Chapter 5 - The Guardian Who Lied

Daniel didn't run.

That surprised Julian.

Instead, his security chief stood perfectly still in the doorway while every eye turned toward him.

Rex barked.

Daniel raised both hands.

"I can explain."

Julian walked toward him.

"You have thirty seconds."

Daniel looked at Victor.

"Those photographs aren't what they seem."

"Then tell me what they are."

"The SUV belonged to my division."

"Was it following Mateo?"

"Yes."

Camille made a broken sound.

Julian's expression hardened.

"Why?"

"Because your father ordered it."

That stopped everyone.

Daniel explained that Henry Ashworth had created a private security team during the final months of his illness.

Its mission was to protect Mateo after the young man discovered Victor's financial network.

Daniel had been assigned to watch him.

On the night Mateo died, Daniel's men followed him because they knew someone else was hunting him.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Victor.

"One of yours."

Victor shook his head.

"Name him."

"Samuel Creed."

Victor's face changed.

Julian noticed.

"Who is Creed?"

"My former accountant," Victor said.

"Former?"

"He disappeared with several million dollars."

Thomas suddenly understood.

"The missing payments."

Victor nodded.

For years Thomas believed money was going to Victor.

Some of it was.

But millions had been diverted by Samuel Creed, who had learned enough about both branches of the Ashworth family to manipulate them against each other.

Mateo discovered Creed's scheme.

That was why he died.

Julian looked at Daniel.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I failed."

Daniel's voice cracked for the first time.

"My men lost Mateo's car for four minutes. When we found him, he'd gone off the road."

"Was he alive?"

Daniel looked at Camille.

"For a few minutes."

Camille covered her mouth.

"What did he say?"

Daniel reached into his shirt and removed a chain.

A small silver ring hung from it.

Camille gasped.

"His wedding ring."

"He gave it to me."

Daniel handed it over.

"He told me to protect you and Elsie. And he said Creed had the ledger."

Julian frowned.

"But Elsie said Thomas took the blue book."

Thomas nodded.

"I did."

"Then Creed didn't have it."

"Not that ledger."

Everyone went silent.

There were two.

Mateo's blue notebook contained records of Victor's extortion.

But another ledger documented Samuel Creed's theft.

And nobody knew where it was.

Except perhaps Elsie.

Julian crouched beside her.

"Do you remember Daddy hiding another book?"

Elsie thought.

Then shook her head.

"Not book."

"What?"

She pointed toward Rex.

"Dog."

Julian looked at the animal.

Rex wore the same heavy leather collar he had worn for years.

Suddenly Julian remembered something.

Mateo had occasionally worked on the estate before his death.

He had met Rex.

"Daniel."

Daniel removed Rex's collar.

Inside the leather lining was a narrow waterproof compartment.

Thomas stared.

"You've got to be kidding."

Julian opened it.

A tiny memory card fell into his palm.

Mateo had hidden the evidence on Julian's dog.

Rex had carried it for more than a year.

They loaded the card onto an isolated laptop.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Bank transfers.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

Messages.

Everything Samuel Creed had done.

Enough evidence to dismantle his network.

Enough to clear Thomas of Mateo's death.

Enough to prove Victor had been extorting Henry but had not ordered Mateo killed.

Camille cried quietly as Mateo's final video appeared.

He sat inside his car.

"If Camille ever sees this, tell her I'm sorry."

She pressed her hand against the screen.

Mateo explained everything.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

"Elsie is the best thing I ever did."

Camille sobbed.

Julian looked away, giving her privacy.

Mateo's recording continued.

"And if Julian Ashworth finds this..."

Julian turned back.

"Your father believed you could make this family something better than what we inherited."

Julian stared at the screen.

"Don't waste that."

The recording ended.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then alarms sounded.

Rex leaped up.

Daniel checked his phone.

"South gate."

A vehicle had breached the outer property.

Samuel Creed had realized they found the card.

But he had made one mistake.

He assumed Julian would respond like the men who came before him.

With chaos.

Instead Julian called law enforcement contacts, provided copies of the evidence, and ordered everyone inside.

He wasn't going to start a war.

He was going to end one.

Creed's vehicle never reached the house.

Authorities intercepted it outside the property after Daniel supplied its location.

No gunfight.

No bloodshed.

Just flashing lights in the distance and a man discovering that evidence was more powerful than intimidation.

By sunset, Samuel Creed was in custody.

Victor stood at the gate preparing to leave.

"You won," he told Julian.

"No."

Julian looked toward Camille and Elsie.

"We survived."

Victor glanced at his granddaughter.

"Will you let me know her?"

"That's Camille's decision."

Victor nodded.

For once, he accepted a boundary.

Thomas approached Julian after Victor left.

"I'll resign."

Julian looked at him.

"Probably."

Thomas almost smiled.

"But not tonight."

"Why?"

"Because there's one question left."

Julian held Mateo's memory card.

"Who helped Creed disable my security system yesterday?"

Thomas's smile disappeared.

Daniel checked the access logs.

His face went pale.

"What?"

Daniel turned the screen toward Julian.

The credentials belonged to someone who had been inside the estate for thirty-two years.

Someone Julian trusted more than Thomas.

Someone who had served his father before him.

Julian read the name.

Then looked toward the main house.

Mrs. Eleanor Whitcomb.

The elderly woman who had practically raised Julian.

And at that exact moment, Elsie whispered:

"She's gone."
