Chapter 14 - Ruth’s Impossible Choice

The courtroom filled before four.
Ruth sat behind Rebecca.
Tomas sat beside Mercer.
Across the aisle were representatives from families harmed by Salvatore's organization.
Ruth looked at them.
They deserved truth too.
One woman held a photograph of her father.
Salvatore's men had beaten him years earlier over gambling debt.
Another man's business had been destroyed after refusing to cooperate with dock racketeers.
Their pain did not disappear because Salvatore was innocent of Miguel and Sophia's murders.
Ruth understood something important.
Justice could hold more than one truth.
Salvatore could be wrongly condemned for murder and rightly accountable for other crimes.
The hearing lasted three hours.
Tomas testified.
Powell testified remotely.
The ballistic examiner testified.
Mercer's team authenticated the audio from Caruso's confession.
The USB records matched banking documents seized from Caruso properties.
Voss's attorneys advised him to remain silent.
Caruso invoked his right against self-incrimination.
At 7:18 p.m., Rebecca finished.
The judge took a recess.
Execution: 4 hours, 42 minutes.
At 8:05, court resumed.
The judge spoke carefully.
“The evidence presented raises profound concerns regarding the integrity of the conviction.”
Ruth gripped Agnes's hand.
Then:
“However, this court lacks jurisdiction to vacate a state supreme court mandate at this stage.”
Ruth felt the room fall away.
Rebecca stood.
“Your Honor—”
“I am forwarding findings immediately.”
“But the execution—”
“Remains scheduled unless stayed by the governor or supreme court.”
Ruth stopped hearing.
Outside the courtroom, reporters shouted.
Rebecca was already calling the governor.
Mercer contacted federal prosecutors.
Agnes prayed.
Ruth stood perfectly still.
3 hours, 31 minutes.
Her phone rang.
Stateville.
Salvatore.
She answered.
“What happened?”
He already knew.
“Ruth.”
“They're still going forward.”
“I know.”
“How are you calm?”
“I'm not.”
She heard his breathing.
“I need you to do something.”
“What?”
“Come back.”
Ruth closed her eyes.
“I am still fighting.”
“Rebecca is fighting.”
“I should be there.”
“You should be here.”
“Why?”
“Because if I have three hours, I don't want to spend them talking to lawyers.”
Ruth's eyes filled.
Agnes watched her.
Ruth whispered, “I'll come.”
She arrived at 9:04.
Salvatore had been moved to a holding cell near the execution chamber.
The chapel visit had been approved.
Warden Doyle personally escorted him.
Ruth stood near the altar.
Salvatore entered wearing orange.
Chains at wrists and ankles.
Exactly as she had once imagined him.
Except now she knew the man inside them.
He stopped before Mary.
“I want to see the Blessed Mother.”
Doyle nodded.
Ten minutes.
It was the scene that had begun everything.
But now Ruth understood what his expression meant.
Salvatore was not expecting a miracle.
He was saying goodbye.
Ruth approached.
“I hate this.”
“I know.”
“I spent three years wanting you dead.”
“I know.”
“And now—”
She could not finish.
Salvatore looked at her gently.
“You don't owe me guilt.”
“I judged you.”
“You judged what you knew.”
“I wanted you to suffer.”
“So did I.”
“What?”
“For years.”
He looked at the candles.
“After my father died, I wanted everyone who hurt us to suffer.”
He smiled sadly.
“Look where that road ended.”
Ruth wiped her face.
“I don't forgive everything.”
“You shouldn't.”
“I don't even know if I forgive you.”
“You don't have to.”
She looked at him.
“But I don't hate you.”
Salvatore's eyes closed.
Those words affected him more than any declaration of innocence.
“Thank you.”
Doyle stepped closer.
“Time.”
Ruth turned.
“No.”
“I'm sorry.”
Salvatore nodded.
Before leaving, he looked at Mary.
Then at Ruth.
“Go to the lake.”
“Stop saying goodbye.”
“Ruth.”
“No.”
He smiled sadly.
“You are stubborn.”
“So I've been told.”
The officers led him away.
At 10:12, the governor announced he would not intervene while the supreme court considered the petition.
Ruth could not understand the sentence.
Would not intervene.
Considered.
Words.
All of it words while a clock moved.
11:00.
11:20.
11:35.
Rebecca called.
“No decision.”
11:42.
Ruth entered the witness room.
Salvatore had requested she be present.
A glass wall separated the witnesses from the chamber.
Ruth sat.
Agnes beside her.
Wade stood near the door.
11:51.
Salvatore entered.
He looked toward Ruth.
She pressed her hand against the glass.
He did the same.
11:56.
A telephone mounted on the wall remained silent.
11:58.
Warden Doyle read the order.
Ruth began praying.
Not for a miracle.
For courage.
11:59.
Salvatore looked toward her.
His lips moved.
Thank you.
The clock changed.
Midnight.
May you like
And then every light in the execution chamber went out.
