Chapter 12 - Claire’s Second Secret

Claire had not been kidnapped.
Not yet.
That distinction mattered.
North Star Storage security footage showed her entering the building at 1:46 a.m.
Alone.
At 1:51, a black SUV arrived.
Marcus Vale entered.
Neither appeared leaving.
The building was still locked from the inside.
Ortiz received the information at the same time Gabriel did.
She came to my holding room.
“You're staying here.”
“No.”
“You are under arrest.”
“Then arrest me again later.”
Rachel stepped between us.
“Both of you stop.”
Ortiz stared at me.
“If I walk you out of this building and your bail has not been approved, I lose my badge.”
“Then don't walk me out.”
“That's your plan?”
“My plans improve when I'm irritated.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Why did I agree to represent you?”
“Money.”
“Not enough.”
At 3:04, forensic analysis formally confirmed the audio accusing me had been manipulated.
Rachel filed an emergency motion.
A different judge reviewed it because Hale was suddenly unavailable.
At 3:41, I was released pending further investigation.
Ortiz met us outside.
“You planned that?”
“No.”
“I hate you.”
“People usually need longer.”
We reached North Star Storage before four.
Gabriel had surrounded the building.
No shots.
No movement.
Thermal cameras showed two people inside.
One moving.
One stationary.
We entered.
A corridor of metal doors stretched beneath fluorescent lights.
At unit 227, we found Marcus Vale.
Unconscious.
Zip-tied.
A handwritten sign rested on his chest.
HE TALKS TOO MUCH.
Claire stepped from the neighboring unit holding a metal pipe.
I stopped.
She blinked.
“What are you doing here?”
I stared at her.
“What am I doing here?”
Gabriel laughed.
Ortiz looked impressed.
Claire lowered the pipe.
“Marcus followed me.”
“So you hit him?”
“He tried to grab me.”
“With a pipe?”
“He's large.”
“You are unbelievable.”
“You're welcome.”
“For what?”
“He told me where Victor is going.”
My anger vanished.
“Where?”
“Nowhere yet.”
“That is not useful.”
“He said Victor is waiting for someone named Ava.”
Ava Reynolds.
The supposedly dead witness.
Claire opened unit 228.
Inside were boxes belonging to Daniel.
“How did you find this?”
“Credit card record.”
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“I did.”
“Then you lied and came alone.”
“I knew you would stop me.”
“Yes.”
“Exactly.”
I stepped closer.
“You have a daughter.”
“I know.”
“She almost lost you yesterday.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Claire’s anger rose.
“Because everyone has spent three years telling me to hide!”
Her voice echoed through the corridor.
“Daniel hid the truth. Elias hid the truth. You hid me at the lake. Victor wants me frightened. I'm done letting men decide that my only useful skill is staying somewhere safe!”
Ortiz looked at Rachel.
Rachel whispered, “I'm staying out of this.”
Claire continued.
“I knew Daniel better than any of you. These are his things. His passwords. His habits. If we are going to finish what he started, I matter.”
She did.
That was the infuriating part.
“You do matter.”
“Then act like it.”
I stared at her.
“Fine.”
She blinked.
“Fine?”
“You're involved.”
“That easy?”
“No. I'm furious.”
“I can tell.”
“But you're right.”
She looked suspicious.
“Are you sick?”
“Possibly.”
We searched Daniel's storage boxes.
Most contained ordinary belongings Claire had thought lost after moving.
Books.
Winter clothes.
Photographs.
Lily's baby things.
Then Claire found a music box.
Wooden.
Small.
She froze.
“I gave this to Daniel on our first anniversary.”
“Open it.”
She wound the mechanism.
A soft melody played.
The base sounded hollow.
Claire removed a false panel.
Inside was a memory stick and a photograph.
The picture showed Daniel with Ava Reynolds.
Alive.
On the back:
If Claire finds this, Ava knows where the originals are.
Ortiz photographed everything.
The memory stick contained one video.
Daniel sat in his car.
Date: the day he died.
“Claire, there’s something I never told you.”
She closed her eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
He continued.
“Ava found Victor's full ledger. She made a copy before Alessandro Moretti took the original.”
I looked at Samuel.
He nodded slowly.
So my father had taken Victor’s ledger after Ava copied it.
Daniel continued.
“Ava knows enough to prove the financial records are real.”
Then his expression changed.
“But there’s something else.”
Claire leaned closer.
“Victor knows about Lily.”
Silence.
“He knows what?”
Claire whispered.
Daniel continued.
“He believes Lily gives him leverage because she's the only person I would trade everything for.”
Claire exhaled.
For a terrifying second, I had expected a paternity revelation.
Daniel's voice softened.
“If something happens to me, Claire, do not let guilt make you disappear. Live. Please.”
Her eyes filled.
Then came the final line.
“And if Moretti helps you, don't mistake his darkness for cruelty. They aren't the same thing.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I finally said, “Your husband had questionable judgment.”
Claire laughed through tears.
It was the first time grief and happiness appeared on her face together.
Marcus Vale regained consciousness twenty minutes later.
Ortiz questioned him.
He refused everything.
Then she mentioned the sedative.
The kidnapping.
The fire.
Daniel's crash.
His confidence weakened.
Claire stood behind the one-way security window.
“He knows where Ava is.”
“How can you tell?”
“Victor never told people more than they needed. Marcus keeps looking at the clock.”
Ortiz noticed too.
“What happens at six?” she asked him.
Marcus smiled.
“Too late.”
“For what?”
“Your witness.”
My phone rang.
Samuel.
He had been reviewing old Kane records.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“I found Ava.”
“Where?”
“Not where. Who.”
“Explain.”
“Ava Reynolds changed her name.”
“To what?”
“Anna Reeves.”
Ortiz started searching.
Samuel continued.
“She owns a diner outside Madison.”
Claire looked at the clock.
4:37 a.m.
Two hours away.
Marcus began laughing.
Ortiz grabbed his collar.
“What happens at six?”
He smiled.
“Breakfast.”
I understood first.
Victor wasn't waiting for Ava.
His people were going to kill her before we reached her.
Gabriel was already moving.
“We need a helicopter.”
Weather grounded private flights.
Road only.
One hour twenty-three minutes if we broke every sensible law.
Claire grabbed her coat.
I looked at her.
“No.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Adrian.”
“I said you're involved.”
“Yes.”
“I didn't say you're driving into an ambush.”
“Then what am I doing?”
“Calling Ava.”
“We don't have her number.”
Ortiz found the diner listing.
She dialed.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
We headed for Wisconsin.
At 5:58 a.m., two minutes before Marcus's mysterious deadline, Ortiz's phone finally rang.
A woman answered.
“Hello?”
“Ava Reynolds?”
Silence.
Then a terrified whisper.
“No one has called me that in three years.”
A crash sounded through the line.
The woman gasped.
Someone entered the diner.
May you like
And the phone went dead.
