Chapter 6 - Victor’s Final Secret

Victor did not deny it.

When Adrian confronted him at the farmhouse the next morning, Victor stared at the photograph for a long time.

Then he sat down.

Lily was inside with Claire.

Adrian remained outside.

No guards.

No raised voices.

Just two men who had known each other for years and suddenly understood that one of them had been living inside a lie.

“What did you do the night Daniel died?” Adrian asked.

Victor looked toward the trees.

“I drove behind him.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Carlo sent me.”

“To follow his own son?”

“To protect him.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“That excuse is getting old.”

Victor accepted the anger.

“Daniel had received threats.”

“From Salvatore?”

“We didn’t know.”

“What happened?”

Victor inhaled slowly.

“Daniel was driving toward Albany. I followed about half a mile behind. Another vehicle appeared between us.”

“What vehicle?”

“Black sedan.”

“Whose?”

“I never proved it.”

“Richard?”

Victor shook his head.

“No. Salvatore.”

Adrian waited.

“The sedan pressured Daniel’s car. Not violently. Just stayed too close. Daniel sped up. Road conditions were bad. He lost control on a curve.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“So Salvatore caused it.”

“I believe so.”

“Did you see the crash?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I reached Daniel before emergency services.”

Victor’s voice broke slightly.

“He was alive.”

Adrian stared.

“For how long?”

“Maybe fifteen minutes.”

“What did he say?”

Victor looked at him.

“He asked about you.”

Adrian felt the words like a physical blow.

“Me?”

“You were twelve.”

“What did he say?”

“He said, ‘Don’t let Adrian become Carlo.’”

Adrian looked away.

All his life, people had compared him to his father.

Same eyes.

Same posture.

Same instinct for numbers.

Same ability to silence a room.

Daniel, dying on the roadside, had wanted something different.

Victor continued.

“He gave me a key.”

“To what?”

“A safe-deposit box.”

“Where?”

“Queens.”

“What was inside?”

“Letters. Photographs. Documents showing his relationship to Carlo. Things Michael would need someday.”

“You gave them to Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I promised Daniel.”

Adrian turned.

“You keep making promises to dead people at the expense of living ones.”

Victor flinched.

“I know.”

“Why did you work for me?”

“To protect you.”

“From what?”

“Salvatore.”

Adrian studied him.

“Did my father send you?”

“Yes.”

Before Carlo’s staged death, he had ordered Victor to remain near Adrian.

Not as an official bodyguard.

As a hidden observer.

Years later, when Adrian needed a deputy security chief, Victor entered the organization openly.

Adrian had believed the relationship began then.

In reality, Victor had watched over him since he was twelve.

“Did you put the cuff link in my car?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Victor shook his head.

“I’ve been trying to figure that out.”

They examined the sedan again.

This time, Adrian insisted on removing panels.

Behind the rear console, Victor found a tracking unit.

Professional.

Compact.

Active.

Adrian stared at it.

“That wasn’t there yesterday.”

Victor’s expression tightened.

“Then somebody accessed the car in Manhattan.”

Richard’s network.

Or someone else.

Adrian checked security records from his building.

An employee had entered the garage the night before Adrian left for Dutchess County.

A maintenance technician.

Adrian called building management.

The technician had quit the following morning.

They found his employment file.

Fake address.

Fake references.

But one camera captured his face.

Victor recognized him.

“Salvatore’s driver.”

Adrian exhaled.

“So Salvatore wanted me to come here.”

“Why?”

“To force the trust issue?”

“Maybe.”

Adrian thought deeper.

“No.”

“What?”

“If Salvatore wanted Lily hidden, he wouldn’t guide me to her.”

Victor nodded slowly.

“So someone else used Salvatore’s driver.”

“Or the driver betrayed him.”

They went through Michael’s box again.

Near the bottom, hidden beneath old insurance papers, Adrian found a second envelope.

His name.

Not Carlo’s handwriting.

