Chapter 13 - The Last Trap

The address belonged to an abandoned textile warehouse in Lowell.

Dominic did not go alone.

That fact mattered.

Federal agents surrounded the property.

State police blocked nearby roads.

Matteo stayed with the command team.

Dominic wore a wire.

Before he left, he came into the kitchen.

I was standing beside the sink.

He looked at me.

"If I don't come back—"

"No."

"Isabella."

"No goodbye speeches."

"It's not a goodbye."

"Good."

He almost smiled.

I stepped closer.

"Come back."

His expression softened.

"I'm planning to."

"Plans haven't been your family's strength."

That made him laugh.

Then he did something simple.

He kissed my forehead.

Nothing more.

No promise.

No dramatic confession.

Just warmth.

Then he left.

The warehouse smelled of dust and rust.

Dominic entered through the front alone.

Salvatore stood beneath a hanging industrial light.

Gabriel sat behind him.

Alive.

Bruised.

Furious.

"You're late," Salvatore said.

"Traffic."

Even facing the man responsible for Elena's death, Dominic found sarcasm.

Salvatore smiled.

"You've changed."

"I hear that a lot."

"Housekeeper?"

Dominic's expression didn't move.

But Salvatore saw enough.

"Interesting."

"This is about Gabriel."

"No."

Salvatore walked slowly around him.

"This has always been about you."

Dominic laughed.

"You killed my wife to get my attention?"

"I killed your wife because she thought morality made her smarter than everyone else."

Dominic's hands curled.

Agents listening outside heard every word.

Salvatore continued.

"She was going to destroy your father."

"No. She was going to expose you."

"Same thing."

"You never understood her."

"I understood her perfectly."

He smiled.

"She believed you could become better."

Dominic's voice lowered.

"She was right."

Salvatore's smile faded.

"Look at you."

He gestured around the empty warehouse.

"Handing your family's life to police. Becoming weak."

"Is that what you think this is?"

"You used to command rooms."

"I still do."

"No. You ask permission."

Dominic stepped closer.

"I used to mistake fear for respect."

Outside, agents prepared to move.

Salvatore lifted a gun.

Dominic stopped.

"Careful."

"I knew you'd wear a wire."

He reached forward and tore open Dominic's shirt.

The device was visible.

Salvatore laughed.

"Predictable."

He smashed it.

Outside, the audio died.

Everything became dangerous.

Salvatore aimed at Gabriel.

"You get one choice."

Dominic stared.

"Me or him?"

"No."

Salvatore smiled.

"Your old life or your new one."

"What does that mean?"

"Take the gun."

A second weapon lay on a table.

"Kill Gabriel."

Gabriel looked at Dominic.

Salvatore continued.

"Do that, and everything goes back to the way it was."

Dominic laughed.

"You think killing him fixes this?"

"It proves you still understand loyalty."

"To you?"

"To blood."

Dominic looked at the gun.

Then at Gabriel.

Then at Salvatore.

"No."

Salvatore's face hardened.

"Your wife died because you hesitated."

"No."

Dominic's voice was steady.

"My wife died because you murdered her."

"Semantics."

"No."

He took another step.

"And I've spent four years helping you by blaming myself for your choice."

That sentence mattered more than anything else.

For years Dominic had carried Elena's death as a punishment.

Salvatore had counted on it.

Guilt kept Dominic angry.

Anger kept him predictable.

But now he finally understood.

His mistakes were real.

His responsibility mattered.

But Elena's murder belonged to the murderer.

Not the grieving husband.

Dominic looked at Gabriel.

"I'm sorry."

Gabriel blinked.

"For what?"

"For believing it was you."

A bitter smile crossed Gabriel's face.

"Took you long enough."

Salvatore raised the gun.

"You two finished?"

Then the warehouse lights went out.

Dominic moved.

Gabriel dropped sideways.

A shot cracked.

Agents entered from multiple doors.

Flashlights cut through darkness.

Commands echoed.

Salvatore ran.

Dominic could have chased him.

The old Dominic would have.

Instead, he went to Gabriel.

Untied him.

"Can you walk?"

"Yes."

Another shot sounded outside.

Then voices.

"Suspect down!"

Dominic froze.

He ran outside.

Salvatore lay beside the loading dock.

Alive.

A bullet had struck his leg.

An officer handcuffed him.

Salvatore looked up at Dominic.

"This isn't over."

Dominic stood above him.

Years earlier, that moment might have ended differently.

Dominic might have needed revenge he could feel with his own hands.

Instead, he looked at the man who killed Elena.

And walked away.

That was his victory.

Not Salvatore's arrest.

His own refusal.

When Dominic returned home after midnight, Leo was asleep.

Lily was asleep.

I wasn't.

I stood in the foyer.

He looked exhausted.

"Gabriel?"

"Safe."

"Salvatore?"

"Alive."

"Good."

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

"You wanted him alive?"

"I wanted you to come home without becoming him."

His eyes softened.

"I did."

I walked toward him.

"So what happens now?"

"Trials."

"Investigations."

"Probably."

"Lawyers."

"Unfortunately."

"And us?"

The question escaped.

Dominic looked at me.

There was no danger left to hide behind.

No emergency.

No excuse.

Just two people standing in a quiet hallway.

"Are you still taking the foundation job?" he asked.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Good."

"That's all?"

"No."

He stepped closer.

"That's what makes the next part possible."

My heart began pounding.

"Which part?"

"The part where I ask if I can take you to dinner."

I stared at him.

"Dinner?"

"I was told normal people start there."

"Who told you?"

"Matteo."

"Then I'm immediately suspicious."

He smiled.

"Is that a no?"

I looked upstairs.

Toward two sleeping children who had somehow brought our lives together.

Then back at Dominic.

"It's a maybe."

He nodded solemnly.

"I can work with maybe."

I smiled.

For the first time, our future felt possible.

But healing had one more truth waiting for Dominic.

And it would come from the last person he expected.

May you like

His father.
