Chapter 10 - The Man Waiting Beyond the Gates

The Moretti estate went into lockdown before midnight.
Lorenzo hated the word.
Lockdown.
It sounded too much like fear disguised as control.
But Sophie was asleep upstairs.
Mia and Elena had remained overnight because security would not permit departures until the breach was understood.
Marco assembled every employee in the main hall.
Thirty-four people.
Housekeepers.
Kitchen staff.
Security.
Medical personnel.
Maintenance.
Lorenzo studied each face.
Someone among them had accessed Bellhaven’s server.
The system traced the connection to the estate network.
That was all.
“Phones,” Marco said.
Nobody moved.
“On the table.”
Devices appeared one after another.
Elena approached Lorenzo.
“Mia’s scared.”
He looked upstairs.
“Why?”
“Because everybody’s whispering again.”
Of course.
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Take her to Sophie.”
“They’re sleeping.”
“Then let them sleep together.”
Elena blinked.
“In the medical bed?”
“Why not?”
“It’s expensive?”
Lorenzo stared.
Elena smiled faintly.
“That was a joke.”
“I know.”
“You looked like you didn’t.”
“I was deciding.”
Despite everything, she laughed.
The sound reminded him the house still contained something worth protecting beyond secrets.
At 1:16 a.m., Marco found the unauthorized device.
A small tablet hidden behind books in the library.
No fingerprints.
The device had been configured to erase data automatically.
“Professional,” Marco said.
Lorenzo looked at the screen.
“Carlo?”
“No.”
“You sound certain.”
“This is newer than his people’s methods.”
“Then who?”
Before Marco could answer, one of the outer guards called.
A man stood beyond the front gate.
Alone.
Unarmed.
Asking for Lorenzo.
“Name?”
“Daniel Cross.”
Lorenzo stared.
Ten minutes later Cross sat in a security room wrapped in a borrowed coat.
He looked exhausted.
Terrified.
And twenty pounds thinner than his employee photograph.
Marco stood behind him.
Lorenzo remained across the table.
“Why are you here?”
Cross laughed nervously.
“Because everywhere else feels worse.”
“Who are you afraid of?”
“Dr. Hale.”
That answer surprised Lorenzo.
“Hale?”
Cross nodded.
“Carlo paid me initially. But Hale figured it out.”
“Figured what out?”
“The condition.”
Lorenzo leaned forward.
“What condition?”
“Isabella’s family history.”
Cross swallowed.
“I found references in archived insurance correspondence. Hale realized Sophie might have an autoimmune disorder.”
“When?”
“Five months ago.”
Lorenzo’s blood ran cold.
“Hale knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he change treatment?”
Cross looked at him.
“Because by then he had made too many mistakes.”
Silence.
“He thought if another specialist reviewed Sophie’s case, he’d lose his reputation. Lawsuits. Hospital privileges. Everything.”
“So he hid it.”
Cross nodded.
“And the medication discrepancies?”
“Hale adjusted things unofficially.”
“Without documentation?”
“Yes.”
“To help her?”
“At first, I think.”
“And later?”
Cross looked sick.
“I don’t know.”
Lorenzo stood.
Cross panicked.
“I never touched her.”
“You took money.”
“Yes.”
“You accessed her records.”
“Yes.”
“You helped hide information.”
“Yes.”
Cross’s voice cracked.
“But I never wanted her hurt.”
Lorenzo stared.
He was tired of that sentence.
Carlo said the same thing.
People harmed Sophie and then retreated behind intention.
As though not wanting damage somehow erased causing it.
“Who used the tablet in my library?”
Cross blinked.
“What tablet?”
Lorenzo believed him.
Another piece remained.
Then Cross said something unexpected.
“You have a man named Victor Dane?”
Marco’s eyes narrowed.
“Security consultant.”
Cross nodded.
“He contacted me.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Lorenzo looked at Marco.
Marco went pale.
Victor Dane had designed the estate’s electronic security system.
Including Lorenzo’s personal access credentials.
Including the medical-wing cameras.
“Where is Dane?” Lorenzo asked.
Marco reached for his phone.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then one of the guards radioed.
“Mr. Ferrara, we have a vehicle moving from the west garage.”
Marco swore.
“Who?”
“Dane.”
Lorenzo stepped toward the door.
Another radio transmission came.
“He’s approaching the outer gate.”
“Stop him.”
The guard hesitated.
“He has clearance.”
“Not anymore.”
Seconds later, alarms sounded.
Not sirens.
Electronic locks.
Victor Dane had triggered an administrative override.
Lights flickered.
Doors clicked open across the west side of the estate.
Marco stared at Lorenzo.
“He built the system.”
“Shut it down.”
“We’ll lose cameras.”
“Do it.”
The entire mansion went dark.
Upstairs, Sophie screamed.
Lorenzo ran.
He took the staircase two steps at a time.
Elena had already reached the girls.
Emergency lights glowed faintly.
Mia was crying.
Sophie sat upright, terrified.
Lorenzo entered.
“I’m here.”
Sophie reached for him.
He lifted her from the bed.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Don’t leave.”
“I won’t.”
The promise left his mouth before thought.
And suddenly the security system, Carlo, Hale, Cross, the entire machinery of Moretti power seemed less important than the child trembling against his chest.
Marco appeared.
“Dane got through the gate.”
Lorenzo tightened his hold on Sophie.
“Let him go.”
Marco stared.
“Lorenzo—”
“Track him later.”
“He could have evidence.”
“I said let him go.”
Marco understood.
For once, Lorenzo would not abandon his daughter to chase the person who frightened her.
Sophie buried her face against his shoulder.
Mia climbed onto the bed beside them.
Elena stood nearby.
In the dim emergency light, Lorenzo saw his strange little circle reflected in the dark window.
A mafia boss.
A maid.
Two children.
Two stuffed lions.
And no functioning security system.
Yet for the first time in years, he understood exactly what he needed to protect.
Not the mansion.
Not the name.
Not the organization.
Them.
And when the lights returned twenty minutes later, Sophie was still holding him.
She had not disappeared back into silence.
She whispered against his collar:
“Daddy, I remembered the man.”
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
“Which man?”
“The one who came at night.”
She lifted her head.
“He fixed the cameras.”
Victor Dane.
The man who had just escaped.
May you like
And suddenly Lorenzo knew exactly why Dane had been inside Sophie’s room.
