Chapter 7 - The Woman They Thought They Could Use

Marco talked.

Not willingly.

But evidence talked louder.

Sofia’s recording led investigators to records.

Records led to accounts.

Accounts led to witnesses.

The criminal structure Marco’s father had created began collapsing.

Dominic made another choice no one expected.

He cooperated.

Not blindly.

Not without lawyers.

But enough.

He dismantled the parts of his family organization that survived through violence and corruption.

People called him weak.

Dominic did not care.

Lena did.

“You’re destroying your own empire.”

They stood in the kitchen late one evening.

Dominic shrugged.

“Maybe it needed destroying.”

“What will you do?”

“Something boring.”

“You wouldn't survive.”

He smiled.

“Restaurants.”

Lena laughed.

“You know nothing about restaurants.”

“I know a chef.”

The laughter faded.

Their eyes met.

Weeks had passed since the kidnapping.

Dominic had never touched her romantically.

Never pressured.

Never used what happened to create obligation.

That mattered more than Lena wanted it to.

“Why haven't you kissed me?”

Dominic almost choked on his coffee.

She enjoyed that.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

He put down the cup.

“Because when you came here, you didn't know why you were here. Then you discovered your father lied. Then someone tried to kill you. Then you discovered your mother's death wasn't an accident.”

He stepped closer.

“I refuse to become another man who takes something from you while you're trying to understand what you actually want.”

Lena stared at him.

There it was.

The reason.

The dangerous thing she had been avoiding.

Dominic did not want ownership.

He wanted her choice.

So Lena made one.

She kissed him.

It was brief.

Soft.

When she pulled away, Dominic looked genuinely stunned.

“That,” she said, “was my decision.”

“Yes.”

“And this is too.”

She kissed him again.

This time, he answered.

But happiness had one final price.

The next morning, Raphael arrived carrying an envelope recovered from Marco’s safe.

It contained a letter from Sofia.

Addressed to Lena.

The final paragraph changed everything.

Sofia had known Dominic as a teenager.

And before she died, she had written:

If my daughter ever needs protection, find Dominic. He is not his father.

Lena read the sentence three times.

Her mother had known.

Somehow, years before Lena met him, Sofia had chosen Dominic.

But the letter contained one more instruction.

A bank.

A box number.

May you like

And a key.