Michael’s.

Adrian opened it.

Uncle Adrian,

If you’re reading this, then something went wrong before I could meet you.

I don’t know what they told you about my father.

I don’t know whether you even know he existed.

But none of this is your fault.

I spent years being angry at a man I never met because it was easier than being angry at dead people.

If I have a child someday, I don’t want that child raised inside this anger.

If you ever find them, don’t teach them to be a Moretti the way our grandfathers understood the name.

Teach them that family is supposed to make you safer, not smaller.

Adrian stopped.

The next lines blurred.

He blinked.

Michael had written the letter years before Lily was born.

Before he knew whether he would have a son or daughter.

And yet somehow every sentence felt written for her.

Claire stepped outside.

“What is it?”

Adrian handed her the letter.

She read silently.

Her face crumpled.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Lily opened the screen door.

“Mom?”

Claire quickly wiped her face.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Why are you crying?”

“Happy tears.”

Lily frowned.

“Those are confusing.”

Adrian laughed softly.

Lily came closer.

“What does the paper say?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

She nodded.

He crouched.

“It was written by your dad.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

“For me?”

“Kind of.”

“What did he say?”

Adrian thought carefully.

“He said he wanted you to grow up knowing family should make you feel safe.”

Lily considered this.

Then she hugged Claire.

“That’s easy.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian looked away.

He was not prepared for how much the moment affected him.

That afternoon, the legal strategy moved quickly.

The independent attorneys confirmed the trust.

Carlo had placed more than three hundred million dollars in assets aside for Daniel’s descendants.

Lily was the only living descendant.

Adrian’s acknowledgment could activate the trust.

But there was a complication.

Richard Vale had filed a sealed legal challenge six years earlier.

On behalf of Salvatore.

It claimed Daniel had legally renounced all inheritance rights.

If valid, Lily would receive nothing.

The original renunciation document bore Daniel’s signature.

Victor looked at it.

“It’s fake.”

“How do you know?”

“Daniel never signed Carlo Moretti as his father on documents. He used Carlo Marino when hiding.”

Adrian sent it to handwriting experts.

Forged.

That was enough.

The court hearing was scheduled confidentially.

Adrian planned to acknowledge Lily through a family trust structure protecting Claire’s custody and Lily’s privacy.

Everything seemed finally manageable.

Until the night before the hearing.

At 11:40 p.m., Adrian received a video call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Salvatore Moretti appeared on screen.

Older than the photograph.

Gray hair.

Tired face.

Not the monster Adrian expected.

“Hello, nephew.”

Adrian stared.

“You’re alive.”

“So are you.”

“Not for lack of lies.”

Salvatore smiled faintly.

“You sound like Carlo.”

“Don’t.”

The smile disappeared.

“You found the girl.”

“Yes.”

“Then Richard failed.”

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“Richard works for you.”

“He did.”

“Past tense?”

Salvatore leaned toward the camera.

“Richard doesn’t care about me anymore. He cares about the trust.”

“What do you want?”

“To warn you.”

Adrian laughed.

“That’s rich.”

“You think I caused Michael’s crash.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

Salvatore’s face tightened.

“I frightened Daniel. I followed him. I wanted him to stop talking to Carlo. His crash was my fault even if I never touched his car.”

Adrian said nothing.

For the first time, Salvatore looked ashamed.

“But Michael?” Adrian asked.

“I never touched him.”

“Richard did?”

“I believe so.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

Salvatore looked away.

“But you should know Richard has one final document.”

“What document?”

“The trust’s original beneficiary amendment.”

“And?”

Salvatore looked directly into the camera.

“It names someone besides Lily.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“Who?”

Salvatore whispered, “You.”

Then the call ended.

Adrian stared at the black screen.

Carlo’s final secret was not only about Daniel’s descendants.

He had tied Adrian and Lily together legally.

And the meaning of that decision would be revealed in court the following morning.
