Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the Hospital Scheme

The fire destroyed half the Cross archive.

It did not destroy the truth.

Evelyn had photographed dozens of financial pages before she died.

Victoria still had records.

Caleb had recordings.

Samantha had copies.

Nora had testimony.

Hale had been arrested.

Pierce was detained before he could leave Cross Plaza.

For the first time, the walls around the scheme began closing.

Only Marcus Vale remained free.

And Vale had one advantage.

He knew Damian.

He knew where Damian would hurt.

The call came that evening.

Not to Damian.

To Mommy.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

Marcus Vale spoke.

“Anna Bennett.”

Her body stiffened.

Damian noticed immediately.

“Who is this?”

“You know.”

Damian reached for the phone.

Mommy stepped away.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing complicated.”

“Then tell me.”

“The original drive.”

“Federal investigators have copies.”

“Not that drive.”

Mommy frowned.

“There was only one.”

Vale laughed softly.

“No. Evelyn kept two.”

Mommy looked toward Damian.

He shook his head.

He knew nothing about it.

“What’s on the second?”

“Something that belongs to me.”

“Then I don’t have it.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

“You just don’t know it yet.”

Mommy’s stomach tightened.

Again.

Always the same pattern.

People believing Evelyn had hidden things with her.

“What do you want from Damian?”

“This isn’t about Damian.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Everything used to be about Damian.”

Vale’s voice changed.

“Then he began dismantling his father’s empire and pretending that made him clean.”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

Mommy said, “If you have something to say, say it.”

“Ask Victoria why she came back now.”

Mommy looked toward Victoria.

She was across the room.

“What does she have to do with Evelyn?”

“Everything.”

The call ended.

Mommy lowered the phone.

Damian asked, “What?”

She told them.

Victoria’s face changed at the mention of a second drive.

“You know something,” Damian said.

Victoria sat.

“Evelyn contacted me.”

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

Damian stared.

“You knew her?”

“No. Caleb gave her a secure address.”

“What did she send?”

“A message saying she had proof Vale and Pierce had been using my identity.”

“And?”

“She wanted me to return.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I was afraid it was a trap.”

Damian’s hurt returned.

Victoria continued.

“Then Evelyn died.”

Mommy asked, “Did she mention a second drive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“She never said.”

“What was on it?”

“Names of distribution buyers.”

Damian frowned.

“Buyers of what?”

“Stolen medication.”

“How high does it go?”

Victoria looked grim.

“High enough that Vale cannot afford for anyone to find it.”

Mommy stood.

“So he thinks Evelyn gave it to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she trusted you.”

Mommy laughed bitterly.

“I really wish she had trusted someone with fewer responsibilities.”

Damian almost smiled.

Then I entered the room holding my stuffed bunny.

“Mama?”

She turned.

“What, baby?”

“There’s something hard in Bunny.”

Every adult went still.

I held out the plush toy.

The same cream-colored bunny I had carried the day we met Damian.

Mommy frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“I dropped him.”

I shook the toy.

A faint clicking sound came from inside.

Mommy’s face drained.

“Where did you get that bunny?”

“You bought him.”

“When?”

“At the hospital.”

She froze.

I had forgotten.

So had she.

During Lily’s hospitalization, Mommy had brought me to the staff daycare for an hour.

Evelyn gave me the bunny.

She said it was leftover from a charity box.

Mommy took the toy gently.

Damian called investigators.

No one opened it until they arrived.

Inside a stitched inner pouch was a second flash drive.

Evelyn had hidden the most dangerous evidence in a child’s toy.

Not because she wanted to involve me.

Because no one searching an adult nurse’s belongings would suspect a stuffed rabbit given to her daughter.

The drive contained names.

Doctors.

Distributors.

Private clinics.

Warehouse owners.

Account numbers.

Shipping routes.

And one folder labeled:

VALE PERSONAL.

Inside were recorded conversations.

Marcus Vale arranging sales.

Marcus Vale paying Pierce.

Marcus Vale discussing Evelyn.

And one recording from three months earlier.

Vale speaking to another man.

“Shaw has to disappear.”

The other man answered:

“No.”

Mommy leaned toward the speaker.

Caleb.

Vale said, “You’re developing morals?”

Caleb answered:

“I’m developing self-preservation. Another suspicious death brings investigators.”

“She has records.”

“Then take the records.”

“And if she refuses?”

Silence.

Vale said:

“I’ll handle it.”

The audio ended.

It was enough.

Investigators issued additional warrants.

Vale became a fugitive.

His photograph appeared everywhere.

But he did not run far.

He stayed in the city.

Waiting.

Two days later, Damian received a photograph.

Lily’s school.

Taken that morning.

Damian’s face became stone.

A message followed.

YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME. LET’S SEE WHAT YOU’LL TRADE FOR WHAT MATTERS.

Mommy saw it.

“He’s threatening Lily.”

Damian was already calling the school.

Security confirmed Lily was safe.

She had not attended because the school remained closed to her during the investigation.

Vale did not know.

He was working from old information.

That was the first advantage they had.

Damian’s phone buzzed again.

MIDNIGHT. OLD NORTHSTAR DEPOT. COME ALONE. BRING BOTH DRIVES.

Mommy read it.

“No.”

“I know.”

“You’re not going alone.”

“I know.”

She blinked.

“You’re learning.”

“Painfully.”

Federal investigators organized the operation.

Damian would appear to comply.

No drives.

No weapons.

Tracking equipment.

Police positioned around the depot.

Mommy was supposed to remain home.

She did.

For almost twenty minutes.

Then Victoria walked into the room holding a second phone.

“Vale messaged me.”

Mommy stood.

“What?”

“He knows Damian isn’t alone.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

The message read:

TELL YOUR SON TO SEND THE POLICE HOME OR ANNA BENNETT’S SISTER DIES FIRST.

Mommy’s blood turned cold.

“Rachel.”

She called.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Damian called through the operation line.

“What happened?”

Mommy told him.

Silence.

Then:

“I’m sending people to Rachel.”

“Damian—”

“She’ll be okay.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“But we’ll make sure.”

Five minutes later, Rachel answered.

She had been asleep.

Safe.

Vale had bluffed again.

But why mention her?

How did he know?

Damian realized the answer.

“He still has access to someone inside our system.”

“Keene is in custody.”

“Then it isn’t Keene.”

“Who?”

Damian looked around the command post.

Federal agents.

Police.

Cross security.

Employees.

Someone was leaking information in real time.

Marco entered.

His face was pale.

“I know who.”

Damian turned.

Marco held out a phone.

On it was a message chain.

From a device registered to Mrs. Vega.

Lily’s beloved housekeeper.

The woman who had cared for her since infancy.

Mommy stared.

“No.”

Marco shook his head.

“It’s not her.”

“Then who?”

“Someone cloned her phone.”

Damian looked toward the communications map.

The cloned device was transmitting nearby.

Very nearby.

Inside the depot perimeter.

The traitor wasn’t at Damian’s house.

He was standing among the people supposedly helping capture Vale.

May you like

And before Damian could identify him, every light inside the Northstar depot went dark.
