Chapter 11 - The Wedding Penny Almost Ruined

June arrived bright and warm.

The ranch house filled with flowers.

Guests came from Laramie.

Sarah wore a simple ivory dress.

Garrett wore his best dark coat.

Penny wore blue.

She had one responsibility.

Carry the rings.

This was a mistake.

Five minutes before the ceremony, the rings disappeared.

Sarah remained surprisingly calm.

Garrett did not.

“Where are they?”

Penny looked guilty.

“I put them somewhere safe.”

“Where?”

“I forgot.”

The entire ranch began searching.

Kitchen.

Study.

Stables.

Flower baskets.

Garrett checked his pockets four times.

Finally Sarah knelt.

“Think, sweetheart.”

Penny squeezed her eyes shut.

Then opened them.

“Biscuit!”

Everyone ran outside.

The rings were inside a tiny cloth pouch tied around the cow’s neck.

Garrett stared at Penny.

She folded her arms.

“You said safe.”

The ceremony started twenty minutes late.

Nobody cared.

Sarah walked toward Garrett.

He forgot the guests.

Forgot the ranch.

Forgot everything except her.

Penny stood between them holding the rings.

The minister spoke.

Garrett’s vows were simple.

“You came into a house I had mistaken for a life. You gave me the courage to live inside it again.”

Sarah cried.

Then she spoke.

“You never saved me, Garrett. You gave me a place where I could save myself. And somewhere along the way, we saved each other.”

Penny tugged the minister’s sleeve.

“When do they kiss?”

Everyone laughed.

“Soon.”

“How soon?”

“Penny,” Sarah whispered.

Eventually Garrett kissed his wife.

Applause filled the yard.

Penny cheered louder than anyone.

That night, lanterns glowed across Thorne Ranch.

Music played.

Ranch hands danced.

Sarah rested her head against Garrett’s shoulder.

“Happy?”

He looked around.

“I don't know how to measure it.”

Then Penny climbed between them.

Garrett groaned theatrically.

“Our first evening married.”

Penny curled against him.

“You like me.”

“I tolerate you.”

She copied his stern face.

Garrett laughed.

And Sarah knew the house would never be silent again.

May you like

Thank God.
