Chapter 9 - The Brother Who Came Back From the Dead

Dominic watched the security footage fourteen times.
Gabriel entered through a service corridor.
Teresa hugged him.
Then handed him the drive.
No coercion.
No struggle.
She helped him.
Dominic stared at the screen.
“Twenty-two years.”
Luca understood.
“Dominic—”
“She raised us after our mother disappeared.”
His voice sounded empty.
“She knew Gabriel was alive.”
“Yes.”
“All these years.”
“Yes.”
“And she said nothing.”
Luca said quietly:
“She may have had reasons.”
Dominic turned.
“Everyone has reasons.”
Eliza recognized the pain beneath the anger.
Her entire life had also become a catalog of people who had reasons for lying.
Mark.
Catherine.
Gabriel.
Victoria.
They were surrounded by love expressed through deception.
She hated it.
Federal agents entered the hospital an hour later.
Dominic’s lawyers stalled them temporarily.
But they could not stay.
Their only chance was finding Gabriel and recovering the drive.
Teresa had abandoned her phone.
Gabriel disappeared again.
Then Eliza remembered something.
Matteo’s toy airplane.
Sofia said Gabriel had given it to him years ago.
Inside the battery compartment was a folded paper.
Coordinates.
A farmhouse north of the city.
They arrived after midnight.
Teresa stood on the porch.
Dominic walked toward her alone.
“Where is he?”
“Inside.”
“Why?”
“Because your brother is trying to finish what your father started.”
Dominic stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Teresa looked at Eliza.
“Protecting her.”
Gabriel waited in the kitchen.
Alive.
Older.
A scar crossing his cheek.
Dominic stepped inside.
Neither brother spoke.
Then Gabriel said:
“You got old.”
Dominic punched him.
Gabriel hit the floor.
Eliza gasped.
Luca did not intervene.
Gabriel wiped blood from his lip.
“I deserved that.”
Dominic grabbed his shirt.
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
“You let me mourn you.”
“I know.”
“You let me destroy half my life trying to avenge you.”
Gabriel’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
Dominic released him.
Then hugged him.
It happened so suddenly Eliza looked away.
Both men stood there for several seconds without speaking.
Brothers.
Eight stolen years collapsing in one kitchen.
When they separated, Dominic punched Gabriel’s shoulder.
“Never again.”
Gabriel laughed through tears.
“Agreed.”
Then came the truth.
Their father had discovered Victoria was secretly building Crown through legitimate corporations.
He threatened to expose her.
Victoria retaliated.
Gabriel discovered the conflict.
To protect Sofia and Matteo, he staged his death.
Teresa helped.
Mark eventually found Gabriel while investigating Crown.
Together they gathered evidence.
But the conspiracy grew too large.
Judges.
Executives.
Police officials.
Financial regulators.
Victoria had built a network designed to survive exposure.
“So why take the drive?” Dominic asked.
“Because it isn’t complete.”
Gabriel connected it to a laptop.
A hidden partition appeared.
Inside were files none of them had seen.
Video recordings.
One showed Victoria.
Another showed Martin Graves.
A third showed a federal agent accepting cash.
“The people downstairs trying to arrest us?” Eliza asked.
“Some of them work for her.”
Gabriel pointed toward a final folder.
“Mark never opened this.”
“Why?”
“Because it needs two keys.”
One key belonged to Gabriel.
The second—
Eliza.
Her biological mother Isabella had created the encryption mechanism years earlier.
It required genetic authentication from Isabella’s direct descendant.
Eliza stared.
“My mother made this?”
“Yes.”
Gabriel explained Isabella had discovered the family’s financial crimes before she died.
She began building an insurance archive.
Victoria stole much of it.
Gabriel recovered pieces later.
Eliza placed her hand on the scanner.
The folder unlocked.
One video appeared.
Recorded twenty-nine years earlier.
Isabella Castellano sat in front of a camera.
Pregnant.
Young.
Terrified.
“If my daughter ever sees this, her name is Elizabeth.”
Eliza covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t keep you.”
Tears blurred the screen.
“I hope Catherine gives you the life this family never could.”
Eliza began sobbing.
Dominic stood beside her.
Isabella continued.
“There is one thing Victoria must never learn.”
The video shifted.
Isabella held up a document.
“The companies do not belong to her.”
She smiled sadly.
“They belong to Elizabeth.”
The video ended.
The legal files proved Eliza already controlled the Castellano holdings.
She didn’t need to wait until thirty.
Her ownership had been hidden through trustees since birth.
Victoria had spent decades controlling assets she did not legally own.
Eliza was not about to inherit an empire.
She already owned it.
Dominic stared at her.
“That changes everything.”
“Yes,” Gabriel said.
“It means Victoria cannot sell, transfer, or leverage those companies without Eliza’s authorization.”
Eliza looked around.
“So I can shut them down?”
Gabriel smiled.
“Yes.”
For the first time since her nightmare began, Eliza possessed leverage.
Real leverage.
Then Teresa’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Victoria’s voice filled the kitchen.
“Hello, Elizabeth.”
Eliza’s blood froze.
Victoria continued.
“I imagine you finally found your mother’s files.”
Eliza looked at Dominic.
“What do you want?”
“Nothing that isn’t mine.”
“It’s not yours.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“You sound like Isabella.”
“Good.”
Silence.
Then Victoria said:
“You have until noon tomorrow to sign control of the companies to me.”
“No.”
“Oh, you will.”
“Why?”
A video arrived on Teresa’s phone.
Jenna appeared on screen again.
But this time she wasn’t alone.
Sofia sat beside her.
And Matteo.
Eliza looked toward the living room.
Empty.
Sofia and Matteo had disappeared from the farmhouse less than twenty minutes earlier.
Victoria whispered:
“Because I have Gabriel’s family.”
Then she added:
“And if you think Dominic can save everyone, ask him what happened the last time he chose between family and power.”
Dominic went pale.
Gabriel stared at his brother.
“What does she mean?”
Dominic closed his eyes.
There was another secret.
May you like
And this one belonged to him.
