Chapter 6 - The Last Lie of the Moretti Family

Pier fourteen was abandoned.

Victor insisted Grace remain in the vehicle.

She lasted forty seconds.

Then she followed Luca inside.

Daniel was found in an office.

Alive.

Locked inside but unharmed.

Grace embraced him.

“Edwin?” Luca asked.

“Gone.”

“Matteo?”

Daniel pointed upstairs.

They found Matteo sitting beside an old desk.

The elderly attorney was with him.

Matteo raised both hands.

“I’m done running.”

Luca stared at him.

“Then talk.”

And Matteo did.

Thirty years earlier, he had stolen money.

That part was true.

He had believed his older brother—Luca’s father—would destroy the businesses through reckless expansion.

Matteo secretly moved funds.

Daniel discovered it.

Isabella discovered it.

Then Edwin learned what was happening.

Edwin realized he could exploit the chaos.

He forged documents.

Moved far larger amounts.

And manipulated Isabella’s medication when she came too close.

Matteo learned afterward.

Instead of exposing Edwin, he covered everything up because doing otherwise would expose his own theft.

“My mother died because you were protecting your reputation.”

Matteo lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Luca wanted anger.

Instead he felt something colder.

Disappointment.

Matteo slid a folder across the desk.

“Everything Edwin has done for thirty years.”

“Why give it to me now?”

“Because he tried to kill me yesterday.”

Grace looked toward Daniel.

“And my father?”

“Edwin brought him here because he wanted Evelyn’s copies.”

Daniel shook his head.

“He still thinks there’s something missing.”

“There is,” Grace said.

Everyone turned.

She remembered her grandmother’s jewelry box.

The stolen photograph.

The sentence.

Some promises survive the people who made them.

Grace removed the silver key.

“There were two locks.”

Luca understood.

The hidden room had been the first.

The safe-deposit box had not required this key.

Meaning Evelyn had expected Grace to use it somewhere else.

Titan had found the first keyhole.

Maybe the dog could find the second.

---

They returned to the estate near dawn.

Titan immediately approached Grace.

She showed him the key.

“This is ridiculous,” Victor said.

Titan sniffed it.

Then walked away.

Grace followed.

Across the courtyard.

Through the mansion.

Upstairs.

Into Isabella’s old bedroom.

The room had remained largely untouched.

Titan approached an antique wardrobe.

He scratched the floor.

Luca and Victor moved it.

Behind it was a small metal door.

Grace inserted the key.

It opened.

Inside was not money.

It was a reel of film.

Victor located equipment to play it.

Isabella appeared on the screen.

Young.

Beautiful.

Alive.

Luca sat completely still.

“If you are watching this,” she said, “then Evelyn kept her promise.”

Grace covered her mouth.

Isabella explained everything.

But the final revelation was not about Edwin.

It was about Luca.

His father had known Isabella was in danger.

He had planned to expose Edwin.

Before he could, he died in what everyone believed was an accident.

Edwin had engineered that too.

Luca’s entire childhood had been shaped by one man’s greed.

Then Isabella looked directly into the camera.

“Luca, if you survived all this, do not spend your life becoming harder than the people who hurt us.”

Luca’s eyes filled.

Grace quietly reached for his hand.

He let her.

“Build something better,” Isabella said. “That is how you defeat them.”

The film ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor’s radio activated.

“Sir.”

Luca answered.

“We found Edwin.”

“Where?”

A pause.

“Outside the estate.”

Luca frowned.

“What?”

“He came back voluntarily.”

They went downstairs.

Edwin stood at the gate.

No weapon.

No escape vehicle.

Nothing.

He looked exhausted.

Victor approached him.

Edwin raised his hands.

“It’s over.”

Luca stared at the man who had served his family for decades.

“Why come back?”

Edwin looked toward Grace.

“Because Evelyn beat me.”

Grace frowned.

“She’s been dead for five years.”

“Yes.”

Edwin smiled sadly.

“And she still beat me.”

Authorities took him away with copies of the evidence.

Matteo agreed to cooperate.

For the first time in decades, the Moretti family’s secrets began moving out of shadows and into courtrooms.

But later that night, Grace found Luca alone beside the fountain.

Titan lay between them.

“It’s over,” she said.

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

Grace waited.

Luca looked at her.

“Your contract ends Friday.”

She blinked.

“You’re firing me?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I’m asking whether you’re leaving.”

Grace smiled.

“Are you asking as my employer?”

Luca looked at her for a long moment.

“No.”

Grace’s smile disappeared.

Something far more dangerous than Titan had entered the courtyard.

Hope.

May you like

And neither of them knew what to do with it.
