Chapter 13 - Dario Kane Names His Daughter

Bellmont woke to chaos.

News helicopters circled Vincent Kane’s estate.

Reporters filled sidewalks.

Federal agents searched three properties.

Dario moved Lucia and Marisol to his home despite Marisol’s earlier refusal.

This time she agreed.

Not because it was luxurious.

Because it was secure.

Lucia entered the mansion and stopped in the foyer.

“You live here?”

“Yes.”

She turned slowly.

“This is ridiculous.”

Marisol burst out laughing.

Dario looked offended.

“I did not build it.”

“That doesn’t make it less ridiculous.”

Lucia immediately began exploring.

Within one hour she discovered the library.

Within two she found an unused music room.

By dinner, a stuffed rabbit sat in a chair once reserved for foreign ambassadors.

Dario watched his sterile house become invaded by childhood.

He liked it.

Marisol remained uneasy.

“Temporary.”

“Yes.”

“You said that too quickly.”

“I’m learning.”

The public pressure grew.

Vincent’s lawyers suggested Dario fabricated the daughter story to secure trust control.

Another tabloid questioned whether Marisol had participated knowingly.

That ended Dario’s patience.

He scheduled a press conference.

Marisol protested.

“Don’t put Lucia in front of cameras.”

“I won’t.”

“What are you going to say?”

“The truth.”

Dario stood alone at a podium outside Kane Foundation headquarters.

Hundreds of cameras faced him.

He looked healthier now.

No cane.

Black suit.

No visible guards.

“Six years ago,” he began, “I was told my newborn daughter died shortly after birth.”

Silence spread.

“That statement was false.”

He explained little about the ongoing investigation.

Then he said what mattered.

“My daughter survived because several people chose courage over convenience.”

Marisol watched on television from the mansion.

Lucia sat beside her.

“One of those people was Elena Vidal, Lucia’s biological mother.”

Dario paused.

“Another was Marisol Reyes.”

Marisol’s eyes filled.

“Marisol did not participate in any conspiracy. She did not steal a child. She did not seek money, influence, or association with my family.”

Dario looked directly into the cameras.

“She was handed a newborn who needed a mother.”

His voice softened.

“And she became one.”

Lucia took Marisol’s hand.

“Any suggestion that Marisol is less than Lucia’s mother because biology has now been discovered is false.”

Reporters stopped shouting.

Dario continued.

“I am Lucia’s biological father.”

The words became public for the first time.

“I am grateful beyond language that I have been given the chance to know her.”

Then came the sentence that would be replayed everywhere.

“But I did not give my daughter the first six years of her life.

Marisol did.”

At the mansion, Marisol covered her mouth.

“So if anyone wants to discuss who deserves a place beside Lucia, begin with the woman who stayed.”

Lucia looked up.

“Mom, he’s talking about you.”

“I know.”

The press conference shifted public opinion almost instantly.

Headlines changed.

DARIO KANE DEFENDS DAUGHTER’S ADOPTIVE MOTHER.

Then commentators corrected the wording after viewers complained.

DARIO KANE: “SHE IS LUCIA’S MOTHER.”

Marisol hated publicity.

But she understood what Dario had done.

He had used his power not to claim Lucia.

To protect Marisol.

When he returned home, she met him in the foyer.

“You could have warned me about the speech.”

“You would have told me not to.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why I didn’t.”

She stared.

“Terrible strategy for a relationship.”

Dario froze slightly at the word relationship.

Marisol noticed.

“Don’t look so pleased.”

“I’m trying not to.”

“You’re failing.”

Lucia ran downstairs.

“Dad!”

She collided with him.

“You were on TV.”

“I noticed.”

“You said Mom is my mom.”

“Yes.”

“Everyone already knows that.”

Dario laughed.

“Adults need reminders.”

Lucia nodded as though this explained everything.

Then she disappeared again.

Marisol moved closer.

“You did good.”

“Good?”

“Don’t ruin it.”

He smiled.

She kissed him.

Across the hallway, Isabella walked in and immediately turned around.

“I saw nothing.”

“Isabella.”

“I’m leaving.”

Lucia called from upstairs.

“Aunt Bella! Come see my room!”

Isabella sighed.

“So much for escape.”

That night, the family ate dinner together.

Family.

The word had become possible.

Then Roman entered.

He whispered to Dario.

Dario’s expression changed.

Marisol noticed immediately.

“What?”

Roman looked at her.

“We found Vincent’s phone.”

“Where?”

“Near the river.”

“Vincent?”

“No.”

Dario stood.

Roman continued.

“There’s something else.”

Security footage from the train station showed Vincent boarding a northbound train.

He was alone.

But two hours earlier, another camera captured him meeting a woman.

Marisol recognized her.

The substitute administrative worker from Lucia’s school.

She handed Vincent a folder.

Inside that folder, based on enlarged footage, were photographs.

Lucia leaving school.

Lucia at the park.

Lucia outside Marisol’s apartment.

Dario’s expression became cold.

Roman added, “The woman has been identified.”

“Who is she?”

“Mercer’s sister.”

Adrian Mercer had surrendered.

His sister apparently had not.

And she had reason to hate both Dario and Vincent.

No one knew which side she was on anymore.

Then Dario’s phone vibrated.

A text from an unknown number.

One photograph.

Lucia sleeping in her bedroom at the mansion.

Taken through the window.

Beneath it:

YOUR SECURITY ISN’T AS GOOD AS YOU THINK.

Dario showed Marisol.

Every bit of warmth left the room.

Someone was close.

Close enough to see their daughter sleeping.
