Chapter 18 - The Last Secret of Patrick Walsh

Evan Bell talked because men like Bell were loyal only while loyalty was profitable.

Patrick Walsh had fled to a private property outside Providence.

But Bell revealed something else.

Walsh had one final archive.

Twenty-three years of recordings.

Insurance.

Damian could have destroyed them.

Instead, he turned the location over to investigators.

Leo stared at him.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“We spent half our adult lives handling things ourselves.”

“How did that work?”

Leo thought.

“Poorly, apparently.”

Walsh was arrested forty-eight hours later.

No dramatic gunfight.

No glorious final confrontation.

Police found him inside a lake house packing documents.

For Damian, that felt appropriate.

Men like Patrick Walsh built myths around themselves.

In the end, Walsh looked less like a legend than an elderly criminal surprised that consequences had finally reached his door.

The news spread rapidly.

Russo Logistics appeared in headlines because of Vincent’s confession and historic crimes connected to the company.

Damian held a press conference.

His attorneys begged him not to.

He did anyway.

“My father participated in criminal activity,” he said before dozens of cameras. “He also spent later years trying to repair some of the harm he caused. Neither fact cancels the other.”

Reporters shouted questions.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Will you resign?”

“I will cooperate with every lawful investigation.”

“Is Russo Logistics connected to organized crime today?”

“Our records are being independently reviewed.”

“What about Patrick Walsh?”

“That is for the courts.”

Then a reporter asked:

“Who is Khloe Hayes?”

Damian stopped.

The room quieted.

He could have said secretary.

Employee.

Witness.

Instead:

“She is the person who found the truth when everyone else benefited from ignoring it.”

Across New York, Khloe watched the press conference from Thomas’s farmhouse.

Her grandfather sat beside her.

“He loves you.”

Khloe nearly dropped her tea.

“Grandpa.”

“I’m old, not blind.”

“He didn’t say that.”

“He didn’t need to.”

Khloe changed the channel.

Thomas smiled.

“You’re avoiding it.”

“I’ve had enough drama.”

“You come from the Hayes family. Drama is apparently hereditary.”

She laughed.

Three weeks passed.

Then six.

Investigations continued.

Several Russo executives resigned.

Damian closed two questionable divisions entirely.

He converted another into a legitimate logistics subsidiary with independent oversight.

People called it weakness.

Others called it strategy.

Damian did not care.

For the first time, he was building something not designed by his father.

Khloe began consulting for companies investigating internal fraud.

She was extremely good at it.

Damian knew because Leo provided occasional updates.

Khloe discovered this.

She called him.

“Stop having Leo check on me.”

Damian looked toward Leo.

Leo quietly left the office.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You’re terrible at lying.”

“I’ve been told the opposite.”

“By criminals.”

“Valid professionals.”

“Damian.”

“Fine.”

“Thank you.”

A pause.

“How are you?”

Khloe asked.

He looked around the office.

Her old desk remained empty.

“Busy.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He smiled.

“I’m learning.”

Another pause.

“I’m coming to New York next week.”

His heart reacted before his face did.

“For work?”

“Yes.”

“Coffee?”

“With you?”

“I was considering inviting a different Khloe Hayes.”

She laughed.

“I’ll think about it.”

“You already decided.”

“You’re arrogant.”

“Thursday?”

Silence.

Then:

“Seven.”

He looked at her old schedule board.

“Seven works.”

“Goodnight, Damian.”

“Goodnight, Khloe.”

After the call, Leo leaned around the door.

“Seven?”

May you like

Damian looked at him.

“Go away.”
