Chapter 14 - The Choice Dante Never Expected

Dante spent four hours in a federal interview room.

Mara spent three.

Neither was charged.

Not yet.

Their attorneys arrived quickly.

Evelyn’s legal team confirmed Mara’s role as an independent consultant.

Security footage established that Dante and Mara entered Benton Exchange only minutes before agents arrived.

The most damaging documents had no fingerprints matching either.

The evidence was suspicious.

But so were the circumstances.

By 7 p.m., they walked out a side entrance.

One hour until Crewe’s scheduled release.

Finn waited in a black SUV.

Dante entered first.

Mara followed.

“Did you see him?” Finn asked.

Dante did not need clarification.

“Yes.”

“Luca?”

“Yes.”

Mara’s voice was quieter.

“I saw him too.”

Finn started driving.

“Where are we going?”

Dante looked at Mara.

“Her choice.”

She turned.

“What?”

“You’ve had everyone making choices for you.”

He looked forward.

“Not this one.”

Mara stared at him.

It was a small thing.

It felt enormous.

“Halcyon.”

Finn glanced at the mirror.

“Why?”

“Because Crewe expects us to chase Luca.”

Dante looked at her.

“You think seeing him was deliberate.”

“Absolutely.”

“Why?”

“To split us.”

Finn nodded.

“If Dante searches for Luca while we fight the publication separately, everyone becomes weaker.”

Mara continued.

“So we don’t.”

Dante’s expression shifted.

“You don’t want to find him?”

Every part of her did.

That was exactly why she refused.

“I want to find him when the person manipulating us doesn’t choose the time.”

Dante nodded slowly.

Respect.

They arrived at the Halcyon at 7:18.

The grand ballroom looked different without the gala.

Empty tables.

Workers removing flowers.

Crystal chandeliers still glowing.

The place where everything began less than twenty-four hours earlier.

Evelyn waited onstage.

Matteo Rinaldi sat in the front row.

Enzo stood near him.

Dante stopped.

“Matteo.”

Rinaldi lifted both hands.

“I was finding Crewe’s backup servers.”

Finn asked, “Did you?”

“Two.”

“Locations?”

Rinaldi handed him a page.

“Toronto and Dublin.”

Finn stared.

“You did this in six hours?”

Matteo looked offended.

“I was committing international financial misconduct while you were learning to tie your shoes.”

Mara sighed.

“Can everyone please stop making crimes sound nostalgic?”

Evelyn almost smiled.

Finn worked quickly.

“We can send takedown requests, but publication may still happen.”

Mara looked at the stage.

“We don’t stop it.”

Everyone turned.

Dante understood first.

“We get ahead of it.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Meaning?”

“We release the truth ourselves.”

Silence.

Matteo laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

Mara looked at him.

“Then Crewe controls the narrative.”

“He has documents implicating all of us.”

“Some are real.”

“That is precisely the problem.”

Mara stepped closer.

“You want to survive this by denying everything?”

“I have lawyers.”

“People don’t trust lawyers.”

“Lawyers do not require trust. They require billing information.”

Dante looked at Mara.

“What exactly do you propose?”

“A public statement.”

“Tonight?”

“Before eight.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Impossible.”

“No. Uncomfortable.”

Mara pointed toward the empty ballroom.

“Crewe’s advantage is secrecy. Everybody here has spent decades protecting pieces of the past. That’s why he could weaponize them.”

Enzo looked at her.

“You want us to confess.”

“I want you to separate what is true from what is false.”

Matteo scoffed.

“The public will destroy us.”

Mara turned on him.

“Maybe some things deserve to be destroyed.”

The room went silent.

She continued.

“The tenement fire happened. Families died because repairs were ignored. Halcyon received money tied to the Cavalari family. Luca was framed. People helped hide it.”

Dante looked at Enzo.

Enzo lowered his gaze.

Mara continued.

“But Dante did not steal modern charity funds. Current Halcyon programs are not money-laundering operations. Those claims are false.”

Evelyn understood.

“Give them the truth they can verify.”

“Yes.”

“So the forged pieces become easier to challenge.”

“Yes.”

Finn nodded.

“It could work.”

Matteo stood.

“It could destroy three generations of work.”

Dante faced him.

“Then maybe three generations should have told the truth sooner.”

Matteo stared.

“You are willing to burn your family name?”

Dante looked toward Mara.

“No.”

He turned back.

“I’m willing to stop asking innocent people to carry its weight.”

Mara felt those words.

Evelyn took a breath.

“Then we do it.”

Matteo cursed.

Enzo said quietly, “I’ll speak.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I helped Vittorio frame Luca.”

Dante’s eyes hardened.

Enzo continued.

“My name belongs on that statement.”

Mara nodded.

“That matters.”

Finn checked the time.

7:31.

Twenty-nine minutes.

They drafted quickly.

Lawyers objected to almost every sentence.

Mara ignored half of them.

At 7:52, the statement went live.

Not polished.

Not comfortable.

Truth rarely was.

Dante admitted historical wrongdoing by family members while categorically denying current charity theft.

Evelyn acknowledged Halcyon’s compromised origins and announced an independent investigation.

Enzo admitted involvement in concealing Luca’s framing.

Matteo refused to sign.

At 7:59, Crewe’s release published.

For thirty seconds, the internet exploded exactly as he expected.

Then people noticed something.

Much of his “revelation” had already been disclosed.

And several modern financial records contradicted verifiable bank data released by Halcyon minutes earlier.

The story changed.

Not disappeared.

Changed.

Journalists began asking who had forged the modern records.

Finn watched analytics.

“He’s losing control.”

Mara stared at the screen.

“Not enough.”

Crewe would have anticipated resistance.

Dante’s phone rang.

Unknown.

He answered.

Daniel Crewe.

“You chose confession.”

Dante said nothing.

Crewe laughed softly.

“Unexpected.”

Mara motioned for speaker.

Dante did.

Crewe continued.

“I underestimated Ms. Vale.”

Mara replied, “Most people do once.”

“You think you won?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Mara’s stomach tightened.

Crewe’s voice became colder.

“Because the files were never the ending.”

A loud mechanical sound echoed through the ballroom.

Finn turned.

“What was that?”

The chandeliers flickered.

Mara looked upward.

Crewe said:

“The Halcyon Grand has been hiding secrets for nearly a century.”

Lights dimmed.

“Tonight, it gives one back.”

Every ballroom door locked simultaneously.

Finn ran toward the control panel.

“Electronic lockdown.”

Dante looked around.

Mara’s pulse spiked.

Workers remained inside.

Twenty-three people by her count.

Then the large presentation screen illuminated.

A live camera feed appeared.

A man sat in an unknown room.

Hands tied.

Face bruised.

Alive.

Luca Cavalari.

Mara stopped breathing.

Dante whispered, “Luca.”

Crewe spoke through the ballroom sound system.

“You have ten minutes.”

On-screen, Luca lifted his head.

His eyes found the camera.

He spoke only two words.

“Sofia, run.”

May you like

Then every chandelier went dark.
