to the estate, Elena was waiting in the entry hall.
Mia had fallen asleep in her arms.
“You found it?”
Luca held up the briefcase.
Elena exhaled with relief.
“The letter?”
“Gone.”
She noticed the photographs.
“What are those?”
Luca hesitated.
For perhaps the first time in years, he genuinely did not know what to say.
Elena saw the hesitation.
“What?”
“Put Mia to bed.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Decide what I’m allowed to know.”
His jaw tightened.
“This could hurt you.”
“So could finding out everyone has been lying to me.”
Luca looked at Mia.
“Not in front of her.”
That, Elena accepted.
Thirty minutes later, they sat in his father’s study.
Luca placed the photograph on the desk.
Elena stared.
Her face drained of color.
“No.”
“That was my reaction.”
She picked up the photograph.
“My mother never said…”
“Neither did my father.”
“This doesn’t make sense.”
“I know.”
“I would be…”
“Yes.”
“Your sister.”
The word hung between them.
It changed something instantly.
Not affection.
Not yet.
But perspective.
All those quiet moments.
Their growing trust.
Luca’s unexplained instinct to protect her.
Now there might be blood beneath it.
Or perhaps the photograph was designed precisely to make them believe that.
Elena touched her forehead.
“My entire life, I wondered who my father was.”
Luca said nothing.
“She told me he couldn’t know about me.”
“Did she say why?”
“No.”
“She ever mention my father?”
“Never.”
Luca walked toward the fireplace.
“If this is true, my father abandoned you.”
“You don’t know that.”
“He knew you existed.”
“He may have had reasons.”
“There are no good reasons to leave a child.”
Elena looked at him.
The anger in his voice wasn’t really for Alessandro.
Not entirely.
Luca had spent most of his life trying to become the kind of man his father would respect.
Suddenly, his father had become a stranger.
Marco entered carrying a folder.
“We verified the ink and photograph paper.”
Luca turned.
“And?”
“Both are at least ten years old.”
“That proves age, not truth.”
“No. But we also found a locked medical archive associated with your father’s private clinic.”
Elena looked up.
“What kind of archive?”
“DNA records.”
Luca went still.
Marco continued.
“There is a paternity analysis from twenty-nine years ago.”
Elena’s age.
Luca closed his eyes for half a second.
“Result?”
Marco gave him the page.
Probability of paternity: 99.97%.
Alessandro Valente was Elena Reyes’s father.
Elena covered her mouth.
Luca stared down at the result.
His world rearranged itself.
He had a sister.
A sister who had been cleaning his house.
A sister he had addressed as an employee.
A sister who had spent two years apologizing whenever her daughter made noise in rooms that, by blood, were as connected to her family history as they were to his.
Luca looked at Elena.
She looked ready to break.
“Hey.”
She shook her head.
“I need a minute.”
“Elena.”
“I said I need a minute.”
She stood.
Then stopped halfway to the door.
“So your father knew?”
“Yes.”
“And Julian?”
“Probably.”
“And your mother?”
“I don’t know.”
Elena laughed painfully.
“My mother disappears. Your father dies. And suddenly everyone who knew anything is either dead or lying.”
Luca couldn’t argue.
She left.
An hour later, Mia found Luca sitting alone.
She climbed onto the sofa beside him.
“Where Mama?”
“In her room.”
“Sad?”
“Yes.”
Mia thought.
“Did you make her sad?”
“Sort of.”
She frowned.
“Say sorry.”
“It’s complicated.”
“Sorry is not complicated.”
Luca looked at her.
Three years old.
No diplomacy.
No politics.
No excuses.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Mia rested her head against his arm.
“Can I have my office tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“My brown case too?”
“Yes.”
“You found it.”
“I did.”
“You protect the little ones.”
Luca swallowed unexpectedly.
“I’m trying.”
Mia lifted her head.
“Good job.”
Then she fell asleep against him.
Luca remained there a long time.
Near midnight, Marco returned.
“We found Julian.”
“Where?”
“He turned himself in.”
Luca stood.
Julian waited in the downstairs library.
No handcuffs.
Two guards nearby.
When Luca entered, Julian looked tired.
Older.
“You found the photograph,” he said.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since before you were born.”
Luca’s anger surged.
“You watched Elena work in this house for two years.”
“I arranged it.”
“Why?”
“To protect her.”
“She scrubbed floors!”
“She stayed alive.”
Luca stepped forward.
“Choose your next words carefully.”
Julian remained seated.
“After Isabel disappeared, your father believed Elena was in danger. She was seventeen. We created a new identity trail, separated her from anyone connected to the Valentes, and kept her away.”
“Then why bring her here?”
“Because six years ago, David died.”
“Your brother.”
“Yes. Before he died, he told me someone was looking for Isabel’s daughter.”
“Who?”
“I didn’t know.”
“So you put Elena under my roof?”
“The safest place I knew.”
“You could have told me.”
“Your father specifically ordered me not to.”
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“That promise died with him.”
“No. It became more important.”
Luca glared.
Julian continued.
“Because Alessandro wasn’t protecting Elena from enemies.”
“Then from whom?”
“Your mother.”
Luca froze.
Julian looked toward the old family portrait above the fireplace.
“Your mother discovered the affair.”
Luca’s voice went low.
“What affair?”
“Alessandro and Isabel.”
Elena’s paternity suddenly made sense.
Julian continued.
“But the affair ended years before Elena was born.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Because Elena wasn’t conceived during an affair.”
Luca stared at him.
“Then what?”
“Isabel came to Alessandro for help. She was already pregnant.”
Luca’s confusion deepened.
“But the DNA result—”
“Was fabricated.”
Luca stepped closer.
Julian stood.
“Alessandro claimed Elena as his biological daughter to protect the identity of her real father.”
“Who?”
“That is what the red ledger reveals.”
“Where is it?”
Julian looked upstairs.
“Mia has already shown you.”
Luca frowned.
“The drawing?”
“No.”
Julian reached into his coat slowly and placed something on the table.
A tiny brown key.
“Mia’s briefcase had a false bottom.”
Luca stared.
“I found this inside.”
“What does it open?”
Julian looked directly at him.
“Isabel’s safe.”
“And where is the safe?”
Julian exhaled.
“In the room your mother ordered sealed the night Alessandro died.”
Luca knew exactly which room he meant.
His mother’s private chapel.
Nobody had entered it in ten years.
They opened the chapel at 1:17 a.m.
Dust floated through the flashlight beams.
Behind the altar, they found a small wall safe.
The brown key fit.
Inside was the red ledger.
Luca opened it.
Pages of names.
Accounts.
Payments.
Dates.
And near the middle, a photograph.
Isabel holding newborn Elena.
Beside her stood Elena’s real father.
May you like
Luca recognized him instantly.
Marco Bell.
