Chapter 5 - What Happened the Night Evan Died

Sarah wanted Raymond out of the house.

Dominic wanted the truth.

Lily wanted everyone to stop shouting.

In the end, the three-year-old won.

"You're scaring Captain," she whispered.

Silence filled the study.

Sarah lifted her daughter.

"I'm sorry."

Lily looked at Raymond.

"Did you hurt Daddy?"

Raymond's face broke.

"No, sweetheart."

"Then why is Mommy crying?"

Raymond had no answer.

Dominic did.

"Because adults sometimes hide the truth too long."

He looked directly at Raymond.

"Start talking."

Four years earlier, Raymond explained, Evan had called him.

He claimed he possessed evidence proving Vescari was stealing millions.

Raymond agreed to meet him at a roadside diner.

Evan never arrived.

Raymond found his truck on an industrial road.

Two men were standing beside it.

One was Michael Trent.

The other worked for Vescari.

Evan was already on the ground.

"I fired at them," Raymond said.

Sarah stared.

"They ran."

"You found Evan alive?"

"Yes."

"And?"

Raymond's voice weakened.

"He gave me the rabbit."

Sarah began crying.

"He said Lily had another one at home. He'd hidden evidence inside both."

"What did he ask you?"

"To protect you."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"And did you?"

"I tried."

"No. You disappeared."

"Because Vescari believed Evan had given me the evidence. If I came near you, he'd know."

Sarah shook her head.

"You could have told me."

"I should have."

"Yes."

"I was wrong."

"What were Evan's last words?"

Raymond looked toward Lily.

Sarah understood.

"Tell me."

Raymond swallowed.

"He said, 'Tell my girls I was coming home.'"

Sarah broke.

Four years of grief came apart in a single breath.

Dominic looked away, giving her the privacy of not being watched.

Lily didn't understand death.

She only understood her mother was hurting.

She wrapped both arms around Sarah.

"It's okay, Mommy."

Sarah held her tightly.

Across the room, Dominic stared at Raymond.

"You let me trust Michael."

"Yes."

"You let him run my security."

"I suspected him. I couldn't prove it."

"And the ambush?"

"I realized the truth too late."

Dominic's anger remained.

But the picture had changed.

Raymond was guilty.

Not of murder.

Of secrecy.

Of arrogance.

Of believing he alone could control danger.

It was a flaw Dominic recognized because he possessed it too.

Anthony interrupted.

"Michael gave us Vescari's location."

Dominic looked up.

"Where?"

"A private estate in Connecticut."

Raymond shook his head.

"It's another trap."

"Probably."

"Then don't go."

Dominic looked at him.

"Four years ago Evan Miller tried to expose Vescari."

He looked toward Sarah.

"He died because everyone powerful enough to help him was too busy protecting themselves."

Dominic turned back.

"I'm ending it."

Sarah surprised him.

"Then I'm coming."

"No."

"We've already had this argument."

"This is different."

"You're right."

Sarah's eyes hardened.

"This time I have four years of reasons."

Dominic couldn't argue with that.

But before they could leave, Anthony received another message.

Vescari had disappeared.

His estate was empty.

Then Dominic's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Dominic."

Vescari.

"Charles."

"I hear you've had an educational week."

"Where are you?"

"Close."

"What do you want?"

"Same thing I've wanted for years. Your empire."

"You shot me for money?"

"No."

Vescari laughed.

"I shot you because you were going to destroy everything."

"Everything you stole."

"Semantics."

Dominic's fingers tightened.

"You killed Evan."

"Michael did."

Sarah heard.

Her face hardened.

Vescari continued.

"Raymond arrived too late. Poor old man has been carrying that guilt ever since."

"What do you want now?"

"The drive."

"No."

"Then perhaps I should visit your new little family."

Dominic's face changed.

"They aren't my family."

Lily, sitting nearby with Captain, looked offended.

"Yes we are."

Everyone looked at her.

Dominic stared.

Lily climbed beside his wheelchair.

"You're Mr. Dom."

Apparently that settled it.

For one strange second, Sarah laughed.

Dominic did too.

Even Raymond smiled.

Then Dominic returned to the phone.

"You heard her."

Vescari was silent.

Dominic's voice became cold.

"So let me make this simple. You threatened my family."

Sarah looked at him.

Dominic continued.

"Now I'm coming for everything you have."

He ended the call.

The evidence on Evan's drive was enough to bring federal investigators into Vescari's legitimate businesses.

But Dominic wanted something more important.

He wanted proof of the ambush.

Michael provided it.

Recordings.

Payments.

Names.

By evening, Vescari's network began collapsing.

Accounts froze.

Partners disappeared.

Police warrants were prepared.

For the first time, Vescari was losing control.

Then Anthony discovered where he was heading.

"Airport."

Dominic looked at the clock.

"How long?"

"Forty minutes."

"We can make it."

Dominic turned toward Sarah.

"You stay."

She nodded.

This time she understood.

Raymond pushed Dominic's wheelchair toward the elevator.

"You're taking me?"

Dominic looked at him.

"You're still on probation."

Raymond almost smiled.

At the airport, Vescari's private plane was preparing to depart.

Police vehicles approached from the opposite entrance.

Dominic's SUV stopped near the hangar.

Vescari emerged.

For the first time since the ambush, Dominic faced the man responsible.

Vescari looked at the wheelchair.

"Pity."

Dominic smiled.

"You should save yours."

Police surrounded the hangar.

Vescari looked around.

"You think this ends anything?"

"It ends you."

Vescari laughed.

"No, Dominic."

Then his expression changed.

"You still don't understand."

"Understand what?"

"The ambush wasn't supposed to kill you."

Dominic went still.

"What?"

"It was supposed to put you in that chair."

Raymond stepped forward.

"Why?"

Vescari smiled.

"Because a dead Don creates chaos."

He looked at Dominic.

"But a broken Don?"

His smile widened.

"A broken Don destroys his own empire."

Dominic stared at him.

Vescari was arrested moments later.

But his words followed Dominic home.

The ambush had been designed to paralyze him.

Which meant somebody had known exactly where the bullets needed to strike.

Someone had known his medical history.

His route.

His schedule.

Everything.

Michael Trent couldn't have planned that alone.

Back at the mansion, Anthony was waiting.

His expression was grim.

"I found the doctor."

Dominic stopped.

"The one from the hospital?"

Anthony nodded.

"He admitted someone paid him."

"Vescari?"

"No."

Dominic felt cold.

"Who?"

Anthony placed a photograph on the desk.

Dominic stared at it.

The woman in the photograph was beautiful.

Blonde.

Elegant.

Familiar.

Vanessa.

His former fiancée.

Anthony spoke quietly.

May you like

"Your fiancée helped plan the ambush."
